I’ve lived in the UK for almost 30 years, I pay my taxes here, I’ve been called for jury service and I’m still not allowed to vote in the general election. It drives me nuts! So please use your vote to get rid of the Tories on my behalf - 4 July
Happy birthday Alexander von Humboldt … visionary scientist & all too prescient when he warned more than 200 years ago about harmful human-induced climate change. Though clearly we didn’t listen.
Humboldt died on 6 May 1859. The most famous scientist of his age and the forgotten father of environmentalism. After two books, hundreds of talks and interviews, and now a documentary I feel like his publicity team.
Very proud of this new book, pub in spring 2019: a graphic novel on Humboldt’s 5–year exploration of South America – an intimate portrait of him illustrated by amazing Lillian Melcher & Humboldt’s own diary pages, sketches, drawings & engravings.
Happy birthday Mr Humboldt. 249th to be exact. Prescient, restless, curious and utterly fascinating. What a man - forgotten father of environmentalism, first to describe nature as web of life. It was an honour to write about you in “The Invention of Nature”
Happy birthday Mr Humboldt. Out there in your Kosmos. Hope you like all the attention you’re getting. Check out the news. You’re everywhere

This is so exciting. The German book cover of "Invention of Nature" is going to be a postal stamp in Germany to celebrate Humboldt's birthday. 80 cents. From 5 Sept.
Thank you
@IsabelBehncke
for the most magical Chile trip. Mountains, sailing, hot water springs, sea lions, dolphins, a condor, spectacular fjords, dancing under stars, delicious food, wonderful conversations, laughter & a lonely Humboldt penguin. I’m in love with Chile.
Best surprise ever ... when Sigourney Weaver comes to your talk. I mean ... Sigourney Weaver ... and she turns out to be super nice & smart. Thank you Mr Humboldt.
Happy birthday Caroline Michaelis-Böhmer-Schlegel-Schelling. Heart of the Young Romantics; translator of Shakespearebrilliant mind, fiercely independent & broke many conventions. And of course written out of history. She's at the heart of my book "Magnificent Rebels"
On my way to Jena for Anthropocene Conference, I’m passing through Weißenfels where poet Novalis lived. Brilliant mind who became the epitome of the young Romantic.
Happy birthday to Friedrich Schlegel. Hot–tempered irascible “Magnificent Rebel” – one of the great minds of Romanticism. Believed that men and women were as equal as ‘petals of a single flower’ (from LUCINDE, his erotic autographical novel).
Arrived home after 2 months away &
@peterfrankopan
new book had arrived. Never been more excited about a book. So important, so ambitious. Can’t think of a better historian to have written this.

of "Adventures": “The tale of adventure & discovery is well suited to the graphic format, and Wulf & Melcher do it proud. The informative, light-hearted text and inventive illustrations bring Humboldt’s rumbustious character to life"
And here is a photo (sorry light was terrible) of Humboldt‘s parrot Jacob who was a girl BTW and who could only say “more coffee, more sugar”. Which reminds me that Humboldt called coffee “concentrated sunshine”
@MfNBerlin
Soon ... soon ... soon. Well, not quite soon enough. My new 'baby' is ready to face the world. Here is the glorious US cover (based on the glorious UK cover). Out in the UK on 1 Sept & in the US on 13 Sept (and in Germany on 17 Oct).
Few books blew my mind like
@MerlinSheldrake
'Entangled Life". The research, passion, writing, insights ... Not sure if I've ever learned so much from ONE book. Here is to another scientist who celebrates imagination. Essential reading. Go and get swept up in a new world.
Hello Mr Alex von Humboldt. As always when in Berlin, I have to say hi. This week you’re on Number 7 on Spiegel Bestseller List for “Invention” & Number 17 for “Adventures”. Happy days! Thank you for being such an amazing protagonist in my books.
After a long delay and crossing the Atlantic three times, I have finally
@EleanorHarvey
’s magnificent Humboldt catalogue in my hands. Still devastated to miss the exhibition but this is as close as I can get.
Absolutely unique opportunity. Stabi in Berlin is showing Humboldt’s legendary South America diaries. Go. Admire. See. Go. Go. This weekend only. When I saw them first, it inspired me to write “Adventures of Alex von Humboldt”. Best 250th present! Go.
Filming a Humboldt documentary simultaneously in German & English is frying my brain ... but there are perks. Flying with helicopter over Quito and Pichincha - a volcano Humboldt climbed 3 times

E.O.Wilson defined “biophilia” as love for natural world and “‘the rich, natural pleasure that comes from being surrounded by living organisms.” Such an important concept.
I’m in lockdown in Germany. Really struggling with this new world. I’m a hugger & kisser. Can’t write or work. Building a veg garden instead. No shopping. So, found old rafters on neighbouring estate. Back breaking physical work

Belated Humboldt birthday present. Today TWO books I did arrived in my letterbox - German paperback of Invention of Nature and Humboldt’s Selected Writings for Everyman’s Library which I edited and introduced (the latter for all those who want to dig into Humboldt’s writings)

Today I was supposed to fly to Santa Fe for my fellowship
@sfiscience
... instead I’m struggling to adjust to this new world. But as of today, I’ll start my “remote” fellowship. Work on my book. These rock formations will still be there next year.
Happy Birthday to Friedrich Schiller - author of The Robbers, famous inhabitant of Jena and a man who needed a drawer full of rotten apples in his desk to write. And of course part of the colourful cast in “Magnificent Rebels”.
No way to capture the dimensions... otherworldly gorgeous New Mexico. Yes, I also worked all week in my office
@sfiscience
... thank you for the most amazing & productive time.
Hey Mr Humboldt, here is the Lichtenberg-Medal we were given last night by Academy of Sciences in Göttingen. And we’re still on Spiegel Bestseller List in Germany - this week Number 6 for “Invention” and Number 16 for “Adventures”. Not bad for your birthday year, huh?
August Wilhelm Schlegel died today in 1845. Brilliant linguist, husband of formidable Caroline Schlegel, translator of Shakespeare (with her) & first professor of Indology in Germany. He also said “Notes on a poem are like an anatomical lecture on a piece of roast beef”
One of those moments I could have not even dreamed up as an 18-year-old. Signed with Byron’s pen (!!!!!) my induction as a Fellow of Royal Society of Literature ... of course it’s the ornamented gold one. Oh, and yes, I’m one of those foreigners.

A 'small' pile of German review copies of 'The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt' has arrived at C.Bertelsmann office. We are getting ready. Official launch at Leipzig Bookfair next week.
It's Humboldt's 250th birthday week - and I managed to stay in Spiegel Bestseller List in Germany with both books. "Invention" on Nr.9 and "Adventures" on Nr.17. Happy birthday Mr. Humboldt - we did it. And thank you my fantastic readers! Off to Berlin tomorrow for celebrations.
€49-a-month public transport ticket covering regional rail, metro, trams and bus travel across Germany … why can’t we have that in UK? Rail travel soooo ridiculously expensive here.
“Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt” on beautiful stone at Botanical Garden Cartagena ... gold foil shining in the sun. Long long day ...
@lillian_melcher
9 May 1805 – Schiller’s death. Goethe was so devastated that he couldn’t attend funeral. 'I lose a friend and, with him, half of my own life'. Pages of Goethe’s diary after Schiller’s death are blank – the expression, he later said, of his ‘hollowed condition’
#MagnificentRebels
Wow. "Invention of Nature" still on Number 5 in Germany's bestseller list. And "Adventures" back on Number 15. Thank you. These past few years but especially weeks have been quite a ride.
Happy International Women’s Day … one of my favourite historical women is fiercely independently–minded Caroline Michaelis–Böhmer–Schlegel–Schelling. Widowed, pregnant after a one–night stand, imprisoned as revolutionary, soul of Jena Set, sharp literary critic.
Audiences in Latin America are my favourites … full house, passionate readers, book lovers (and buyers!!). Thank you
@hayfestival_esp
for inviting me back to Cartagena. And look at the beautiful set design.
He examined volcanoes to understand how the Earth was created: Humboldt. He spent the night in freezing temperatures in this hut in 1802. The next day he climbed Antisana.

This can’t be the country I’ve called home for past 23 years. It feels very symbolic to be crossing the Channel right now. On my to Germany to work on my new book that has nothing to do with the UK. What a sad sad sad day.
Thank you to overwhelming fab response to my announcement yesterday of forthcoming graphic novel on Humboldt. So exciting to get all your lovely comments. Thank you.
Very proud of this new book, pub in spring 2019: a graphic novel on Humboldt’s 5–year exploration of South America – an intimate portrait of him illustrated by amazing Lillian Melcher & Humboldt’s own diary pages, sketches, drawings & engravings.

, who will discuss the profound cultural+scientific significance of Humboldt's re-framing of nature as a living organism.
Press waiting for German President Steinmeier in Quito. Two speeches today about the importance & relevance of Humboldt today. Never would have thought to hear a statesman say that when I started “Invention of Nature”
Good bye glorious New Mexico. I’m utterly in love with you. Maybe I lived here in a previous life. I want to breath this landscape.And thank you
@sfiscience
for having me here. Stimulation for mind & soul. Can’t wait to come back next year.
Silver lining (only one) of COVID for me: not bought any vegetables for 4 weeks now. Feeding us from my first ever veg garden. My carbon footprint tumbled: no flights & car ... food miles: zero. However, far too much plastic packaging on online purchases.
Look at this amazing photo from yesterday’s climate strike in Hamburg. Almost wants me to move back to the city I grew up in. Same number of people as London but a much smaller city.

In past week I’ve heard German Federal President Steinmeier as well as Presidents of Colombia & Ecuador refer to Alexander von Humboldt. Now Angela Merkel reminded Munich Security Conference of Humboldt’s words “Everything is interrelated”. Don’t tell me he’s not relevant!!
