مع ذلك لا يزال التنظيم يحتفظ بوجود في أماكن نائية متواريا عن الأنظار، ويخرج منها لشن هجمات في البلدين. وبعد هزيمة داعش، تكررت التقارير الغربية التي رصدت تحويل أموال من تركيا إلى عناصر داعش في سوريا بطرقة مختلفة، وبالفعل جرى فرض عقوبات على مؤسسات مالية في تركيا لتعاملها مع التنظيم

يتلقى داعش تحويلات مالية من تركيا إلى عناصره في سوريا والعراق، حيث يشن هناك هجمات من بين فنية وأخرى وكان العراق أعلن النصر على تنظيم داعش الإرهابي في أواخر عام 2017، بينما انهارت "خلافة" التنظيم المزعومة في سوريا بعد معارك الباغوز في ربيع عام 2019
