In what can only be described as a miracle, Anurag Maloo, 34, was found barely alive deep in a crevasse after disappearing 3 days earlier. A rescue team descended into the crevasse and found him. He's in Kathmandu in critical condition.

Checked with my local sources for first winter K2 summit- no news. They are probably busy. 😊 I don’t expect an update until they summit around 13:00 local time. Weather remains perfect. Unbelievable.
Winter K2: I confirmed directly with Mingma G that he summited Winter K2 and used supplemental oxygen. So proud and happy for him. Well done by all 10. Another 30+ at BC waiting for weather windows to acclimatize/summit.

In the shadow of the historic achievement on K2, the mountains have taken one of it’s own. Tragically Sergi Mingote has died. Details unclear but while descending from C1 to BC he suddenly collapsed. Aid was given, but he didn't recover.
Upfront, there is no 100% confirmed news about: John Snorri, Ali Sadpara, and Juan Pablo (JP) Mohr Prieto. JP was climbing without supplemental oxygen. Here's what I know.

.I struggle to find the balance to applaud those who summitted, morn those who died, just be outright mad that climbing Everest is even at this point along with how Nepal can continue to do nothing
Sajid Ali Sadpara is back in Base Camp. He is one strong individual. A helicopter did a cursory search but didn't get very high and found no trace of the climbers.
I'm very excited to announce my return in October 2018 to Nepal for another climb. With a matching grant we will be raising money for the Cure Alzheimer's Fund. Click for details!

It's always tough to characterize an Everest season, so let's wait to let everything settle before posting my season summary. But one thing is clear, 2023 is the deadliest season ever, and some routine mountaineering practices are broken.

The K2 season is showing the same crowds and inexperience problems we saw across the 8000ers and Everest that resulted in 21 deaths this past spring. I dig into this scary K2 scenario.

Excellent weather across the Karakorum allowed for summits and progress including Nims who got his 7th 8000er in 4 months and a Messner achieving a new route!!
Ed Viesturs’ partial comments on records, “I truly believe that Reinhold Messner was the first person to climb all 14 8000ers and should still be recognized as having done so. Climbing mountains is a personal journey, and should not be about being on a list or setting records”
The death toll climbed to 10, perhaps 11, for the spring 2023 season, with multiple climbers missing. Wednesday, May 24th, may be the last summit day this season.
