I moved to Birmingham 3 and a bit years ago and part of that decision was down to the feeling this city gave me which I can’t really put into words but it’s just *there*. It’s like the feeling we all had when the Commonwealth Games was on -
Yes. I don’t drive so I walk everywhere (when I’m not on public transport) and let me tell you it’s horrible to be a pedestrian in some parts of this city. I would also love to cycle but I’m too scared, and I worry for the brave people who do!!!
Worth emphasizing that this is a matter of deliberate policy.
There are so many people in this great city who want to get around by walking and wheeling, but are rightly reluctant because our roads have been designed to endanger people without cars.
Is the New York High-line the coolest retrofit example?
💰 Generates ~$1B for the city
🌳 Much needed green space
📈 Added 35-50% to existing real estate values
OBSESSED that Captain Tom’s family tried to get their spa building through the Council’s heritage assessment by saying that it was required for charitable purposes including presentations to the press???
No conversation of interwar London apartment blocks is complete without my favourite (and the favourite of Soviet spies), the Isokon building, built 1933.
I know we have discussed this before but it is mad that you can get back to Birmingham from London this much later on a weeknight compared to the weekend
The funniest part is I moved here to study Urban Planning at UoB because I thought Birmingham was doing a lot of interesting stuff and had a good vision. Laughable now
As much as I appreciate my male friends with similar interests I would love to find more women who like infrastructure/transport/buildings etc. outside of work! Where are you :(
⚠️BREAKING NEWS // Birmingham City Council's planning committee have just approved plans for the demolition of Smallbrook Ringway Centre.
Another devastating assault on the city's post-war heritage and a failure of imagination to not renew and repurpose this landmark building.
I’m pledging to launch an international architectural competition to build a NEW BRIDGE connecting the Jewellery Quarter & Colmore Row 🌉
The link between two of Brum’s best areas isn’t good enough, we have to deliver an accessible link that celebrates the city’s heritage 🏗️

I saw someone say they enjoy using good urban design to maximise the potential of the sites they develop - they produce this sort of crap
- I think a lot of it comes from our built environment and the places that are uniquely Brum, perhaps like Station Street, and it’s like the Council will just let developers tear that character away for any old crap now
Imagine getting off the train at 'Stirchley' and realising you have to walk 15 mins to caneat for brunch... 7 minute eggs? More like 15 minute eggs.
