Last night, around 8:50pm, the Oxford encampment was attacked by six men who arrived in a taxi. They ripped down banners, screamed at students and made threats. Protesters did not engage and de-escalators moved local community members away from the attackers. 1/

One of the men repeatedly screamed: “I’ll fucking k*ll you.” I was grateful that there were well-trained people working hard to de-escalate. At times, they physically placed themselves between the attackers and the encampment, as you can see in this video. 5/

The attack had occurred just as the camp was gathering for a vigil. By the time I walked back, the vigil had commenced. Students took turns reading obituaries before the camp observed a minute of silence. 9/

After that interaction, I walked back to the encampment. It was dark and I felt like the six men would continue to try to escalate. I also worried some of them might circle around to attack the encampment, and if they did I wanted to be there. 8/

Historians already recognize the protests & encampments for Palestine are historic & significant. That’s one of the reasons I’m documenting it — books will be written about this wave of transnational solidarity with Gaza. History is on the @OxAct4Pal students’ minds too.

Another shot from yesterday’s @OxAct4Pal protest outside the University of Oxford admin building. 16 students were arrested during a peaceful sit-in of an office and protestors were met with violence by the cops.

Besides faculty, students, staff and people from Oxford stopping by the @OxAct4Pal encampment, on Monday @CWUnews and NHS worker joined a vigil held in camp.

Protesting Oxford students stood silently in the rain outside the convening of Congregation (the sovereign body of the University of Oxford). In academic gowns, they held photos of Gaza’s destroyed universities and statements from Palestinian students and teachers.
