A really enjoyable time spent down in Sussex throwing balls at
@JohnSimpson_88
last week - great to get an insight into how he goes about his keeping, as well as some superb glove chat 🧤
This took me a LONG time to put together and it might be copyrighted but just want to show the sharpness of reactions from Bairstow.
The clock starts, bare in mind, when the ball hits the bat, not when it is visible to Bairstow, making reaction time even less!
Top take!
If anyone has listened to the latest
@gradecricketer
podcast,
@1an_Higgins
and
@sjjperry
discuss making a magazine solely for gloves. I thought I would turn that into reality! It will be printed with as much gloss as possible.
DOUBLE REACTIONS
Katchet ramps add one aspect of deviation, the tables then add another. This creates a brilliant reaction drill!
@chloe_hill97
and
@rhianna_southby
as per, showing us how it’s done!
Inspired by
@sparkyoleary1
’s numerous ramp drills!
A LITTLE BIT OF BUTTLEMAN
Top stumping this by Will Buttleman of
@essexcricket
2s. Reacts sharply to ball deviating off the pad and performs a great stumping! Almost hits the stumps with the wrong hand before correcting himself! Super work!
📹
@EssexCricket
All Saturday/Sunday cricket should be in coloured kit. Get the pink ball out so you can use it with any side screen (or none!) and let’s make club cricket more exciting!
What a stumping by
@JohnSimpson_88
this morning against Hampshire. The ball’s angled well into the pads and has seamed and swung away, past the bat. Batsman loses balance and Simpson, having tracked the ball well, quickly picks this up, taking the bails off.

@Middlesex_CCC
LEG SIDE PROGRESSION
Top work with
@rhianna_southby
and
@chloe_hill97
on leg side takes.
🏏 Tennis ball work
🏏 One hand no movement
🏏 Develop the snap
🏏 One hand plus snap
🏏 Two hands plus snap
🏏 Two hands with batter distraction
🏏 Match style with proper batter
MARSTON MAGIC
How about this for a take by
@BuryStEdmundsCC
keeper
@AlfieMarston
!! On what looks like a Bunsen burner, Marston does very well to get a hand to the ball before quickly removing the bails!
Outstanding work!
📹
@BuryStEdmundsCC
Not sure how this is anything other than Bairstow’s mistake. Over hadn’t been called, he wanders out of his crease and gets run out. Complete lack of awareness.
AGE IS BUT A NUMBER
Incredible efforts from Nino who is 73! A shining example that age is but a number. Truly inspirational drive and love for the game! So epic! We looked at leg side work during the session, trying to get legs to follow.
RT and spread the love!
ENGLAND U19 ALEX HORTON MASTERCLASS
What a great display of keeping it’s been from
@GlamCricket
’s Alex Horton during this U19 series against the West Indies. Enjoy especially how he sets himself close to off stump, this making his stumps lightning quick.
📹
@englandcricket
This stumping by
@Rossington17
is phenomenal!! Full ball, batter coming down the track and he keeps his hands strong, catching superbly in front of his eyes which results in lightning speed back to the stumps. Not a bad innings either!!
THAT TAYLOR DOUBLE
In yesterday’s session with
@VipersKSL
’s keepers
@chloe_hill97
and
@rhianna_southby
, we aimed to emulate the legendary
@Sarah_Taylor30
double take!
Needless to say, feeding the ball was almost as challenging as the catch, but we made it! Epic work!
Not only a condescending tweet, but why does all keeping work have to be in a high-intensity, game like environment? Don’t see anyone having a go at someone having a net because there’s no fielders or hitting some underarm feeds because someone’s not bowling 🙄
A THRELKELD SPECIAL
How good is this take from
@Thundercric
captain
@EllieThrelkeld
!
Stays low brilliantly as she moves across, never easy too when the ball goes between bat and pad and the batter is shuffling around. Ellie stays calm and completes a top stumping!
GET YOURSELF ACROSS
Great to catch up with
@batesy10_16
and predominantly talk keeping and coaching but to catch some myself too!
We discussed getting right across to the leg side with leg side takes and this one hand drill was exactly what was needed 👌
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS
Great first session with Molly, the latest addition to the Thursday
@VipersKSL
Keeping Club!
Leg side work a big focus (looking to get those feet past the leg stump when snapping across) then finishing with some reaction work!
🚨 England have announced their squad for the
#INDvENG
Test series begining in January 2024
🏏 Four specialist spinners in the squad
✅ Foakes recalled, Pope and Leach return
❌ Woakes, Lawrence, Jacks and Dawson won't feature
AN INCREDIBLE TRANSFORMATION
Jack (9) had never stood up properly before so we worked step by step to help him achieve this. The commitment and dedication he showed was awesome!
Here’s the step by step process we took. Very proud coach moment for me!
THE QUICKEST HANDS AROUND?!
Check out this brilliant piece of work from
@aldavies23
yesterday for
@lancscricket
! A great example of strong hands when stood up to the stumps!
Watch how close his hands are to the line of the stumps! 👌
📹
@SkyCricket
@englandcricket
SATURDAY STUMPING
Here’s
@Amara_Carr
with an exceptional stumping for
@Sunriserscrick
against the England Academy. The angle of the delivery, movement of the batter and the swing make this much more difficult than Carr makes it look. Brilliant work!
📹
@Sunriserscrick
This is brilliant from Foakes and he’s had an excellent session. Two good catches and he’s been thrown around a fair bit by the swing and the bowlers. Tough chance in the last over, but bottom edges stood up are never as simple as they seem
#ENGvSA
ONE HANDED AWESOME STUMPING
Little analysis of this brilliant stumping from the NSW U17 keeper.
Sadly no sound but hopefully the pictures do the talking!
Your daily reminder that you are human and will get things wrong at some point. That’s why the fusion stumps are so good because you can hit them when you’re annoyed!
Practice includes many failures, each a useful lesson.
THE BENCH
A brilliant session with Hugo yesterday! He wanted to work on going down leg when stood up, so we added the bench to ensure he stayed down for as long as possible, getting his head in line, especially with the fuller balls.
Some of these takes are outstanding!
For whoever needs to see this:
YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD/YOUNG/TALL/SMALL/BIG/LITTLE TO KEEP WICKET.
Wicket keeping is for everybody and anybody. Good fun too!
CATCHING ON SLOW WICKETS
This take is anything but simple. What tends to happen on slow wickets is that keepers will have to stand closer so the ball carries.
Downside of this is that the edges come much faster! Great take by
@sambillings
BEN FOAKES IS BACK
Can’t wait to watch Foakes play in the test side once more!
Here’s an analysis of a brilliant diving catch of his from a few years back.
CHRIS READ
Two great stumpings from the 2014 bicentinary game the MCC had against the rest of the world. Here’s a very short analysis of those two.
Cheers
@JonKerslake
for reminding me of this game yesterday!

@HomeOfCricket
STANDING UP TO SEAM:
This is a great drill if you have a goal at your club/school.
Key points to remember:
🏏Stay low and rise with the ball
🏏Get your head in line with the ball
🏏Catch the ball as close to the line of the stumps as possible
🏏Strong hands not soft hands
REPEATABLE TRIGGERS
So, two drops from Bairstow in gif form below. Have a look at his triggers below. First one is the inside edge off Carey - trigger looks balanced and smooth. Second is the outside edge last night - look at the weight he puts on the right foot.
#Ashes2023
THE SNAP
🏏 Head and hands work together first.
🏏 The outside foot starts the motion.
🏏 Stays low as he snaps quickly across to the leg side.
🏏 As he shuffles, hand goes back to the stumps.
How good from NZ keeper Cam Fletcher!
REACTION CATCHES STANDING BACK
Awesome session with
@chloe_hill97
@rhianna_southby
and
@Megansturge6
yesterday, focusing on standing back for half the session.
Fast underarms needed for this and the
@AirlanderSport
mat a massive win too!
Which is your favourite catch?
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS
A brilliant session today with
@chloe_hill97
- focusing heavily on spin, especially when balls rise and turn over or near the stumps.
Got the
@AirlanderSport
mat out at the end for some stood back work at the end for good measure.👌
One of the most effective ways to train - adding a batter to make it as match specific as possible.
@rhianna_southby
and
@chloe_hill97
working on their leg side takes this week, some brilliant grabs!
Awesome to have the opportunity to work with the
@VipersKSL
each week!
CATCH IN FRONT OF YOUR RYES
Been impressed with Carey this series, especially stood back. Really enjoy how he keeps his hands strong and catches in front of his eyes. Benefit of this is there is minimal head movement to track the ball.
Took me ages to make this graphic 😂
BEN FOAKES STOOD BACK
A little analysis of Foakes stood back, having watched him keep for Surrey 2s this week. Great to see him back playing cricket, hopefully not too long until he’s back in the England setup.
📹
@surreycricket
RIDICULOUS RICHARDSON STUMPING 🧤
Absolutely quality legside take from Ross Richardson for
@NorthantsCCC
2s on Tuesday!
Lightning down the leg side ⚡️⚡️
HOW FAST IS THAT?!
What a brilliant stumping this was by
@EllieThrelkeld
for the Manchester Originals last week! Here’s a breakdown of why it was so good!
If anyone knows how to get a long sleeve Manchester Originals shirt, please let me know 😂
📹
@thehundred
#TheHundred
This is a serious stumping! Proper off the training ground stuff - batter being really annoying and getting the ball to go between their legs. Great stuff from McManus!
MISTAKES ARE GOOD
Best time to learn is when things don’t quite happen how we hoped they would.
Getting things wrong is not a bad thing, but just another hurdle in mastering the skill.
Respect to
@chloe_hill97
and
@rhianna_southby
who wanted to show that drops do happen!
Appreciate those that have watched the videos, come for sessions, liked a tweet, anything to help this page and the coaching journey grow. Lots of cool things to come!
Thoughts on this?
I feel if Bairstow is in a position where the big jag back is easier to take, anything that doesn’t turn is easily accessed as it’s outside off stump. Too wide and you run the risk of missing those ones that turn and spit.
CATCH AND ROLL
How awesome are these grabs from
@rhianna_southby
and
@chloe_hill97
?!
The roll is almost as important as the catch itself. It all comes from the “inside” hip driving around and the opening of that “outside” hip and foot to push off towards the ball.
Huge thank you to
@Oxoncb
for having me down yesterday for their coach development day.
Massive thank you to
@MarcusCampo
for the invite. Coaching in the county in very safe hands with a great group of dedicated coaches!
THE SIMPSON FIVE
Great way to finish a session with a bit of reaction work. Similar to the one we saw
@JohnSimpson_88
do during The Hundred last summer.
Great work from
@thecricketkid1
here, especially that last take! 👏
SANJU SAMSON ANALYSIS
Great piece of work that Sanju Samson posted on his Instagram page. Here’s my analysis of it.
Always beneficial when a pitch has good pace and carry (rarely seen in England) but take nothing away from his quick movements to the leg side!
@bobbydugnutt111
@jackrussellart
@wickyai
@KeeperCourt
@WK_Union
The difficulty of this catch comes from how close it is to the body. He can’t push off as he’ll go past it so it literally becomes a fall where you’ve got to get your leg out the way in order for your arm to access the ball. It’s one of the real challenging takes for a keeper
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS
Back at the Ageas with the
@VipersKSL
and
@Megansturge6
last week.
We looked at catching as many balls as possible, with particular focus on those wider ones and down the leg side.
Great to be back! 🧤
CRACKING COOKE STUMPING
Yet another great piece of work from
@GlamCricket
’s
@Cooky_24
- seems every couple of weeks Cooke is doing something outstanding!
Stays low well and keeps hands strong, lovely work.
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS
Great first session with
@BucksCCC
keeper Ross. Main agenda was volume, catching as many balls as we could in the hour.
Well worth watching the whole thing to see the snaps across - lightning feet down leg! 🔥
DISTRACTIONS+
Brilliant afternoon working with the
@VipersKSL
keepers
@chloe_hill97
and
@rhianna_southby
Our big focus was adding distractions and with the mannequin plus the cones, there has some serious distraction along with some incredible variable bounce off the cones!
USING A GOAL
Worked with a small group of U9s yesterday on their keeping skills. The goal is a great distraction piece as almost every ball gets deflected by the net slightly, so quick reactions are needed to adjust to the movement.
THE OFFSIDE STEP
Worked with Ross yesterday on his step to the offside, allowing for a quick push back to the stumps.
Ross wanted to stop stepping slightly backwards and work more laterally so he put something behind his foot to avoid this.
It was his phone! Effective!
SESSION WITH MAX CHU 🧤
Made the trip over to
@HalsteadCC
on Monday night to have a session with
@OtagoCricket
keeper Max Chu.
We looked at balls that pop up, moving the outside foot in order to create space for the hands without falling to leg.
Top bloke, top session! 🙌
SOUND OF A QUALITY CATCH 🔊
Nothing better than the sound of a good catch. It’s deeper in tone as it hits the palms and gives a great ‘thud.’ Really easy measure of how well you’ve caught something is through the sound.
Pay close attention next time you train!
