I am really excited to be joining the MFA program at American University as a Visiting Writer for the upcoming academic year. I can't wait to work with the wonderful undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in the Creative Writing department.
Excited to see that my essay, Rules for writing an essay, is listed as a notable in Best American Essays 2022. Thanks to the wonderful people
@forge_litmag
for publishing it!
I'll bite: Teaching a course on speculative fiction. I already have the book list etc. but I'm curious what books/novellas you'd add? I am keeping the reading to 200 pages a week, so I went with mostly shorter books.
My first book, a collection of short stories, One Person Away From You, Moon city short fiction award winner is available
My mom called it one of her top five books of late fall 2021. Get it while it’s hot!
@NateB_Panic
Accurate. I just listened to a great podcast about this. In particular, the role that the child tax credit and ban on evictions played in decreasing poverty in America. It's dispiriting to see these policies disappear :/
My mid-life crisis collection of essays is now available for pre-order
@autofocuslit
, parenting, identity, divorce, travel, eating spouses! It’s all there. Thank you to
@wheaton3000
and
@wheatofthemomnt

New writing desk for our basement. Will I ever write at it? Probably not. Will I ever paint it a nice deep blue like I claim I will? Probably not. But hey! Desk
Really excited to see my essay, Time Passes, which appeared
@Post_Road
listed as a notable essay for 2022 in best American essays.
This piece appears in my upcoming collection, the body is a temporary gathering place, from

My hot take is that Threepenny Review has the best model for editorial. They are high-profile and respond very quickly. It should be industry norm as opposed to 10-12 month waits. Also, mags should post numbers on solicitation vs. slush. Save some dollars for people.
It’s here!!!
My editor
@autofocuslit
has an essay in his wonderful collection about a writer doing an unboxing video on Twitter. Thus, I hope he one day memorializes me.
I try not to complain here. But my God, the job world is not the friendliest to parents. My career has been challenging since the birth of my two children, largely because I have been involved in caring for and parenting my children, which is often deemed as antithetical to work.
Here's a sneak peak at the cover of
@andrewbertaina
's forthcoming story collection, One Person Away From You, forthcoming in June from
@MoonCityPress
as the winner of the 2020 Moon City Short Fiction Award. Design by Shen Chen Hsieh.
Goal is to build up my Tik-Tok following this year. I am going to start with my daily skin care routine and then slowly pivot to close readings of Joyce without anyone ever noticing.
My essay collection was a semi-finalist at Autumn House Press :).
Congrats to the winner, Emily Pifer and to
@wendywimmer
for her forthcoming book in fiction. I look forward to reading both!
Thrilled to get an acceptance from
@cimarronreview
, for an essay that meditates on uncertainty, which is included in my upcoming collection from
@autofocuslit
.
August is such a strange month, the changing of the light, and the sudden overwhelming feeling of things beginning and ending at the same time as they remain the same, a sort of perpetual renewal of that sameness.
I, a forty-three year -old man, just started to regularly use moisturizer on my face. When I told my twelve, she said, "You have to cleanse before you moisturize or it doesn't do anything at all!"
Please be with me in my ignornace There is so much left to learn about skin care
I was super excited when I found out I won the
@MoonCityPress
fiction award in January, and it’s almost surreal that I’ll have the final copy of my book in a week!!
Went to grab a drink with a friend and he didn’t even compliment my new wool sweater. Luckily I am wearing it for the next fifteen days, so he’ll have more chances
Quick note on a past post. I'm excited to be returning to American University next year to continue working with students in the creative writing program. I loved talking craft, stories, essays, and opportunities with students last year, and I'm excited to continue!
The 2022 winners list is up! ❤️🦜🍀 There were so many great stories this year! We loved reading each and every one. Thank you to

I am really excited to have been selected as the keynote speaker for an upcoming writing conference. A bit nervous about what to say but also really thrilled!
My wonderful uncle passed today. He had a good life, and I am happy to have had him as a part of my life. He was the lynch pin at having family parties at his house. He met my aunt, his wife of 50 plus years in the peace corps. He will be missed.
Had a great event
@kramerbooks
last night. Thanks to all who gave time and came out.
My collection has been out for two weeks, and it has been really amazing to feel so supported by friends, family, and the writing community. 🥹
Just passed a dude on the way to my kid’s basketball game saying, “she wrote only one novel, the god of small things, and then a bunch of essays.” It’s like AWP out here in real life!
I have a new story, the second coming, in the current edition of
@TheSchooner
! So thrilled to be included in this great magazine. Special thanks to
@indigojackal
for choosing this end of the world story.
Sent my full novella to exactly one person. She said it made her cry and restored her faith in humanity. Gonna never show it to anyone else and assume that would have been the public reception.
Lately, I've just been drafting really long stories. which is a good career move. First, they aren't even close to novel length, which everyone likes/wants. And they have the added benefit of being too long for most literary journals. So, just for fun, I guess :)
