During the Cold War, the Air Force created the Emergency Rocket Communications System that consisted of UHF transmitters placed on ICBMs, instead of a warhead, that would transmit nuclear orders if terrestrial command and control links had been destroyed.

The U.S. intelligence community was able to collect the satellite-to-ground signal used by the Soviets to monitor Yuri Gagarin's activities inside his Vostok space capsule. At various points, this particular signal was intercepted by U.S. SIGINT sites in Iran, Alaska, & Hawaii.

In 1967 US early warning radars malfunctioned, leading to concern that they were being jammed. In reality, solar flares were to blame. Due to events such as this, the Air Force regularly sends out space weather warnings when space weather will affect radar and HF communications
