I frequently get asked why I don’t do 1-on-0 dribbling activities, including two ball dribbling, as well as why I don’t teach specific dribble moves such as cross-jabs, dribble counters etc. The reason is due to the fact that none of these practice activities align with...

🏀 3v2. Used the same advantage start 1v1 and added extra loads. 🗣Emphasis on making connections within the split, kick, extra.
🏀 1v1 Adv - Pass & Cut
▪️Used a popular 1v1 advantage start (behind back), but started the action with the pass.
▪️Players had to 'connect' before cueing the pass and cut. Cut takes place either side of the defender.

☑️ Offense has small adv. Emphasis on using the hip turn in a recovery situation, attempting to complete a 'long' or 'short cut-off.'
☑️ Started 1v1 & loaded-up. PoE = defender reading recovery def’s position. Do I need to stay or help?
For those that liked the 1v1 Cat & Mouse, here is how you can use the same start for 2v2. An analogy I like for younger players is “keep the runway clear for take-off.” Driver is the ✈️. 💡sparked after talking with

🏀 This example provides affordances for players to finish off cuts and pass & catch on the run. It naturally promotes deceptive behaviors
💡3-on-2 Bursts

Tag is one of the best ways to improve dribbling, warm-up and start practice on a fun note. This is obstacle team tag, ⏰ stops when last player gets tagged. Great for beginners and pros, and everyone in-between. Read on for more from today’s camp with Joliet Academy in Chicago…
🏀 2v1 “Chaos” Start
2️⃣ Form two side from imperfect spacing as soon as ball is driven on WS. Players must connect instantly.

One of the most important concepts we emphasise is to NOT run the play!
Set plays are merely opportunities to disorganise the defense. If the defense is already in a state of disorganisation, then players should act on the relevant affordance(s) to convert the advantage.

The Mikan Drill is a classic basketball drill which has been used for decades. But how effective is the Mikan in its purest form? Here is an example of how by very simply adding a low level guide, it randomises and improves a traditional drill.

Taking inspiration for new loads from watching our Mini Basket group. This is the “Around the Arc” game (defender can’t go inside the arc until offense goes in). Watching one of our kids use a retreat dribble as opposed to just the stop start.

🐅 “Jungle Shooting”
👉Two or three balls, 2v2, 3v2, 4v3 all work for this. Offense can only shoot threes, but can pass or drive.

Player-led workout. When players understand the importance of variability in their work-outs, they’re onto a good thing! Alternative to blocked spot shooting.
👉With beginners AND pros I refrain from static handling or two-ball dribbling in favour of using SSG's which are more representative of the game.
💡Play inside a small area (🏐boxes). The def gets a point each time they steal or deflect the ball. Change roles after a minute.
➡️ The notion of fundamentals are something adhered to by many coaches who talk about players requiring fundamentals before they get the chance to play games or perform more “advanced skills”. Fundamentals are often coupled with explicit instruction. Why is this a problem?
🏀 Dribble Traffic Races
😃 Fun energizer to start practice
1️⃣ point for 1st to score. Players must get out and back in for a rim finish using two dribbles, avoiding the traffic!
👣Constraints naturally lead to players pushing ball out and gaining distance with their dribbles.
I use dynamic starts frequently to check if skills are being retained. A lot of the time we see an over-reliance on static starts where the offense gets to start in a perfect location. This is a "wheel start" which can be used for just about anything.

🛡️1-on-1+1 Shield Tag
👉Shield has to find a way to protect the handler from defense. Anything is allowed!
💡Later constrained the🛡️to protect without their hands, but loved seeing how much the girls got into it. With the right SSG's, they can embrace making contact in a fun way.
🏀2-on-2 vs Blitz
💡Handler can early/ late reject or make pocket pass to roller
🛡Defense must blitz
▪️Must be an in-rhythm pass to get the point. Same rules as the 2-on-1 shared earlier this week

🏀”Burst Close-Outs”
💡 Players stay for 40 seconds. Defensive players work in shifts to give multiple reads on the close-out.
🏃 Sprint to space immediately for the next rep, always a new location.
🧠 Must have a play present mentality, play through the mistakes!
🏀1-on-1+1
💡Screener’s def must aggressive show. A deflection, forcing an out of rhythm pass or recovery = 2pts
▪️Passer must send in-rhythm pass (on the “roller’s runway”) to get the point
⚔️ Handler weapons such as dribble over or pull-back can break 3-in-a-rows
🐭 Cat and mouse 1-on-1
👉Defense work on being deceptive and navigating picks/ screens without being screened
💡Great way to create affordances for younger players that will be similar to what they will encounter in pick and roll scenarios when they are older.
💡 Around the Arc 1-on-1
👉 Defense is either side of 3PT line. Offense can drive at anytime as they go around the arc, live once they enter 3PT
🏀 Extra point if they trick the D to go early OR if the D touches them while going around. Let’s explore the affordances within this…

🏀1v1 "Hips Game"

I love
@mackaymjMichael
's "clean or dirty" cueing for DHOs & Gets. If a defender attempts to blow-up or 'knife' the hand-off, it is NOT safe to pass. This is when the pivot can be used as a potential solution.
🏀 Post Finishes with Guided Defense

👉 Had 50 players and two baskets. Games like this are perfect for sessions with high numbers, keeping everyone active while having fun
💡 Great example of an alternative to cone drills
💡Fun warm-up game I have previously shared, now with the offensive player dribbling a basketball
👉Great to observe what solutions appear. Playing with less time encourages certain behaviours such as push out dribbles and offense finding ways to create space
👉1-on-1 Line Knockout
💡Offense can only move using the lines, defense is completely free. Def gets a point each time they knock the ball or if the off enters the lava (off a line).
🏀Sit back and watch the various solutions emerge. Great alternative to static & cone dribbling.
🏀 3v3 w/ Reversal
▪️Start with reversal. If coach puts a hand up on the catch, defence must hi-5 and offense tries to turn the small adv. into a big adv.
▪️No hi-5 = just play! We were encouraging the 'connection' & blast cut from the double gap, but other actions also emerged.
🇸🇪Last day of camp with
@DrillosDrills
working on a bunch of new tag & knock-out ideas.
🛡“Shield chase” Chaser has to knock-out the escaper’s ball but cannot steal the shielder’s ball.
💡Shield has to keep their partner alive as long as possible. Constrain the space played in.
😀 Thread on the importance of FUN and how this is misconstrued, particularly in the youth sectors of big pro clubs in Europe. This creates a perpetuating cycle which other youth coaches then emulate, damaging the experience players have of our sport.
💡”Shrink the Space” 3-on-3. During the game, the playing space available for the players is constantly changing. 👉 This shapes the various triggers and offensive/ defensive solutions that can be used.
⏰ Play with an 8 second clock to increase difficulty for offense.
💊Thread: re-thinking traditional "basketball vitamins"
👉This is the closest we would get to vitamins. Instead of 1-on-0, using scripted defense. The cut-off cues a protection plan, which must be different every time. Nash, Barkley, Bounce Out or Back-Pivot.
💡Rep without rep
🧵This is a thread on how I apply differential learning (DL) to shooting. I believe the benefits of non-linear pedagogy are particularly evident with shooting. This season I’ve never done form shooting or given any explicit instruction to “correct technique” as my players shoot.
💡Ghost screens are an effective dynamic start for developing close-out reads, while adding context to the close-out. This serves as an added bonus as players can learn a multi-players coverage solution at the same time as developing their close-out decisions.
▫️A dynamic start I have been using recently for 2v1 and 2v2 post pen reaction. Coach 'connects' with a player to determine the driver.
▫️Post (player furthest away at time of connection) has to 'find the window.'
▫️Defenders must then be quick communicating their match-ups.
🔊 Visualization Warm-Up
🗣 Connecting & Talking Task is a necessity to avoid a breakdown.
🎡 Use a wheel start. Any player takes the initiative to start with the ball.

🐎 Off to the Races. Instant reaction, all players winning the first 3 steps & full speed sprint
🔎 Seek the Sideline UNLESS you can get behind the last def
🔌 Be your own outlet until kick ahead pass or stopped
Using a ball on hip adv start, two nice reads here using a “Rondo Fake”. NBA breakdown footage in this clip was what we played at the beginning of the station to give context. Players could score using any move, but got bonus points for using the Rondo Fake (1/2)...
This is a🧵on how ecological dynamics forms the framework of our player development at College Prep. This begins with the shared understanding amongst our staff that the goal is to design activities that allow our players to self-organise and co-adapt to changing constraints.
Passing Fundamentals vs Functional Solutions
I believe that entire generations of players have been stifled from expressing their creativity due to fundamental, reductionist coaching practices.

💡Coaches - what other loads & constraints would you add?
Journaling post-practice, improving the ability to interpret technical diagrams. Next level is myself as the coach describing the play with our terminology, players drawing the frame, and then doing it immediately 5-on-5. Quick de-brief and do-over or next sequence!
💡Gate tag is a simple but effective warm-up. It is fun and easily loadable, e.g simply add a 🏀. Watch the slow-mo version of
@JacobMnsson2
at the end and see how this is more representative of the movement solutions used in basketball vs traditional warm-ups & “agility ladders”
💡Obstacle Tag
✅ Fun, encourages connections, prepares players for the movements they will actually use
▪️Easily loadable. Constrain space, ways to dribble, number of taggers etc. Fun load at end was only tag a player without ball (escapers can pass & connect w/ each other).
Manipulating constraints to provide opportunities for offense to punish the switch. One defender on each team effectively designated as the turtle, must play D with hands behind back. Offense can attack turtle through triggers. Next level is adding more deception to boomerangs.
🔨 First time working on the Gortat Screen to punish the deep drop. The bonus with teaching players coverage solutions is that not only do they learn HOW to play, but technical skills can be developed at the same time in context with the game…

Part 2 cont... we like the posters to be as concise as possible with minimal text and more visuals. Some of the guys asked for more so we put essentially the whole offense on one page (paired with video). Avoided giving traditional PDF/ diagram playbooks completely this year.
A 1-on-0 finish vs a finish performed in a real game are two contrasting tasks, as the information in both environments is completely different. I prefer to design activities such as this two ball 2-on-4, which is more representative of what a player encounters in a real game.

➕What makes this a good SSG? High time-on-task, offense must immediately transition to defense, variability from defense arriving from diff locations
Small changes in shooting can lead to big results:
📍Shooter always in a new location
📐Passing angle always changes (lateral or behind shooter is critical). Most passes do not come from under basket.
🙆♂️ Contest in diff places, from varied angles.
⏰ Bursts. Time on task.

Watch these skilful behaviours emerge within this 2-on-2. Constraints = must play in-between the elbow lines & inside the paint, starting with a PNR. This is what I mean by having functional solutions. Impossible to replicate this in a decomposed drill such as 2-on-0.
This is an example of what we do in an individual workout. Repetition without repetition, every shot is different. If I had an assistant coach, I would play defense the whole time.
👉Pass keep-away
🏀Extremely simple SSG that can be played in many different formats from 2-on-2 to 5-on-5. Smaller space = harder for O
💡Here after every pass, O had to touch the bleachers before re-entering. Created a +1 for D, which afforded some trapping situations as shown
