Last night, around 8:50pm, the Oxford encampment was attacked by six men who arrived in a taxi. They ripped down banners, screamed at students and made threats. Protesters did not engage and de-escalators moved local community members away from the attackers. 1/

One of the men repeatedly screamed: “I’ll fucking k*ll you.” I was grateful that there were well-trained people working hard to de-escalate. At times, they physically placed themselves between the attackers and the encampment, as you can see in this video. 5/

All student stayed inside the fence, except the de-escalators who tried to keep passersby from engaging. @AJArabic was live when the attack started, and you can see the cameraman on the right recording. They were also aggressive with press on site, including me. 3/

The attack had occurred just as the camp was gathering for a vigil. By the time I walked back, the vigil had commenced. Students took turns reading obituaries before the camp observed a minute of silence. 9/
