192.1 IP, 292 K, 2.62 ERA, 13.7 K/9, 6.49 K/BB.... What this guy is doing this year is an absolute joke. It’s gotten to the point where scrolling through my feed and seeing 100 painted on the black with 10+ Ks is completely normal to see from Cole.

I’ve ditched out traditional static stretching warm up for some movement prep with our younger campers. Every morning, each kid gets a PVC pipe and practices learning how to hip hinge - along with a squat, lunge, and glute bridge.

Really good thought from @ZachDechant : “The real conditioning is skill-specific. The ability to throw 90 pitches in a game doesn’t come from road work and miles on the legs. It comes from building throwing workloads gradually & the ability of the body to handle those workloads.”

Stop taking get-me-over curveballs in neutral/plus counts. Start depositing them into the seats. Pitchers at all levels are stealing strikes with average breaking balls in counts where auto takes are required until 2K. I think it’s time we rethink this “strategy.”

Love the cue “Extension through rotation.” Push off the rubber might be one of the most common cues I hear from coaches/kids, but it never actually happens in high velocity throwers/hitters.

Teaching pitchers to hinge is huge for incorporating the glutes to get pelvic rotation. No better way than @LantzWheeler core velo belt. Essentially tricking the nervous system by feeding the compensation of being quad and anterior push dominant!

I love shooting balls into the oppo gap, but I don’t love when it’s the only thing you can do. Being able to pure a baseball to the pull side gap is a skill. And it gives you a ton of information about your swing. Which means we can - and should - do it well.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you can’t out-mental game bad moves. If your swing sucks, taking a deep breath before each at bat won’t help you hit the ball any better.

More movement is not bad. Bad movement is bad. Before you shorten a kid up, consider what it would look like if you gave him the freedom to experiment with a bigger move. Sometimes it’s exactly what they need to sync their swing up. 91 mph / 318 ft ain’t bad for 13, either.

Today I got the most excited I’ve been in weeks watching a high school kid hit an indoor PR at 77 mph. On the outside, it’s not that exciting. I’ve caught 3 different guys who all throw 90+ in the last week. But for him, that was a big deal. And we’re going to celebrate it.

Starting to view chest out while rotating as a big contributor to bat path. If the chest rounds, it has to compensate to buy space for the arms to deliver the barrel. But if the chest stays out, the barrel has space to turn & get on plane early. @ArmoryFlorida 🧵

Path adjustments are hard to cue up. It’s a lot more effective to pair the right hitter with the right combo of bats, give them an external goal, and then put them into an environment where the goal/bat will create the desired path.

As kids transition back into season, we have to put a premium on their daily habits and routines. Every time we pick up a bat or ball, we have an opportunity to either 1) develop good movement habits, or 2) develop poor movement habits. Every day we're getting better, or worse.

We talk a lot at @ArmoryFlorida about getting the first move right for pitchers, but it’s also where we often start with our hitters. When evaluating the back leg, we typically group hitters into one of 2 buckets: 1) under active (sway/shift), or 2) over active (stack/push). 🧵

Been seeing a lot of complex pitching/hitting mechanical "breakdowns." We really don't have to make this thing that hard: 1) Keep the middle in the middle 2) Find a point of leverage 3) Pull out slack 4) Move from the middle out The rest is more style than substance.

Telling a hitter he’s “early” or “late” is about as useful as telling him the color of his shirt. Observations are not coaching strategies. They’re just observations - but with potential to turn into positive interactions. But saying “just be early” doesn’t cut it. (1/4)

I don’t understand the whole under vs. over rotating thing. You either rotate well, or you don’t rotate well. And if you’re focused on stopping rotation because you “over-rotate,” you actually stop rotating. Which would fall under the category of bad rotation.

The average big league fastball in 2023 was 94.2. But you’re getting worked up because your swing doesn’t look perfect off flips.

A quote to ponder: “If you can find a way to change the number without making a change in behavior, the metric is bad.”

Met some awesome people, learned a ton, and received a compliment from @EricCressey about my Buffalo Bills phone case😎. Doesn’t get much better than that. Thanks for putting on a great event Eric and @pete_dupuis !

Put on an absolute clinic on the Keiser yesterday (commentary by @Z_Miller22 ). One of the more impressive things I’ve seen. And he’s got a pretty damn good set of brakes in the box, too. Was awesome having you around yesterday 👊

If the foot rotates before the hip, you are not “firing” your hips (idek what that means?). Efficient rotation is proximal to distal. The hip must rotate first. The foot cannot drive the hip. The hip rotates around the foot. Why would you just actively give up the ground?

Certain waterbag movements are tough to replicate with speed - agreed. But below are 4D graphs of 3 different waterbag drills with 3 different hitters. Peak trunk rotational speeds in the 800-900 degrees/sec range are plenty fast for me.

What you can do with a water bag you can do with greater speed and control with just your body weight and/or a lighter weight med ball. They’re overused and we’re over complicating things with the only reason being “insert big words to sound smart to whoever asked the question”

Our closest friendships will fall apart without work. Our best skills will fade without practice. The things that become important to us are not a one time purchase. They require continuous investment of time & sweat equity. You have to re-earn who you want to become.

Most people think coaches just draw up whiteboard plays, blow whistles & yell at refs. This is actually what coaching looks like: Being in front of a group of young men with broken hearts who trust you and need you to find the right words when none are left to say. Well done.
