βyou donβt look like a physicistβ always has me like ??????????
i donβt know what you mean. i am a physicist, so....... i actually do look like one
this morning
@That_SoulSister
became the 4th Black woman to earn a physics PhD from the University of Chicago. congratulations Dr. Andrea Bryant, so very proud of you !! π
today we marched to eradicate anti-Black racism in academia that ultimately pushes out people who look like us. in 127 years,
@uchicago
physics has awarded PhDs to only two Black women. Andrea & i will be the third & fourth!

hi, iβm a black woman in physics. you may know me from my greatest hits, including
βNo, Iβm Not Lostβ
βPlease Donβt Touch My Hairβ
βSorry Iβm Not Done Speaking Yetβ
& the crowd favorite:
βYou May Be an Expert in Physics But I Have 25 Years of Experience Being a Black Womanβ
i wonder if departments removing the GRE requirement this year bc of covid recognize the huge opportunity they missed to commit to anti-racism by dropping it forever
what does this phrase 'stick to physics' even mean lmao, as if physics doesn't continue to be a male dominated field. as if physics isn't still being integrated. as if my existence in physics is somehow separate from the science i contribute. this is physics honey
#blackinphysicsrollcall
hi! iβm a sixth year
@uchicago
PhD student. i study how neutrinos interact with matter using the MicroBooNE detector at fermilab, a contribution to searches for physics beyond the standard model + solving the matter/antimatter asymmetry of our Universe.
In the past 48hrs, the USA horrifically lost 34 people to mass shootings.
On average, across any 48hrs, we also loseβ¦
500 to Medical errors
300 to the Flu
250 to Suicide
200 to Car Accidents
40 to Homicide via Handgun
Often our emotions respond more to spectacle than to data.
i want academic departments to critically examine the ways they shift responsibility of toxic working environments onto their students. and then do better
im building particle detectors, speaking at conferences, working on my PhD, creating diversity/inclusion initiatives in my field AND shaking my fine ass in the clubs every weekend.
letβs stop this narrative queen π
#WeCanBeBoth
βWhen you ask women why they left, the number one reason they cite is balancing work/life responsibilities β which as far as I can tell is a euphemism for family concerns.β
*whispers* an environment that does not allow women to balance work/life is another form of sexism
Itβs Physics Friday!
In honor of Juneteenth, we highlight the first Black American to earn a PhD in physics, Dr.Edward Bouchet (1852-1918).

hi folks! my name is katrina, i'm a fifth year PhD candidate
@uchicago
, a collaborator on the
@microboone
experiment
@fermilab
, & a Mellon/NSF/Ford fellow π
i study the properties of neutrinos, specifically flavor oscillations & cross sections!
how the fuck am i supposed to care about neutrino cross sections when there is no justice for breonna taylor, the president is planning a coup, & the health pandemic continues to worsen. HOW
66 black women earned physics doctorates at US universities from 1973 to 2012, compared with more than 22,000 white men and over 2,400 white women.
sixty-six. in 40 years.
yall, writing this plenary has been a trip down memory lane. i started at duke with no exposure to physics or calculus, & this is me right after i had finished the last requirement for my senior thesis. first time i felt like a real scientist π
i rarely speak on this but realized today marks 7 years of recovery for me β¨ been practicing self love & mindfulness ever since.
itβs also time for new affirmations so hereβs my old ones βΊοΈ last one is still my fav
i know iβm an upper level grad student bc every so often iβll catch myself conversing about physics & think βwowww look me at sounding like i know what iβm talking aboutβ β¨
before i attend yet another "overcoming imposter syndrome" workshop, i'd love to see just as many resources allocated toward faculty workshops like "how to not make your students feel like they don't belong here" π
hey academics - there are black & brown students once again dealing with systemic racism against their own communities who are expected to continue on with work & proceed with business as usual
pls keep in mind as you mentor these students
science ISNβT objective.
the way we think - what questions we ask, how we observe/analyze, & our methods of problem solving - is linked to the experiences weβve had.
thus diversity in the classroom is absolutely beneficial & necessary to advance scientific knowledge.
the best thing you can do for your Black students is to let them know it's ok to not be productive during this time. lift that weight off their shoulders
mommmm ππ
this morning i found an email she wrote me four years ago: "please find time to look at this" w a link to the NSF GRFP, she's not even in science just always on the lookout for resources for her daughter π₯° & look at me now, a 2018 nsf fellow π
universities wanna diversify but don't wanna let go of traditions/practices that actively push bipoc away. workshops on navigating unhealthy academic environments are cool but ultimately short term bandaids. get rid of the toxicity!!!!
@RyanPlestid
@PasseVivant
as a product of a recruitment program, i can tell you from personal experience it's not only unfair but incredibly damaging to lure us into academic spaces without already having fixed the ideologies & systemic structures that push us out.
an example of why i have not minded WFH: it was my first day back at the lab so i had to get my badge renewed
white woman at the desk: βyou must be katrina! i thought you would have been russian. but you are DEFINITELY not, hahahahaβ
me: ??????
asked my s/o to attend my colloquium so he could learn more about what i do. in it i mentioned that the potassium in bananas can decay into neutrinos. today i found this π glad heβs paying attention
funny you say that because iβve co-founded & been running a scholarship / mentoring network for women of color in STEM graduating from my old high school the past 2 years. put your money where your mouth is & donate at this link!
@iamstemproject
Using Physics as your template for how science works makes you stupid about science. Physics is a weird little science with a very simplistic causal structure. Itβs fundamental laws are universal. They operate always and everywhere. No other science is like that.
Took my own headshot today. Despite/because being post-exercise sleepy, didn't want to put on much makeup, just some brow and lip. A little
@hiwildflower
dianthus goes a long way on the lip:

the recruitment > retention approach gives me this vibe too. "we don't have BIPOC students bc they're just not interested in science! we need to recruit!"
refocus that energy inward & eradicate the racism in your department. it's not us, it's you.
henrietta lacks lived down the street from my grandma in turner stationβ¦ i went to visit last month & found out sheβs family π her son married my cousin
Family of a Black woman whose cervical cancer cells were taken without consent for research in 1951 are suing a biotech firm for compensation.
Henrietta Lacks died in a Johns Hopkins "colored ward."
Her cells were used to develop HIV meds plus HPV, polio and COVID-19 vaccines.
another one: faculty opposition to formalizing mentorship expectations & conflict resolution. "students are adults! they need to learn to handle issues on their own!"
nah, power imbalances are real. you just don't want to be held accountable for your trash mentorship
@RyanPlestid
@PasseVivant
in other words, i don't care how much you pour into recruitment programs. if a black person in the department tells me not to come there, aint no way in hell i'm going.
@RyanPlestid
@PasseVivant
the oversight is that you are not acknowledging the community of
#blackandstem
scholars that *already* exists in academia.
you're viewing lack of representation as "why aren't black students coming", i view lack of representation as "why aren't black students stayingβ
@RyanPlestid
@PasseVivant
i will always promote the philosophy that retention is your best recruitment strategy. take care of the black students you already have bc we all know & talk to each other about our experiences at different institutions.
like recognize the privilege it is to define "doing physics" as just that .. doing science. no micro/macro aggressions, no fighting imposter syndrome, no proving to your colleagues that you belong. all of that is encompassed in my working definition of doing physics
79 years ago today in
#UChicago
history, Enrico Fermi and fellow scientists successfully achieved the world's first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction.
i remember trying to explain to a previous advisor that his unrealistic work expectations were giving me extreme anxiety. he basically told me "well, anxiety sounds like something internal you need to learn to deal with" HUH
this white woman on fb told me that instead of recording karens & posting online black folk should just call the cops
π₯΄ like how out of touch can you be? iβm tired
omg, this was my absolute fav show back in elementary school. used to rush home everyday to watch it then spend the evening making up my own math problems. they even had a black girl !! honestly can't believe it took me until college to even consider a career in STEM
.
@microboone
just produced the FIRST Black woman to graduate with a physics phd from
@yale
, 143 years after the first Black man to get a phd (in physics but also, in anything) graduated from yale.
congratulations Dr. Russell!! living history <3
