So in the week following the final, Spain’s football president is resigning and Nike is finally offering goalie shirts.
We could have saved a lot of time if we had just listened to women on both these issues when they were first raised. What a wild idea.
Remember when they tried to make Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi the crowd anthem a couple of years back at ABs games and it didn’t catch… reckon that was mainly cause of the demographic of the crowd.
Ruby just had to say the words last night to get the crowd in full voice.
Remember when all we heard in 2017 was concerns about Jacinda Ardern’s inexperience?
And how this time we had a candidate with virtually no political experience but who wasn’t ridden on this point and is now struggling in his first assignment due to it?
Sexism is so wild.
It’s no secret that in the past I’ve worked for Kiri Allan.
She held high standards for herself and her mahi. She expected the same from those around her.
I can’t say I saw any examples of the accusations currently being thrown around.
Hello, my weight is a risk according to England Rugby criteria and I’m only an inch off my height also being a concern.
But wait! I’m a cis woman so none of this matters. This is cooked. Assess all or your prejudice is showing.
I know of at least one of your “professional” Black Ferns who will be back to work this week.
So just keep that in mind aye. On top of the world but still a long way to go.
The First Home Grant was part of how I put my deposit down for my home 10 years ago.
Now, it might be going.
Good thing landlords got those tax cuts though aye?
This govt is a joke.
World Rugby Women and Girls coaching framework is the most steaming pile of misogynistic bullshit I have encountered in quite some time.
Remove immediately and replace with the fundamental understanding that training for women and girls in the sport is to navigate this shit!
I, too, have been tipsy in Wellington’s hospitality establishments.
I, too, have accidentally left somewhere without paying and had to go back.
Have none of you?
One of the things that pisses me off, aside from like ALL OF IT, is that when folk say “our kids” when protesting drag queens.
They are not your kids. They are the children of folk that want to participate. So jog on.
I mean, it feels weird to have to say this but given current events I would like it on the record that I am not stoked that Nazis are walking around and some people are chanting “two-sides!” in response.
There isn’t a debate when it comes to Nazis. There is only fuck off.
No one is making you attend a storytime. Just like no one is making you attend church.
We all get to choose where we and our families spend our time.
Pick what suits you, leave the hate out of it.
You know what, trans folk have never made me feel weird about my gender. They have always taken me as I am and so it’s been pretty easy to do the same.
I’ve only been told I’m doing womanhood wrong by cis folk.
We are all more than dress codes and our reproductive abilities.
Feel for England, I really do but the thing I need you to understand is for a long time we have known our national team is good. We have recited the stats. But we have never SEEN how good and more importantly, we have never FELT how good.
Cats out of the bag now, game changed.
Any time I see footage of the British royals in the stands at the Rugby World Cup, I’m just reminded that they didn’t travel to support their England team in their Football World Cup final.
Interesting to see the narrative around women’s sport attendance quickly shift from “No one cares” to “It’s just cause tickets are so cheap.”
People who don’t want to see you win will always be shifting the goalposts of what they deem a success.
As a pākehā, something I’ve noticed with my pākehā mates who have spent time overseas in the last decade is how they are out of step with how things have moved here when they come home.
Basic stuff like mispronunciation eg. Tow-po for Taupō but also some statements that…
Anyone else feeling for the Williams sisters this award season? They just out here trying to tell their inspirational story and getting pulled into a bunch of noise they never asked for.
Right, just to make sure I’m following along.
We let the transphobic woman in because we don’t want to curtail free speech but people are encouraged to exercise their own and counter it.
They do, more effectively than folk anticipate and then they are told, not like that.
For those that reckon Kiri Allan should have “stayed in her lane” re: schedule comments, I would like to remind you that she played rugby for years.
She’s a part of the community and so of course it’s relevant to her interests. People contain multitudes, wild I know.
Can someone explain to me why the test that tells you about your egg situation is $80-$100 whereas the test that tells you about your sperm situation is free.
Cause that feels like some patriarchal bullshit.
The the Black Ferns are each getting $25,000. Turns out you can find money for women’s rugby - WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT!?
Now let’s find another $150,000 and pay the original Black Ferns back the money they invested in our 1991 World Cup appearance.
I clocked that transphobia in the coalition agreement and wrote to my local MP/Minister of Sport and Recreation, Chris Bishop. No reply yet.
Meanwhile, I’ve written another column about how women in sport have a lot of issues with fairness, none of which involve trans folk.
Do you ever think that folks might think things are more divisive now than ever because more historically underrepresented groups now get occasionally heard?
The idea that there was any point in the past in which everyone got a long is such bullshit.
"But National won't support it passed the first reading, so it's nothing to worry about."
Oh but National is happy for racist rhetoric to be stirred up to confirm their position in power. So weird but I actually do think that is something to worry deeply about.
Fun fact for you, after the last Olympic Games, participation in women’s rugby in NZ grew by 40% between 2016-2019.
Anticipating these performances will have inspired the next wave of talent to give us a go!
… for some people at least, the conversation has moved on from.
I say this cause that’s what it felt like watching Moana interview Luxon.
Like we were talking to where the conversation was at 10+ years ago. Pākehā we not go backwards please?
English Rugby’s trans athlete policy is trash.
And I’m so deeply disappointed in the cis women, who know exactly what it’s like to be sidelined in our sport, thinking that this is any type of win.
Rugby that is safe for trans players is safe for everyone.
I convinced my boyfriend to have a photo shoot to welcome the arrival of our spice rack. The photos came out better than I thought.... what do you do during weekends off?
Forgot the fiction of men in dresses threatening women’s sport, it’s reality of these men in suits that have already proven to be the biggest danger to our participation and success.
If you’re ever wondering just how racist New Zealand is, take a look at my replies from the last 24 hours.
Haven’t had this busy a block day in a while.
Little sister in the crowd, holding a “Māori land, Māori rights” sign looking up at Parliament says, “I can see him. He’s right up the top, there in the window. Surely he can see this.”
Holds her sign higher, determined.
No words are better than her own to express the force that Georgina Beyers was.
I will never forget her staring down hatred on the steps of Parliament during the protests of our Civil Unions bill.
Love to all who loved her. It is a very sad day.
Brought back to our hotel post game, no dinner for our team.
We have been given breakfast, lunch and now are expected to pay out of pocket for dinner despite not being on a flight until 7am tomorrow morning.
Day in the life women’s rugby player. Unacceptable.
This is a fucking terrible idea.
There is already debate over whether we should even use KiwiSaver for first homes. But at least that’s an asset, that helps your future.
For a rental bond?? This will absolutely make people financially worse off.
I’m a lesbian that’s cheered for Paul Gallen while he played for the Blues.
Never again.
You can’t say it’s 2022 and then ignore the fact that in the year 2022, people are okay disrespecting the rainbow community.
I respect the lifestyle choices of my religious teammates…
My only non-expletive filled take on selection choices by one of our national teams is, representing New Zealand isn’t just about playing a sport. It’s also about upholding values.
Only the best of us should get that honour.
When I bought my house 6 years ago, I didn’t pay a huge amount. Since then the market as you know has gone up.
So I could have leveraged and bought another house but why? Then I’m part of the problem. Feel very successful to be an owner occupier, don’t need more than that.
You know how you have all been loving me having yarn with the old girls? I pitched a series to do that. To tell a brief history of our women’s game here in NZ to a few different places and they all passed.
Maybe it’s time to drag out that document again.
Aside from like, the homophobia dog whistle of “sex ed should be only taught at home” it also assumes an expertise that parents just might not have.
My mum has always been very chill about me being a lesbian but she’s straight. So doesn’t have knowledge to pass on.
If you have ever watched:
- Mrs Doubtfire
- The Topp Twins
- White Chicks
- The Nutty Professor II
- Mrs Brown’s Boys
- Any of those Tyler Perry Madea movies
You’ve already watched the drag you’re so seemingly stress about.
I don’t really understand how people are surprised at Luxon sucking. He has this whole time.
He can only learn three lines of responses and then just flails about if he is pushed outside of that list.
Tosses a different word salad daily.
Should a vacancy open up on the Hurricanes board, may I suggest looking for a representative from the women’s rugby community to help inform the franchises set up of the women’s side?
Bit nervous when
@NZMorningReport
asked me to speak about the potential ban of trans women from our game, as a cis woman athlete I can only speak to my experience.
Main thing I wanted to get across, rugby is a game for all. So if you want to run it straight at me, lesssssgo!
Let the record show that Sarah Hunter just called out to me across the crowded room, in front of a bunch of folk who had no idea who I was.
I have never been cooler than I was in that moment.
My work dad
@SpeakerTrevor
is resigning! End of an era.
I know a lot of people have a lot of reckons about him but Trevor has been a huge support to me, both in mahi with the opportunities he’s provided me and personally - he’s attended more of my rugby games than any other…
Not me back in the day, working in an MPs office, asking myself before doing anything “what would this look like as a headline” when I was literally a junior staffer.
You reckon it might be time the Prime Minister learnt to employ similar checks before acting.
A reminder that my partner and I are built different but play in the same team with and against other people who are also built differently than us.
Biggest impact of these different sizes? Increase in people’s body positivity cause we learn every type is useful!
Watching last night’s football game and seeing yet another massive crowd for football got me thinking… how does the attendance at this World Cup compare to the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2011.
The results may surprise you but perhaps they no longer should.
So our World Cup is delayed by one year. A lot of challenges that present but also a window of time to build this audience right.
Let’s stop sitting on our hands and start getting hype for the women’s game!
A special good evening to my wee mate on
@TVNZ
news who when interviewed about a cricketer said “He’s pretty good but not as good as Sophie Devine.”
You are my hero.
