Chief of Staff for nation’s best gov
@JBPritzker
. Called a “discerning Philadelphia Ear” by
@nytimes
. Dubbed "comedy gold" by IL political blog commenter.
I’m going to say something that needs to be said. The epidemic of people, in public places like coffee shops and airplanes, taking a phone call on speaker or watching a video without headphones is out of control. We need to shame this behavior better.
My relatives 6 years ago: “How many branches of Government are there?”
My relatives today: “Things are looking good for a January Senate runoff for control of the Senate based on returns in DeKalb.”
That’s cool. She’s referring to my boss,
@GovPritzker
, with that sign - who’s Jewish and helped found the Illinois Holocaust Museum. Which, if she visited, would tell her this phrase adorned Nazi death camps.
🚨President Trump just claimed on Hannity that governors are asking for medical equipment (ie masks and ventilators) and other resources to fight the coronavirus that they don’t need.
“A lot of equipment is being asked for that I don’t think they will need,” Trump said.
Women do well in these formats because we have a lifetime of experience dealing with men who try to interrupt us in meetings. This is not a sarcastic tweet.

@SenSherrodBrown
is the guy who thanks the waiters at events & always made sure that political staff got a meal at fancy Party dinners.
@tedcruz
is the guy who doesn’t see the stenographer directly in front of Dan Sullivan bc everyone not a Senator is a “nobody.”
This is idiotic.
@SherrodBrown
is being a complete ass. He wears a mask to speak—when nobody is remotely near him—as an ostentatious sign of fake virtue.
@DanSullivan_AK
was over 50 feet away, presiding. Last I checked 50 feet is more than 6 feet.
Hi. Maybe - just maybe - abortion is a super potent political issue and Democrats should run on it everywhere as FEMALE CONSULTANTS HAVE BEEN TELLING THE MEN TO DO FOR AWHILE. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
This take - and others like it - is one of many reasons democracy is in such peril. The idea that Glenn Youngkin - 15-week abortion ban, teacher tip line, CRT hysteria pushing Youngkin - is somehow a “sane Republican” is ludicrous.
“Someone must test the proposition that there are still enough sane Republicans out there to create a path to the nomination for a candidate who offers himself as an alternative, rather than an amplification, of the worst aspects of Trumpism.”
As a transplant let me say-the brilliance of Chicago pizza is the SELECTION. Craving good deep dish? Best place in the world for it. Want tavern style? Awesome spot down the street. Need some fancy artisan pie? 100 options. NYC has one note pizza-Chicago pizza is a damn symphony.
Sorry. The SCOOP is that JB has a cousin once removed who has a business that JB opposes & has signed legislation to curtail & regulate? And this is evidence of what…his ability to fight for what is right against his very extended family’s self interest? Like..thanks for the PR?
SCOOP: IL Gov. JB Pritzker, a potential VP pick, has strongly criticized e-cigarettes in recent years. But his own cousin Nicholas Pritzker is the 2nd largest shareholder of e-cigarette company Juul, from which he and his family have made at least $1.8B.
Next Friday is the last day an IL Gov’s Office will occupy the 16th floor of the James R Thompson Center. In honor of that I will be using this thread to amplify the things we will miss on behalf of the generations of state employees who occupied these walls. First entry…this:
This is some absolute hot garbage coming from a media institution I usually respect. First and foremost - repeat after me, national media - it is not the Democrats’ responsibility to save the GOP from the extreme elements of their own Party that they have cultivated for years.
I usually leave this stuff alone & I am not going to dignify the insane column I just (mistakenly) read in a local opinion section with a retweet. But it’s been a long few months & I ain’t just going to let this one go:
This man teaches at George Washington University- a DC school that most definitely had current students and alums in the Capitol this week during the violent insurrection.
...The damage caused by the rioting was enormous, but it will pale in comparison to the damage from the new precedent of a “snap impeachment” for speech protected under the 1st Amendment. It would do to the Constitution what the rioters did to the Capitol: Leave it in tatters.
I’ve lived in places with better weather than Chicago - but no place that appreciates good weather better than Chicago. This is a city where you never have to ask if it’s okay to take class outside.
The vast majority of people don’t want to live this way. Democrats should not shut up about Republican gun policies and how they are literally killing people in the everyday places of life.
I am going to say this until I am blue in the face bc there are still some people in my own party who need to hear it - there is no more potent issue in America than abortion. None. It is the issue that cuts across partisan/gender/racial lines. It affects everyone.
It looks like Ohio Issue 1 is going to fail in Delaware Co. (northern Columbus burbs), which has voted Republican in every presidential race since 1916 and didn't even vote for Sherrod Brown in 2018.
That’s a wrap, Gov. Two plus years in the making and the
#DemConvention2024
was a raging success. Coming to work for you was the best decision I ever made - and it was a privilege to watch all of the Democratic world fall in love with Chicago this week just like I did.
I’ve worked for this guy going on 5 years now, Illinois. You will not find anyone kinder, harder working or more dedicated to doing what’s right for the state than
@JBPritzker
. Please give him your vote today - he’ll make you proud for another four years.
Me this morning: Ohio 12 is somewhere in Ohio.
Me tonight: We are waiting for the more college educated portions of Delaware county to come in to more accurately understand where things are at.
CNN’s
@jaketapper
to Jill Biden: “Your husband has been known to make the occasional gaffe…”
Biden: “You can’t even go there. After Donald Trump you cannot even say the word gaffe.”

It’s real. The memes made us all laugh. And if you aren’t grateful for humor in stressful times well then what’s the worth of life?
Cowardice is an unseemly trait in normal times. In times like these, you court the shame of your descendants.
Goodnight, thank you, this is all I’ll say on this matter, & if you are screaming incoherently at me in my mentions - it’s likely I muted you awhile ago.
For us in Illinois, that guiding principle was and is reducing loss of life due to Covid. As Governor Pritzker has said many times - you can’t have a livelihood without a life.
No, JB Pritzker doesn’t know what it is to be broke - but he does know what it is to be grief stricken over personal loss. He knows what it is to spend your whole life wishing a lost loved one back, to battle the overwhelming nature of grief. He knows THAT misery intimately.
You wrote a column ranking
@realDonaldTrump
“nicknames” for his enemies which included “Dicky Durbin” and “Pocahontas” - and on that last one you said: “Offensive? Absolutely. Hard to forget? Also yes.” So what is this you are saying now?
For the love of all that is holy it would be great if pundits and political writers could understand that there is a difference between random things Democrats respond to on twitter and the messaging focus of our campaigns.
Warren was a tenured law professor at Harvard & Kamala Harris led a groundbreaking study on the impacts of human trafficking in CA while AG. I like Mayor Pete a lot but, my dudes, you should all have caught on that in 2019 we are going to call this shit every. single. time.
Ok I went down a dark hole to figure out how Illinois ended up on this map and long story short a bull shark made it into Lake Michigan in 1955 and bit a boy. There have though been ZERO shark attacks since
@GovPritzker
was elected.
My father, the lawyer, is also an amateur woodworker and during the worst of the pandemic he made me this beautiful jewelry box. It landed in Chicago this weekend and I will cherish it forever. (Just want
@Nick_Offerman
to be proud of my Dad.)
14/Anyway, dudes need to take note of what happened last week. We ladies - we've had it with the old stupid ways. If you think you should talk about women's clothing...just...DON'T. It makes you look small, stupid & sexist and frankly, no one has time for that anymore.
It’s not politics you’re asking Dems to put aside. It’s your attack on basic human rights. A lot of people whose rights are under attack work at the DNC. So I don’t blame them for saying we’re not interested in playing softball while you defend ripping kids from their parents.
But here’s what you don’t get to do - write some dangerously stupid crap that is getting dunked on all over the Intertubes & instead of being brave enough to just admit you were wrong - try to diminish & disparage a genuinely good man to distract from your own moral ineptitude.
The choice was more deaths or less deaths. That is not, in any way, to diminish the extraordinary & diverse ways people have suffered terribly over the last 5 months. But in any terrible crisis you must - YOU MUST - hone in on one thing that is going to guide you.
As the Governor said today, this virus humbles you. What you know this week might not be what you know next week. The ground you stand on always feels shaky. But you have to choose your ground. We chose Doctors and science. Other people chose...other things.

@GovPritzker
was at the grand opening of innovation center
@mHUBChicago
's West Loop location today. He does a lot of ribbon cuttings. But I think this is the first one that involved a plasma torch.

A quick story. In 2016, after Trump had won & so many of us were trying to figure out what to do about it all, my sister
@Missy4PA
called me to say she wanted to get more involved in politics.
Every death - every single one - has been one too many. Death rates are not some game, some statistic to tally up to see who won. There is no “winning.” Everyone gone is a parent, a child, a friend, a loved one.
That piece of paper has stayed on his desk ever since. I know he looks at it every day. I know I think about it every day. That information, just like almost everything we know about Covid-19, was imperfect. But it did accurately represent the consequences of inaction.
I don’t think it’s sexist to write about how a presidential candidate treats their staff. I’m sorry but I don’t. And I absolutely think it’s relevant. It’s been a problem on Capitol Hill for years and ignoring it has led to serious issues for the young people who take these jobs.
This is a bullshit, arrogant, completely wrong take that is pretty insulting to the vast majority of people who work on Capitol Hill (or any legislature). And not an awesome way to start out with people you need to spend the next few years working with.
Every Governor had access to data like what we saw very early on in this crisis. Some - Democrat & Republican - chose to act. Some didn’t. I’m not here to crow over one choice or another. But don’t pretend it wasn’t a choice.
My boss, myself & our staff spent the better part of 4 months in 2020 trying to get masks, ventilators & basic supplies & finally resorted to secretly flying them in from China so the feds wouldn’t steal them so excuse me when I say she can go all the way to hell with this.
This is a door with no handle. Not sure where it goes. Not sure what’s behind it. I assume that it’s the JRTC’s Room of Requirement and it opens when Illinois most needs it.
It was a comparison of modeled deaths in Chicago if mitigation efforts were taken versus if no mitigation efforts were taken.The 2nd number was 6 times higher than the 1st. The Governor & I stared at that piece of paper for a long time.Soon after,JB issued the stay at home order.
One of the things the Governor & I share is that we both lost parents at a young age. You look at death differently your whole life. I can’t see a story about a person dying without thinking intimately about what their family is going through.I relive the shock of my Mom’s death.
Hi. A reminder. Illinois IS actually also in the Midwest. In the last 6 months we:
✅ passed a $15 minimum wage
✅ legalized recreational cannabis
✅ put a fair tax on the ballot
✅ signed the most progressive reproductive rights act in nation
✅ actually did infrastructure week
During the worst of Covid my team went about 15 weeks straight without a day off. No one hit anyone. Actually at our daily 7pm meeting during that time we went around the room to offer something positive. So…you know…spare me.
"This place is a pressure cooker," Speaker Johnson said about members being in session for 10 weeks straight.
No moment captured the roiling tensions more than minutes before when Rep. Burchett confronted McCarthy: "you're so pathetic." What we witnessed:
In NYC, I've had lunch at tables of 10 at which I realize I'm arguably the least smart person there. That never occurred in Chicago. You have to work your butt off in NYC because everybody there is very sharp, very ambitious. 2/
Remember when you met with my boss while running for Mayor and told him someone had hacked your Twitter account & posted all the more conservative tweets? I was there so I do. Just funny to see the hacker back at it. Might want to consider 2 factor authentication!
Illinois has highest state & local taxes in nation. Determined to stay
#1
, state increased taxes over $1 bil. in a record $53 bil budget, 32% higher than when Pritzker took office. Big winners-teacher unions & migrants. Legislature then awarded themselves a raise. MADNESS!
