the thing with Meatbun’s writing is that she doesn’t leave her characters’ motivations up to interpretation. she will explain them thoroughly, and Shi Mei is no different. there’s nothing particularly complicated about the justifications he made to commit the atrocities he did.

his cause is noble, his backstory is pretty fucked up, but at the end of the day, the means he went about liberating his own people resulted in the suffering and deaths of other innocent people. he is a hypocrite and undermines his own cause from pretty much from the get go.

making Shi Mei the protagonist would literally not make his motivations any clearer. and the people who don’t like him (including myself) are not lacking in any understanding of what his character is supposed to represent in the text.
