As his daughter, I grew up watching my dad serve the nation at MNDF where he received accolades from military institutions & universities all over the world, & obtained three masters degrees. His commitment was indisputable. I can’t express how happy I am to see justice served.

I wonder if there will be an app like share the meal if Male’ goes into extended lockdown, so that people who are able can help those who may need assistance with buying weekly essentials. Not meant to replace/negate government aid, but to supplement aid efforts.

If you’re just now realising how prevalent & entrenched sexual harassment & violence are in Maldives, you’re privileged. It means that you have not been forced to face that stark reality over & over again. It means that ‘1 in 3 women’ has always been just a statistic to you.

Talking to any female relative over the age of 60, even if for a few minutes, about their lives when they were younger reveals just how strong they have had to be. In a time without awareness on rights, as humans, as women, they had to raise families while they were children.

Adults, be it teachers, parents, whomever, are NOT infallible. Teaching by example should include adults owning up to mistakes & apologizing to children where it is warranted, without it being seen as an admission of failure, but rather an acknowledgment that to err is human.

The Ibbe case is shining a light on how deep this issue runs. People truly believe that a man his age can ‘date’ a 17 year old and any subsequent marriage is ‘okay’ because it’s what happens, it’s what our relatives have been engaging in. It’s not.

They had to undergo all sorts of things we can’t fathom today, at the hands of their families, in-laws, and even colleagues. They didn’t have the luxury of coming on social media and finding the support of virtual communities who would rally behind them.

Although we want to hope that some part of society is beyond the culture of abuse, that all ‘allies’ are good, we must remain vigilant. The context of identifying red flags needs to be widened to encompass social justice circles, the use of social media & all aspects of life.

Today, we see the importance of ‘being political’ & ensuring that those in power are accountable, appropriate policies are implemented, funds are traceable, & positions are given to capable, qualified leaders. In times of crises, all our lives are in their hands.

I wonder how many people calling for Velizinee’s head on social media also posted RIP Chester Bennington posts. How easily these people pick and choose whom to offer compassion to. Compassion everyone deserves.

As global movements become accessible through social media, each generation becomes more conscious than the last. For instance, what we are seeing in the past weeks of sexual violence survivors coming forward.

@zueshan Perhaps, focusing on strengthening civil societies that focus solely on such matters, devote manpower to compiling statements and evidence, and providing support so that a culture is created where victims can come forward and have it mean something should be the focus?

I don’t expect politicians or public figures to be perfect or infallible. I do, however, expect them to be accountable and to do better when legitimately criticized - as opposed to taking any and all constructive criticism as a personal attack or, worse, a sign of ‘disloyalty’.

@zueshan Recent examples, Mughni, Ziyada. People came out publicly & were accused of lying, using the accusations to come out for their own personal gain, accused of being vindictive or the personal favorite of ‘crazy’. Public shaming & evidence didn’t stop Anni from interacting w Mughni.

Why they try to cultivate (for lack of a better word) ‘cool’ personas, whose approval younger generations would want, allowing them to push boundaries. It is terrifying how many people parrot social justice language as a facade for their abusive ways.

“If ignorance of the law is no excuse, drafters of laws and legal instruments carry a significant burden, to make their meanings clear.” The programme outlines for the #CLC23 are so interesting; I can’t wait to attend.
