It is so annoying seeing a paper similar to your research in a journal when that journal rejected your paper saying this is not in our scope.
Institute name pushes a lot, a fact no one can deny.

Interacting with class 12 students from non-bio background, I realized that many are interested and speak on AI/ML, robotics, electromagnetism, but hardly anyone could define electron proton atom current or similar basic topic.
Flood of information but drought of knowledge.
Scientists: I don't want my child to do PhD
Academicians: I don't want my child to do PhD
Medicos: I don't want my child to do MBBS
Why these feelings growing stronger day-by-day ?? Why are all so frustrated?? Or is it only on Twitter??
For last few days, every UG Biotech student I am talking to is worried about publication during UG program. All said that someone told them having publications will be good.🙄
The "publish or perish" model has finally destroyed the essence of learning.

A small tip for candidates going to defend their PhD:
No one else knows the thing you are going to present better than you do. Be confident. You have spent a lot of time and brain on a topic, and you are the best person at that moment who knows about it.

Few things to remember in research:
1. Patience is the key. Never loose that.
2. A good mental health will lead to strong science and concept. Never loose your peace unnecessarily for science.
3. Learn to work as a team. Research is never done in isolation.
PhD tip:
When you plan to pursue your PhD, look for a mentor and lab that:
1. Can help you learn relevant skills 2. Keep your motivation ON
3. Help you achieve your goal
4. Inculcate team spirit
5. Nurture the capacity of independent yet collaborative thinking.
Scientists, if you can't motivate (you are the best person who knows you the best) do not hire an intern. They can be severely demotivated for science by watching you. And that's extremely bad for a candidate at that age. You are finally damaging the science.
👨🔬Tested milk adultrants in sample from local dairy and the packaged milk. Both contained great amount of urea and formalin.
Urea has been a milk adultrant for long, but why is formalin added to the milk?? 🤔😳
The unnecessary excitement of writing "paper" in UG students (even in 2nd year) is killing the habit of thorough reading. There is a generalized notion among them that writing a paper is very easy. And I have seen in addition to absence of thorough reading, they are not being....
Exactly 10 years ago on this date, I stepped into academics as an ad-hoc Lecturer at a central institution. Served there for 2 years, resigned and joined as a full-time PhD Scholar in the same department. Completed PhD in 2020 and joined academics on regular position. A decade.
Received complimentary copy of my 1st book.
Parents can go to any extent for their children. My father sold his books to arrange for the admission fee for my . I received my book today. It's International Men's Day today. Two reasons to remember him.🙏

India won't become a science superpower by just spending "money". There are lot of other points.
1. Train your students and mentee well. For that you need to be well trained. Just finishing syllabus is ridiculous approach to show.
2. A science culture need to be cultivated...
This one chart shows how India can become a science powerhouse
As the world’s largest election kicks off this week, India has an opportunity to reimagine science funding
Sorry to say this, but people in science suffer from hierarchy in mind. A scientist from a "good" institution normally happily accepts to deliver a talk in another "good" institution, but normally not in "not so good" in their mind. This will keep widening the science gap.
What a happy moment !!
One of my B. Tech students (from my last affiliation) called and informed that today he got selected for M. Tech at IIT Delhi.
Teaching is highly satisfactory with these achievements of the students.
Some good news to share.
In this lockdown time:
1) Sent two revision papers that got published.
2) Submitted 4 manuscripts (3 papers, 1 chapter)
3) My first complete book is published (link below)
Really worried 😟
Talking to a class 12th comp student. He was continuously talking about Blockchain technology and said if someone doesn't know blockchain currently he/she is not doing anything.
Me: What is a semiconductor?
He: Mute
Me: What is lattice structure?
He: Mute
They: Is there any scope in Biotechnology??
Me: Absolutely, in fact we have the most. We have light microscope, fluorescence microscope, phase contrast microscope, confocal microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electronic microscope, cryo electron microscope.
Research Scholars, please try to be human with the interns if you have been given the responsibility to train them. Back-biting and showing cold behavior will never make you a good human, even if you are a good scientist.
PIs, interns are also your responsibility.
I am amazed that no one from state or private universities were selected. Didn't they apply?? Or if applied, what were the criteria for selection? Don't they deserve an opportunity to speak on such platform?
There is a lot of "academic biasness" in India, for sure.
Ph.D. Scholars, your work is, and will always be, YOUR WORK. Your supervisor/mentor will only show you the path, but IT'S YOU who have to walk upon that and figure out "how to walk". Your "way of walking" will take you places and will be visible to others.
Submitted the manuscript in September last year in a reputed journal. No response till date even after sending email. This is utter disgusting. Journals, STOP THIS HABIT. Don't sleep over manuscripts, take pillow instead.
Try to become a good human first, even if you are a mediocre scientist.
You may be remembered for your credentials by people in your field, but you will be remembered as a human for your behavior.

Amidst many tweets since yesterday abt people doing PhD in their 40s and 50s, my only question to Indian academia:
How many of you are willing to take these middle-aged PhDs to various post-docs and later into academics (when there is age-limit at most places)?
@VoicesofIndAcad
Everyone wants to study in a government institution (for lesser fee and seemingly better education), then want to work for a private firm, and then abuse the government institution (teachers are lazy, are afraid to be competitive, not good money in govt sector bla bla bla).
How can someone ask the conference organizer (a faculty member of the host institute) to bring idly and order McPuff ? You are not in a restaurant or a banquet hall. We are not waiters at a restaurant.

The APC amount in Nature recently talked about is higher than the annual salary of assistant professors in many institutions in India. It's not at all open access, it's accessibility issue.
The new strain of SARS CoV 2 is the hot talk. Mutation is just a way of it's survival. It will do everything to prevent the vaccine effect.

I was extremely disappointed yesterday when a UG candidate applying to PG course was not able to describe what bacterium is?? She was applying for MSc Microbiology.

I recalled the conversation few days back.
My son's school ensured that all parents and students witness the landing together through online meeting platform. My son is in Nursery, yet all the kids of his batch were so excited. They sang National Anthem at the end.

Discussing all about the APC of fancy journals won't help Indian academicians in anyway. It's high time we should seriously think of improving the Indian journals. The APC in one such journal can bring a lot good to our science.
@VoicesofIndAcad
There has been a protest demanding increasing the research fellowship. I have been told by a few people what contributions do PhD candidates have that they ask for a hike? The other side of the coin, however, is that what motivation does the system provides for the bright...(1)
Universities need UGC recognition, but when it comes to faculty salary, most of them don't follow the UGC payscale. They just mention that salary won't be a constraint for deserving candidates.
They need "recognition" for admissions, but don't care about their teachers.
Our latest publication.
In this short technical report, we collated various mucosal (intranasal and oral) vaccine candidates under investigation for COVID-19. One section also discuss microneedle based vaccine delivery strategy.
You might have seen the movie "A beautiful mind" about Nobel Laureate mathematician Prof. John Nash.
But how many of you know about Dr. Vashishtha Narayan Singh, India's very own "beautiful mind"?? His story 👇

There is a big difference between literacy and education. If your training and qualifications are making you arrogant, you seriously need to rethink about them. In that case, you are only literate, not educated.

Now the sole motive is to crack the exam, no zeal to get the basics right. 2nd year student preparing for GATE using test series, when this is the time to go through the text books to build the basics. Extremely sad. The Indian Examination System !!
Twitter gave some really good friends who I can contact without hesitation. And the help I get from them is often beyond words. The best part, I have never met any of them except

. Just wanted to thank all 🙏🏼🙂
Today I received my 1st independent invitation to contribute a paper for a journal. I think I stepped one level up. All thanks to my PhD supervisor who made me capable of this. 🙏
We often talk about how badly certain students write e-mail. Ok, they might not have learnt that art or not taught so. But what about faculty members and scientists not replying to emails??
In my experience, most people I have sent an email to didn't reply?
@VoicesofIndAcad
My lab (B. Tech students) presented a small part of an ongoing work at International Conference on Structural Biology and Drug Discovery at Gautam Buddha University.
This was their first experience of participating in a scientific event. Happy to see them happy and learning.
If a housewife is not feeling well, she is still expected to do all household works. It is not a sign of courage, rather it is disgusting to expect her to do even in that condition. Other members of house should, especially males, must help and ask her to take rest.
The most precious thing someone can give you is his/her time. Respect if someone is doing that. Don't take that for granted thinking that he/she is always free and so ready to give time.
Because of ease of accessing information and various gadgets, they are shifting away from fundamental knowledge. Few organizations are pushing "coding" in students as something extremely necessary for survival. Am afraid they may become a robot.
For Indian researchers:
We very often, almost daily, see various post-doctorate positions posted by faculty members abroad. But very very rarely we see such advertisement by an Indian faculty. Why is that so??
How many of you witnessed this??
Kind request:
PLEASE do not glamorize transition to industry from academia. Both the things are equally important. It's just what's you interest, what's the opportunity, and what's the need.
Teachers are non-renewable. You won't get good teachers for your children.
In a biology spotting exam, a 🐄 was placed.
*B. Sc student: A cow

A: I am thirsty.
B: Have some water
Liver Dude: No RCT and strong evidence that water kills the thirst. It's an ancient pseudoscientific practice. Modern evidence says that water can be replaced with fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, and a lot of other commercial drinks.
A PhD candidate carries not only the experience gathered by him/her, but also that gathered by his/her mentor. So mentors should ensure the PhD candidates get best training experience gained by them.
@VoicesofIndAcad
Can't recall where did I come through this, but I think it's very apt:
"Suppose someone wakes you up at midnight and asks you to explain your research. If you can seamlessly explain at that point, you have done your PhD."
