Moving away from home is a hardship, no matter how much people might try to romanticize the idea. You miss being with your parents as they age, you’re no longer by the side of your siblings trials and triumphs, you’re separated from your original community and friends.

Tomorrow night is the 21st night and it’s the only odd night to fall on the night of Jummah this Ramadan. May Allah grant us all tawfiq to complete the last ten nights with strength. May He accept our worship, bring us close to Him, grant us forgiveness, and beautify our decree.

It is a genuine jihad of the nafs to try your best in only see the good in others. To pardon the slips of their tongues, the harshness in their manners, the looks on their faces. You’ve got to believe in the good of other Muslims, even when they struggle to make it manifest.

I personally think one of the most impactful things our generation can do when it comes to Qur’anic and Islamic studies is to ensure that young girls, particularly those in their preteens and teens, are given access to high quality education and teachers. Teachers who truly care.

A small piece of advice, as you go through Ramadan, and you gain insight about goals you’d like to reach, behaviours you’d like to change, situations you no longer want to be a part of, how you want to show up - just briefly jot them down and put it in your phone notes.

Sometimes the Qur’an feels heavy and hard when it’s purifying something dark that resides in your heart. Sometimes the Qur’an feels bright and expansive when it’s increasing something pure that resides in your heart. Don’t question the feeling, continue your engagement with it.

There’s a Somali proverb that loosely translates to: “If the people came together they could mend even a crack in the sky.” There’s a beauty, optimism and sense of collective love that runs through the Somali people, as clear and joyous as the blue sky for whoever cares to look.

The Qur’an truly does leave its mark on people. We strive to have “a character like the Qur’an”, but it really is something to see hints of that in people, in varying shades and to different degrees. May Allah shape our character through the Qur’an and make us of its people.

Let there be no such thing as “what if” after you’ve made a decision that you sought guidance and counsel about. It has always been true that whoever sincerely placed their affair in trust with Allāh, that what ever took place afterwards was always the best outcome to happen.

Whatever insight come to mind that is important, keep it and don’t forget. Take a look at your notes across the year, remind yourself to keep putting in the effort to do what you were inspired to do during this month. Let your striving in Ramadan continue outside of Ramadan.

Make a promise to yourself, and then keep that promise. That’s how you learn to believe in yourself - that it is possible for you, so long as Allāh grants you the tawfeeq. The first person who has to believe your word means something is you.

Success is deeply personal. Own the promises that you’ve made to your Lord and to yourself. Don’t make your success rest in the Hands of anyone except Allah. Take your hopes and make them into sincere quests of seeking from the never ending bounty of your Lord.

I always respond to the question, “what do you want to do with your life?” with “I want to help good people do good things.” But if I’m really honest with myself, what I truly feel like I’m meant for, what my response should be is, “I want to help people change the world.”

Let a set of values and principles rooted in faith be the reason why you do everything that you do. Don’t let it be trends. Don’t let it be people pleasing. Don’t let it be for the sake of status. Don’t let it be for this world. Let what you do be for Allah’s sake alone.

Everyone needs things that anchor them, to keep them away from drifting too far from the good version of them. And of the greatest things you can make an anchor of well-being for your soul is the Qur’an. Develop a relationship with the book of Allāh based on a genuine love of it.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve become less emotionally expressive, but in many ways I feel completely emotionally and intellectually renewed. Calmer. A lot more controlled and intentional in what I say and don’t, less prone to swings in emotion. Just steadier and clearer.

I suppose I earnestly believe in the chance for positive transformation and new beginnings just because I’ve been witness to so many times where Allāh has taken what I believed to be almost nothing and made it into something fundamentally life changing.
