Advice to Younger Self:
Relax...curve balls ahead... you'll fail your boards, end an engagement, not match into residency & eulogize your brother...but lasting friends will emerge, you'll get top surgical training & help run a global design firm.
Stay Optimistic & Be Thankful.

For the sage wisdom on Twitter, would love your advice - What would you do differently during your first year on faculty as a surgeon?

1/ Happy July 1st! I remember my intern year getting a lot of pages & struggling to work through them. Overtime, I saw the patterns & took notes... so I present to you: Common Intern Calls

Percent of Surgical Residents:
Meeting Burnout Criteria - 75%
Meeting Depression Criteria - 39%
Suicidal Ideation within last 2 weeks - 12%
Top Three Barriers Reported:
1. Inability to take time off
2. Denial of problem
3. Fear of stigma asking for help
Performative versus authentic allyship.
Signs you’re in the latter?
Taking risks,
being accountable and
sitting with your discomfort.

Three Take Home Messages:
1. Even the most thoughtful, well-meaning people are not immune from implicit bias
2. Understanding your own biases requires deliberate self-evaluation (many tools available)
3. Lack of diversity negates our ability to recruit excellence
Grateful for this opportunity! I came to CHOP years ago with little to my name and developed tangible skills and vision for measuring & improving healthcare delivery. Beyond thrilled to do what I can to help us all move our missions and work forward.
