So let’s say you’re an up and coming 4 piece band that gets an offer to open for a more established band for a 3 week tour. The rooms they are playing are between 1,500 and 2,500 capacity and they’re on the coast you live on, so you don’t even need to fly anywhere. Nice! 🧵

⁃your agent who got you the tour takes 10% of the gross which is $300. So that takes down to $2,700 a week. Your manager also takes 15% of the gross which is $450. So now working with $2,250.

You sell some merch, but not a ton as most of the people are there to see the headliner. Let’s say you sell $2,000 a week’s worth. After manufacturing costs and venue merch cuts, that puts about $1,500 a week back in your pocket. So you’re in the hole about $1,000 a week to tour.

Unfortunately none of the venues provide backline so you need to bring your own. You have a car, but not one big enough for all your gear so you need to rent a van. You find a deal on Turo for about $200 a day including taxes. That’s $2,400 a week. You are now at -$300 a week.
