“Don’t come back” is what my arresting officer said to me as I was pleading that I am a journalist, and for water to help with my eyes filled with pepper spray.
In my 25 years as a reporter I have NEVER heard police in America actually say “journalists will be arrested” during a protests. But that happened in

Proud to know my acquittal will set precedent for other unjust arrests during protests.
That was a huge motivation for me to continue this fight for nearly a year.
Prosecutors should always take seriously the significant harm a possible criminal conviction can have on a person's record.
That's true not only for

, but also for protesters.
I’m still facing charges after being pepper sprayed & arrested while reporting the

The Polk County Attoney’s Office is saying evidence in my case, such as body cam footage, is too expensive and burdensome to provide.

CNN producer Carolyn Sung was wrongfully arrested by Minnesota state troopers on Tuesday night. This letter from a group of media outlets describes how she was mistreated and held for more than two hours
My arrest was not recorded by the arresting officer via body cam, as required by city policy.
Another DMPD officer failed to activate his video during the arrest of freelance photojournalist Ted Nieters while reporting on protests. His case was dismissed.
After my acquittal, Polk County Attorney John Sarcone told media I was protestor. DMPD public information officer Paul Parizek told the public I did not identify myself as press, although video shows me covered in pepper spray pleading that I’m a journalist, & that I had a badge.
I really want to emphasize how overwhelmed with gratitude and support I am following yesterday’s arrest. The Des Moines community, fellow journalists, and my friends and family have showed me so much love, I really don’t have the words. Thank you everyone.
Powerful moment, those detained at Wayne State’s encampment walked out together as they held one another.
Protestors cheered, ran to greet them. There were tears of joy.
As I was transported to Iowa’s Polk County jail, my hands zip-tied behind my back and eyes burning with pepper spray, I thought about my mother’s experience being strip searched and thrown in an Israeli detention cell.

I’m told that Detroit’s rival gangs — 4s, 5s, 6s — have never come together like this, promoting peace after the killing of an 11yr old boy.

Palestine is not a distant place for me. It’s where my parents were born, where I spent every childhood summer, where my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins live.
It’s where I might have been born if there wasn’t a violent occupation of our home.

Breasia Terrell disappeared in Davenport three months ago today.
The 10-year-old girl is still missing.
“Don't give up hope on Bree just because days, weeks or months have gone by. There's always going to be hope that we will find her safely."
US media routinely ignores the fact that Palestinians have lived under a brutal occupation for over 70 years.
An occupation that has been described by numerous human rights organizations as apartheid.
That context is essential.
Journalists have a responsibility to report accurately. The latest Israel-Palestine news is yet another test of how U.S. media will report a historically under-covered issue that’s often slanted. Many outlets won’t hide the fact that they’re reporting one side. Consume wisely.

@DesMoinesBLM
organizer Matthew Bruce turned himself in at the Des Moines Police Department this morning, allegedly on criminal mischief charges. He’s asking for support to come to Polk County Jail at 10:30.
My three-month mark at the Detroit Free Press is next week. It’s been wild. I’m learning, catching up fast everyday. I’ve had both original and exclusive reporting and four center piece stories.
I don’t really gas myself up a lot but f*ck it. I’m so proud of myself.
Police just used a large amount tear gas, pepper spray and are continuing to send canisters into the crowd. My eyes and face are burning, one canister landed next to me. Unsure what instigated this response. I heard someone threw a water bottle at police but I can’t confirm

A judge ruled that the police bulletin Viet Tran allegedly disseminated to media is not intelligence data & dropped his felony leak charge.
Tran & his attorney argued throughout the case that the charge was an attempt to silent dissent:
2 mill ppl(half are children)trapped in Gaza, repeatedly bombed by Israel, cut off from food, water, electricity.
Entire families obliterated. Calls for genocide of Palestinians by Israeli officials.
2,329+ Palestinians killed.
The tragedy is unfathomable. Why dont ppl care?
After 2 people in mental crisis were shot & killed by police — 6 weeks & 1 mile apart from each other — a lot has been said about mental health & the decriminalization of mental illness.

But his life was cut short. His body was found set ablaze in a rural Iowa ditch.
