If ABA stats counted in pro hoops records, Dr. J sits at 8th on the all time scoring list with just over 30k points! But, since they don’t, he’s 75th on the all time list and his 12k points in the ABA aren’t recognized. 🤨 It’s time to include ABA stats! ❤️🤍💙

On this Date in 1976, the ABA had its final game. The New York Nets beat the Denver Nuggets 112-106 to win the 9th and last ABA championship. The game was played at Nassau Coliseum in NY and the Nets came back from being down 22 points to capture the title.

Darnell Hillman played with the ABA Pacers for six years, winning two championships in Indy. Known as Dr. Dunk, Hillman won the ‘77 NBA Dunk Contest. He is one of the all-time great track+ field high jumpers in college. Hillman lives in Indy and is an iconic ABA ambassador.

Not a single one of Dan Issel’s ABA points, rebounds or assists are in the NBA record books. That ain’t right! If they were, he’d be 14th, instead of 168th, on the all time scoring list and his ring with the Colonels would be celebrated more! ABA stats should be recognized!

On this day 47 years ago, the NBA and ABA “merged,” as the NBA expanded to include the New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs. It represented the end of the ABA, a League that existed for only nine years. But its legacy lives on still today. ❤️🤍💙

Stan Love played 4 years of pro hoops for teams including the Baltimore Bullets and Lakers of the NBA and Baltimore Claws and Spurs of the ABA. He had averages of 7 PPG and 4 rebounds per game for his career. Stan is the father of Kevin Love and brother of Beach Boy, Mike Love.

Sad news from the ABA fraternity today - Cincy Powell passed away at the age of 80. Born as Cincinnatus in Louisiana in 1942, Cincy played eight seasons in the ABA with four teams. He was inducted into the Univ of Portland Hall of Fame and was the first cousin of Colin Powell.

It’s a time to celebrate the late Mel Daniels. He would have been 79 this week. Mel was the ultimate teammate - a gentle giant and a protector. Mel’s loyalty and passion led to Dropping Dimes, an effort that created $25M in recognition payments to former ABA players in ‘22.

Ron Boone played 8 seasons in the ABA, with the Chaps, Stars and Spirits. He was a 4x All Star and member of the ‘71 champs. He averaged 17 PPG and 4 RPG for his career. An Iron Man, Boone never missed a game in his career. Today, he remains a broadcaster at 77 for the Jazz.

On This Date in 1975, the San Diego Conquistadors beat Dr. J and the Nets 176 to 166-the highest scoring game in ABA history. If ABA stats counted, that game would be the 3rd highest scoring game in pro hoops history-behind the Nuggets-Pistons in ‘83 and Kings-Clippers in ‘23.

At a mere six feet tall, Louie Dampier was one of the most significant ABA players. Dampier played in all nine ABA seasons, leading the Kentucky Colonels throughout its existence. He averaged 16 PPG and 5 APG during his ABA career and became part of the Hall of Fame in 2015.

OTD in 1975, the ABA champ Kentucky Colonels beat the NBA champ GS Warriors, 93-90. Ellie Brown and the Colonels had challenged the NBA and the Warriors to a “Super Bowl” between the Leagues but the NBA declined. This game was the alternative to that bigger potential battle.

Dan Issel was a 2x All American at Kentucky before joining the Colonels of the ABA in ‘71. He was a 6x ABA All Star. Issel remains today the leading scorer in Kentucky history and, if ABA stats were included in NBA records, would be 12th on the Pro Hoops list.

Darnell Hillman, Dr. Dunk, was a member of the Pacers for six years in the 70s, winning ABA championships in ‘72 and ‘73. Known for his aerial game and stylish Afro, Hillman competed in the famed ABA Dunk Contest of ‘76 and would then win the first NBA dunk event in ‘77.

In the coming days, you’ll hear more about Kevin Durant passing Moses Malone on the all time scoring list. But the truth is, if ABA stats counted, KD is still 2.5k points behind Moses. IF KD maintained his career 27 PPG, he would need another 1-2 seasons to pass Moses!
