Introducing SWYM 🏊🏽♀️
Swim With Your Meaning is a new global initiative founded by
@alicedearingx
.
Through swimming programmes, workshops and experiences our aim is to encourage everyone, from wherever they are to discover what swimming can mean for them.
So excited to officially announce that I have been selected as a
@teamgb
athlete for the Tokyo 2020 games. I have qualified in the marathon swimming race (10KM, open water).
My selection makes me the first black woman to represent GB in a swimming event at the Olympic Games.
Bit of video game trivia lived out today. The marathon race course in Odaiba Bay is a location in one of my favourite video games, Persona 5.
Swimming past Rainbow Bridge geeking out 🤪
‘My son will be mixed race. I want him to be judged on his achievements not his skin colour.’

Just got home and finally having a few moments to process the last 48 hours as it has been a whirlwind of craziness.
Went out to Portugal with hopes and daydreams of qualifying for the Olympics and to have it become a reality is still hitting home.
I usually keep these emotions to myself with swimming. But I’ve never been more motivated to see things through than I am now.
I’ve been overlooked and underestimated at many points in my career & I’m through with trying to prove these people wrong. This is for me & only me.
My achievement is the result of 16 years of work and the support from countless people around me.
I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity and throughly look forward to representing GB at the highest level of my sport.
LET’S GOOOOOO SIS 🔥🔥🔥
(Pic from 2008)
When I watched swimming on TV as a child I always liked the swimmers who waved when walking out/when their name was read out.
I’ve tried to make it a habit to be one of those swimmers.☺️😂
#MISM2021
Swimming has been a huge part of my life and has moulded me to the person I am today. I really couldn’t imagine my life without it... The serenity it brings it’s something I cherish.

@Swim_England
What is more exciting to you, I genuinely want to know.
Seeing FNC / G2 come out on top and take back the title, continuing to dominate EU
OR
see a new team take the title after MAD, like RGE / MSF / VIT?
So excited to announce that I am a
@Nike
athlete. 💥
Working with the world leading brand in sport to further promote inclusion and showcase how sport can positively impact lives.
Just do it 💫
The village is so cool. Just walked past some women from team Kenya who were singing, chanting, clapping and dancing as they walked down the street
Good vibes ❤️

. Thank you to all who supported me and made it possible 💜
Been a year since I first publicly expressed my feelings & experiences as a black international swimmer. It was the most terrifying thing: finally speaking out but I am grateful everyday that I did.
Thanks to everyone & every news outlet which has helped tell my story thus far.
Written by me; this is the first time I have publicly discussed being a black swimmer in the UK.
Starting to bring more attention to this as I want to help more POC to learn to swim or get into competitive swimming.
This took a lot of courage to finally discuss. Hope you enjoy

I love using Twitter but the noise is ruining it for me.
I’ve put in too much hard work over 1.5 decades to have it undermined by speculation & rumours. Being in the right mind frame for training is key and I’m not having anything which I can control affect that.
Shout out to the coaches who have encouraged me and believed in me more than I believed in myself at times. Have to add
@Swim_technique
to the list too. Thank you all 💖
Alice Dearing is a 23 year old British marathon swimmer who became world junior champion in 2016. She is currently swimming and studying at Loughborough University with the goal of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics games in 2021; if she does so...

Very excited to be given the opportunity interview and delve into the issues which black & Asian people face when getting in the water.
The documentary begins showing today on

Swimming is a life skill. Millions of people are being let down on potentially learning. Whilst pubs and shops can open pools which can keep people 2m apart can’t?
#openourpools
. People need to learn to swim
Crazily common for elite sportswomen to get non athletic men try to say they’ll “beat them” at their sport.
Nice to see the evidence disproving these claims making itself known 😂
I’m TIRED of people looking down on social media as if it doesn’t and can’t create a positive change in people’s lives... look at this. Took them 2 days to sort out a career enhancing setup after the original video went viral and rightfully so.
Go get it 👏🏽👏🏽
So so proud to be included on a list with women of this level and power.
Like seriously to be mentioned in the same article as these women???? WHAT 😭😭😭
Ok that was 🤩 gg!
Listening to comms with the boys was a dream, been so many years.
Masterclass by the guys. This is our year!!
And a big thanks to
@YamatoMebdi
for the drafts
Swim coaches: please, please attend this if you can. With the majority of coaches being people who will never have a period it is so important that education is available to make coaches and athletes (especially teenagers!) comfortable on this topic!

Will be interesting to see how the swimming season plays out in terms of speed/times. Already quick times posted at
#ISL
despite some swimmers taking months out of the water due to lockdowns.
Could it spell a change for the way coaches and swimmers view the swimming season?👀
Actually love that my nerd side is welcomed with such open arms😂
This has to be the most niche tweet for my account as the majority of people follow me for swimming stuff but I’m here like “nahhhh have some video games too b x” 😂
AND IM NOT STOPPING THERE
Bit of video game trivia lived out today. The marathon race course in Odaiba Bay is a location in one of my favourite video games, Persona 5.

Very proud and honoured to receive this ❤️
The work of
@BlackSwimAssoc
is so important and loving that we are getting opportunities to shout about it.
Big love to
@SkySportsNews
for the support 🥰❤️
You know that phone call you put off doing for MONTHS and it ends up taking 52 seconds and you’re sat wondering why you hate talking on the phone when its actually all okay??
Just had one of those 😭
In 2020 I helped cofound
@BlackSwimAssoc
& in 2021 I became the first black woman to swim for TeamGB at an Olympic Games.
We have to keep encouraging everyone to learn to swim. It’s a basic life skill which all should have access to 💙
Sport England statistics show 95% of Black British adults don’t swim & 80% of Black British children don’t swim.
What are your experiences of swimming? Can you swim? If so, where & how did you learn? If not, why not? Were there any barriers?
Was an honour to meet at Number 10 yesterday for
#WorldDrowningPreventionDay
@BlackSwimAssoc
has worked so hard since its founding in 2020 to make water safety accessible for all and be the bridge for Black and Asian communities and the aquatic sector.
Excited for the future!💙
Really cool opportunity to race in the Commonwealth games pool for 2022.
Will be great to see this facility inspire and home the next generation of swimmers from Sandwell & Birmingham ❤️ my home ground ❤️
Also… I now hold the 50m record for the pool 😏
Two big events in 2019 for me today:
1. Landed in Japan for the world championships holding camp
2. Received my results from

grating me a 2:1 in Politics with a minor in English

I am ALWAYS scared / nervous when doing an interview with leading news outlets. I never know what the reaction to my words/thoughts/experiences will be. And right before they go out I question if I’ve done the right thing by voicing them.
A few words from myself included about why
@serenawilliams
is so important to black sportswomen. Powerful on and off the court, thank you ✨
Also thank you to
@BritishVogue
for asking me about this. Getting to recall that story took me back ✨
Loved writing this! Thank you for the opportunity,
@theipaper
. Really hope that people will realise that swimming is for them & swimming 25m is achievable! ✨🥰

was incredible. I hope it helps people realise swimming – from learning to swim 25 metres to elite level – can be done regardless of race or background'

Thank you for the messages of support.
My career has had many highs and lows thus far & I hope there are people who will look at me and realise that they are not confined to certain a way of life because of their race, background, ethnicity, etc.
Find your passion & own it ✨

Earlier this week I got a call from my sister-in-law. low key panicked me as we never call without warning.
When I picked it up my niece was on the phone. She said:
“Aunty Alice, guess who is person of the week this week!”
I was like:“is it you?!”
She goes: “No it was you!”😭
Amazing to be in the
@Telegraph
@WomensSport
top 50 sportswomen of the year!! Thank you to
@fi_tomas_
for covering my story and helping me get my message out there 🌟
There’s still time to vote in the
@thetimes
Sportswoman of the year awards.
I’ve been shortlisted for the Changemaker award off the back of being the first black woman to swim for TeamGB at the Olympics & helping co-found the
