It explores the tense relations between Israel’s longest-serving premier and the Israeli security community.
Gallup: An overwhelming majority of Israelis (81%) approve of U.S. leadership, yet more Israelis (52%) continue to disapprove of Netanyahu's leadership than approve of it.
President Biden is the leader Israelis wish they had.

140 Israeli filmmakers are boycotting a West Bank film fund established by a Netanyahu loyalist. "We call on the Israel Academy of Film and Television, its members and leaders, not to turn Israeli cinema into another tool to oppress the Palestinian people," wrote the filmmakers.
Ex-Shin Bet Chief Yuval Diskin, speaking at tonight's pro-democracy demonstration, said that Israel hasn't always had good prime ministers, but in contrast to Netanyahu, they put the country's interests ahead of their personal interests. Netanyahu, he said, isn't fit to lead.

Throughout most of Netanyahu's career, he had no obvious replacement. That's changed dramatically in the last year, with centrist Benny Gantz seen as the clear favorite on the question of fitness for office. 52% of Israelis favor Gantz (vs 26% for Bibi), per today's Ma'ariv poll.
According to Ch. 12 news, Israel’s Supreme Court is set to invalidate the Reasonableness Standard Law passed by the Netanyahu government last July despite massive public opposition.
If true, this would be a major blow for the illiberal forces in Israel, a big win for democracy.

Biden’s explicit statement urging Bibi to halt the judicial overhaul legislation is the most pro-Israel move an American president can make at this time.
Important scoop by

If this plan was truly aimed at peace, the Palestinians would have been consulted — and invited, its principal architect (Greenblatt) would not have quit midway, and it would be addressed after the Israeli elections.
This isn’t a peace plan. It’s a plan to re-elect Netanyahu.
Members of the Druze community are joining the hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy demonstrations in Israel this evening.
Tonight marks the 15th consecutive week(!) of massive protests against the Netanyahu government's judicial overhaul.

Declaring the 2-state solution dead doesn't make it dead. To quote Mark Twain, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."
Yes, it's been dying for years, but it can come back to life. It's a question of political will.
The "one-state solution," though, is a non-starter.

Dozens of ex-parliamentarians from the Israeli left: The Netanyahu government must be replaced immediately, Israel must strive for a diplomatic settlement that would ensure security and independence for Israelis and Palestinians.
2 questions for
@RJC
:
1. Did you condemn previous Israeli premiers’ use of the term “occupation,” including settlement-builder Ariel Sharon?
2. Did you condemn the many Israeli ex-generals and intel chiefs who have called — and continue to call — for an end to the occupation?
Quite remarkable that a religious nationalist who once served as the director of Yesha (the settlers’ lobby) and who opposes the 2-state solution — a man who is to the right of Netanyahu, ideologically — is explicitly opposing a right-wing/religious government.
Many were quick to point fingers at Israeli airstrikes for the tragic Gaza hospital blast, which seems to have resulted from rockets launched from within Gaza, not Israel.
This thread shows videos, including those from Arab & Palestinian media outlets, of the failed projectile.
Surveillance camera footage from Netiv Haasara shows a large barrage of rockets being launched from northern Gaza, followed by a massive blast in the Strip, apparently caused by a failed projectile.
1. Liberal Zionists aren’t playing any games. That is pure cynicism on your part, Yousef, and you’re being unfair to the many Israelis who’ve dedicated their lives to peace.
2. Just as it’s wrong to portray a monolithic Palestinian identity, Zionists aren’t all Likud supporters
Liberal Zionists play this game where they say they want the occupation to end but they don't call for any shift in US policy that would hold Israel accountable for entrenching it. In doing so, they are just doing damage control PR for the occupation itself.
Sixty former MKs and government ministers have signed a declaration warning that annexation will destroy the chances for peace and turn Israel into an apartheid state.

op-ed, I argue that West Bank annexation is antithetical to Israel’s national security interests. Its friends in Washington can help the moderate elements in Israel’s new coalition thwart Netanyahu’s dangerous annexationist agenda.
Benjamin Netanyahu is the worst leader in Jewish history since the Maccabean king who invited the Romans into Jerusalem over 2100 years ago. The Prime Minister is putting the security of Israel, the lives of the hostages, the stability of the region, and longstanding Israeli
Netanyahu's defense minister, a retired general and a member of Likud, joins numerous ex-generals and former senior intelligence officials in publicly opposing the government's legal overhaul.
This is a face-off between the Israeli security community and the populist right.
BREAKING: Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant calls for an immediate suspension of the judicial overhaul legislation until after independence day (April 25th) and says continuation of the legislation is a threat to Israel's national security
Wow - Benny Gantz is now regarded as the best fit for the premiership, overtaking Netanyahu by 7 points! The ex-defense minister & IDF chief has been the biggest beneficiary from the democracy demonstrations.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid is tied with Netanyahu on this question.
This is the 9th consecutive week of massive demonstrations in Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities to protest the far-right government's legal coup.
Democracy in action.

The NYT editorial board's scathing rebuke of the emerging Netanyahu government is a must read for anyone who cares about Israeli democracy, security, "and even the idea of a Jewish homeland." Well done,
@nytimes

Benjamin Netanyahu’s government “is a significant threat to the future of Israel — its direction, its security and even the idea of a Jewish homeland,” the Times editorial board writes.
A video of Pres. Biden sleeping during his meeting w/ PM Bennett is being widely circulated by right-wing pundits. Some are mocking the President; others, feigning outrage at his disrespect.
The video is fake. Here's the unedited clip of their exchange.
Likud party activists have issued talking points arguing that the Pittsburgh synagogue murderer was inspired to do so by HIAS, "a left-wing Jewish group that promoted immigration to the U.S. & worked against Trump."

The “two-state solution is dead” mantra is popular on Twitter, but we need to keep in mind that it remains the preferred solution to a plurality, if not quite the majority, of both Palestinians and Israelis.
Support for the two-state solution among Palestinians increased this month to 46% (up from 36% month before). This is a source of hope, and underscores the urgency of preserving a political horizon for negotiated solution. The Israeli and Palestinian publics are on the same page.
On this first day of the new year, Israeli democracy has scored a major victory.
Israel's Supreme Court has just invalidated the Reasonableness Standard Law that the Netanyahu government passed last July as part of its judicial reform agenda aimed at weakening the Supreme Court.
As someone who believes that ending the occupation ought to top Israel’s national priorities, I have always found the Palestinian custom of celebrating terrorist attacks to be highly disturbing — not to mention counterproductive to the goal of ending the occupation.
Agree w/
@BarakRavid
that Israel "can't get much more out of this operation in Gaza," just as there was no discernible benefit to Israel in 2014 war w/ Hamas. A cease-fire this week seems plausible.
Balad, an Arab party that ran separately this time around, is reportedly close to crossing the electoral threshold (3.25%). Should it do so, this could potentially be a game changer in terms of blocking the formation of a Netanyahu government. Stay tuned.

It's fashionable to argue that Palestinians today favor a "one-state solution" and that the two-state solution is "dead." Now let's see what Palestinians really prefer:
Only 9% favor the one-state solution; nearly half -- 49% -- continue to support the two-state solution.
A new Palestinian public opinion poll conducted by our partners at the Palestinian Peace Coalition, together with PCPSR shows that:
49% of Palestinians support the two-state solution (of which 56% are from Gaza, 44% are from the West Bank) [1/5]
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki: "The Palestinian Authority is ready to resume negotiations with any Israeli prime minister who will succeed in forming a government."
In a post-Bibi era, saving the two-state solution is possible despite the obstacles on this road.
