I teach English and write about movies (Cinema Scope, FFC, etc) and disability. Reviews editor,

'Retired Cpl. Christine Gauthier, who has been trying to get a wheelchair ramp installed at her home for 5 years, testified on Thurs. that a caseworker told her they could give her assisted dying, even offering to supply the MAID equipment for her'
Despite the love for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” not nominating America Ferrera for a
#GoldenGlobe
for her performance as Gloria seems to fundamentally miss a big point of the film. More snubs from today's nominations announcement here:
Can’t help but feel like the first KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON teaser where Ernest is reading the children’s book and asking “Can YOU spot the wolves in this picture?” is a Scorsese literacy test that many people cannot pass
Perry claimed in his memoir that he used to beat up Trudeau in elementary school so “I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play” has a sinister ring to it
Matthew Perry’s passing is shocking and saddening. I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them. Thanks for all the laughs, Matthew. You were loved – and you will be missed.
I don’t think it’s helpful to suggest that any disability you encounter is obviously a manifestation of long covid and by extension that both disability and long covid are deserved punishments for something
One of the funniest and most insightful clips in American political history — perfect distillation of how people get into and stay in politics to serve anyone but their constituents
Why is everyone involved in the making of this movie, including its director, talking about it like it’s something you should begrudgingly drag yourself to see?
TENET’s rising reputation is not surprising. What surprises is that nobody tells you how much of the movie is about yachts: boarding a yacht; diving off a yacht; seeing yourself dive off a yacht while you board it; sweeping on a yacht; casting your binoculars on a yacht
I would argue that spending years of your life making a movie as mid as MAESTRO is less impressive than giving an actually good performance in an actually good biopic
My mom got covid at the hospital following open heart surgery, on a floor in a monthlong outbreak, and they simply discharged her rather than deal with it. She quickly got worse at home and had to go back to the ICU within a week to have fluid drained from her lungs
Promoting the safety of people at higher risk from COVID in essential healthcare settings is not only desirable. It is required if institutions truly support equitable, accessible care that promotes health.
I SAW THE TV GLOW is probably the first movie to capture the millennial experience of finding a special subcommunity of weirdos on a forum and then learning one of them disappeared or died when you check in on them several years later
POOR THINGS* is like if Barbie digested a stomach full of microplastics and shit out a masterpiece of WTF
*Haven't seen, just practicing festival hype voice
ETERNALS looking as radical and inventive as promised: You will believe that good-looking people can stand a few feet apart in natural light in the forest and on a beach
KILLERS OF THR FLOWER MOON reminds me most of THE AGE OF INNOCENCE and THE IRISHMAN: People smiling and greeting you and offering you drinks and then going into a different room to tastefully order your shunning and/or your death.
So many ways to make the case for why Covid is still a significant public health threat with inequitable distribution and instead people are doing this
I find it funny seeing infectious diseases doctors recommending dropping mask requirements for nurses to media as a way of relieving their burnout. Other more traditional ways of reducing burnout for nurses include: paid sick leave, wage increases, more resources
Whatever your thoughts on masks and mitigations elsewhere, it should be common sense that masks in hospitals are a low-stakes way of reducing the risk that vulnerable people who survive whatever brought them there have their life threatened by a hospital-acquired infection
Feeling very privileged that I get to announce I’m starting a full-time position in the Department of English at Humber College in January. See you in Zoom school!
@corinaknoll
This is a very old, conventional story you’re telling, which disabled and chronically ill people will instantly recognize, and it has real world ramifications for a lot of vulnerable people. Your glib framing sucks. Please think about what you’re doing.
Any actually notable names besides Amy Pascal, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Jennifer Jason Leigh here? Who alphabetizes a list with this many signatories by first name?
More than 450 Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals have signed an open letter denouncing Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” Oscar speech.
Do people who think the Uber/service dog issue is strictly about non-unionized labour and exploitative rideshare companies in the gig economy have any idea what flying with a wheelchair is like?
For my birthday I’d just ask that you not ask a disabled person if they’ve heard of metal straws, only $15 in a three pack on Amazon. It’s a low bar — please do your best to clear it.
I don’t expect doctors to be progressives but I do expect reporters to be able to recognize when they’re being spun by a political/economic argument dressed up as medical advice
Batman Returns hard to turn away from whenever it’s on tv. You simply don’t see someone else’s nose blood dribbling down a villain’s face as he holds half-eaten fish guts anymore.
Haven’t seen BABYLON but Damien Chazelle goes to jail for inspiring dozens of “This movie is exactly as zany as doing cocaine” takes from sober critics
Why do people doubt that Obama has read those books/seen those movies/made those lists? To me they feel very consistent with an obscenely wealthy liberal with a JD, prematurely retired in his 50s, making a second life as a Netflix development guy
In personal news, it’s the six year anniversary of me getting struck, flattened, and compressed into the street by a car; still do not recommend this experience and still feel very grateful to be alive!
First encountered this author when they wrote a bad piece on The Wailing which argued that making the malevolent spirit a reminder of colonial occupation was xenophobic so I don’t think it takes much for them to feel betrayed
99.5% of the population isn’t covid cautious at the moment so you could always just continue living your life in good company without fixating on the other 0.5% if you like
Update on my TIFF news to say I’ve since been accredited. Thanks for all the kind notes and gentle pressure, which I’m sure made a difference. I do wish crossing a threshold of online complaint wasn’t a prerequisite for writers coming from smaller outlets.
Sure, there are fewer and fewer places to read good, sustained film writing that expands your thinking and reference points, but there are hundreds of places to read casually dashed off, brain-melting comments about the Oscars, free of charge
Celebrity disability stories usually don’t do shit for me thanks to the terrible way they are framed but Selma Blair cutting through that to talk about flare ups and “fatigued joy” feels like an actually new, kind of incredible thing
I will be honest about the fact that I don’t have the bandwidth to read decades of medical research— nor do I have the expertise to judge the merit of studies. I genuinely would appreciate a real expert going head to head with RFK bc it would be clarifying.
An MCU fan responding to a clip of their named heroes saving unnamed and presumably historical Indigenous children on a beach, saying the quiet part loud about the Eternals bringing “sprawling civilization” to people with “no hope”
The Coen brothers should never have introduced Fargo as a 'true story'. Childish, meaningless pranksterism encourages more childish, meaningless pranksterism and now we have four Fargo TV seasons that repeat the same lie, misleading people for no reason.
Having rewatched TFA and TLJ, feel sad for Oscar Isaac, who started out playing Poe as a generous, loving person who sees the best in every man he meets and wants to have sex with him, and who ends up asking a woman in a helmet “Would you like to have a kiss like old times?”
Will not be watching The Suicide Squad, a film where it seems likely someone will say “You’ve GOTTA be fucking kidding me” or “Holy fuck bananas.” We must take a stand, however small.
