My friend, IM
@BThorfinnsson
is one of the most inventive players I know. Here he played such a weird move that we thought there was a DGT error! 22.Rec1!? has a very interesting idea. First off if black takes on c6 the bishop on h2 only has the b8 square. Then Ba6 wins back
I had been completely lost, I was gonna resign at one point if he played a certain move. I am over the worst here but with the clock ticking my excitement level went over the moon when I spotted the sequence for black here!

Do YOU want to GET BETTER at CHESS? Of course you do! One of the key ways to do that is to improve your PATTERN RECOGNITION. In this position from my online blitz game I spotted a pattern. It's black to move here and he has a killer blow!

Your goal is to get THIS position after four moves by each side. It took four of my friends who total over 8.000 elo points 48 minutes to solve it. It's not that difficult though, tricky still but not that difficult! Can YOU solve it?

The only sad thing is this "take". PogChamps is literally taking nothing away from any event and it's bringing in massive numbers of new chess fans and lovers. I don't see the problem. I've been watching and enjoying, and these matches are much more relatable for casual fans.
If someone started playing basketball late in life say at 19, they wouldn't expect to make it to the NBA, would they? Yet when people start chess they think they'll make Grandmaster. There are 5k NBA players ever and 2k GM's ever and more people play chess! The math isn't hard!

I think it was
@PHChess
who once showed this puzzle in Iceland. The pieces might have been on different squares and I misremembered but the idea works in this position. White makes one move and after that move it should be clear what the result of the game is!

True! Sardoche ground his a$$ off and that's why he is the deserved winner! The tactics trainer was literally on showcase in the Final, especially in the last two games!
PATTERN recognition is about more than learning checkmates and tactical patterns. Through studying games, and learning from their own games, masters gather patterns that help them navigate various positions. Let's examine one ADVANCED pattern.

Pattern Recognition🧩operates uniquely for each individual. While everyone can grasp basic tactical patterns and checkmate patterns, as players advance to higher skill levels, some patterns become more abstract or may be interpreted differently by each player.

I was in the midst of writing an elaborate thread when it got accidentally lost. The jist of it is that I think this account: cheated against me. It started innocently...he played 5...Nf6 which isn't a bad move at all...it's just that he
So there you have it! A nice pawn endgame pattern. Remember the pawn structure and remember that the key is to be first on the other side! I hope you get this in your game and you will be ready for the breakthrough!

I was honestly gonna get more into why I thought other moves/decision were suspicious to me when I looked deeper at the account...and ladies and gentlemen 226-3-8 is the W-D-L ratio. Nothing abnormal here is there? My question to
@chesscom
is, HOW do these accounts get this far
Lets have a closer look at what's going on in this endgame after 39.b4! and lets first try 39...bxa4 when white replies 40.bxa5 (diagram). This one is quite obviously losing for black. White's king is safely in the square of the pawn without distraction while black's problem is

Garry took on d2, played 42...Rxd2!! after 43.Qxd2 Qf3+ 44.Qg2 Ng3!! after 45.hxg3 Kaspaorv achieved the perpetual and a draw was agreed. Black will check on h5-f3 and d1. Three checking squares and white can only interpose on two!
2/
For this reason, 39...axb4 looks like a better try as after 40.a5 (diagram) at least the black king will be able to contain the pawn by walking to a6. The next moves look quite forced 40...Kd6 (40...c5? 41.a6 Kc6 42.d5! wins) 41.Kc2 Kc7 42.Kb3 Kb7 43.Kxb4 Ka6 but what now?
3/
I relatively quickly found the continuation 1...Nxf3+! 2.gxf3 Re1+! this wins the game and this is a CHESS PATTERN that I have named "THE QUEEN SWEEP" 👑

I had this once against a fellow local FIDE master in blitz. White's last move was 23.Nb8? overlooking my cheeky threat. I always associate this pattern with the famous Karpov-Taimanov game.
@alexandrabotez
playing the French like a boss against IM Stephen Mannion. First 11...g5! as Moskalenko dubbed "The Black Jet" and then the cheeky 13...Qc7 threatening mean things to the Queen on a4! Possible IM scalp coming up!
#ReykjavikChess24
#Chess
Because of the position of the king and queen on the a- and b-file black has only one move after the check, namely 49...Ka4 but then we give a check 50.Qa8+ and then trade Queens! 50...Kb3 51.Qb7+ Kc2 52.Qxb1 white then beats black in the Pacman race on the kingside!

To summarize, in heavy-piece endgames, king safety is essential. The pattern we looked at "Anand's King" is one way to try to take strategic advantage of this feature of this type of endgame. Thx for reading! Search for Anand's King on YT for a video version of this pattern!

Came joint 1st with four players at the Árbæjarsafn Museum Blitz Chess Tournament. Didn't play my best but squeeze into the top pack by winning my last 3 games, including beating GM Kjartansson with black in the last round.
Finally we end on a strong player actually finding the win! In Norway Blitz in 2018, World Champion Ding Liren was up to the task against Levon Aronian. Aronian played 39...g5?? but Ding was ready with 40.g4! which should have won but things can happen in blitz. After 40...hxg4
Grandmaster Philipp Schlosser (2505) was struggling against his lower-rated opponent Tim Hagemann (2090). The GM set a trap 🪤 with his last move 36...Qf5!? which white fell for. He played 37.Bf6?? and had to succumb to the "Kasparov Perpetual" after 37...Qxh5+

It is white to move. Only one move wins, other moves lose. You could calculate it and find the answer but wouldn't it simply be better to be able to make such a move mostly on knowledge?
Here is the knowledge you need ( )

Sometimes patterns help but they can also hurt you! An IM with white played 30.Rxh6+ gxh6 31.Qxh6 Qh7 32.Rg8!! Rxg8 33.Qxf6+ and reached a neat Kasparov perpetual. However 30.Bg8!! winning would have been nicer!

But how did I know this pattern? Turns out I had made a video on this for
@chesscom
way back in 2009 (I know, I am old!). I was therefore quite proud that the knowledge stuck! But like I mentioned in the video the funny thing is that in practise, this win is more often than not
Like I said, this pattern is more often than not missed in practise. Here black had been defending against a higher rated opponent but J.Spalir (2361) with white blundered with 57.g4?? Fortunately for him, his lower rated opponent R.Perhining (2229) played 57...Kd6?? and white
I have several more examples of this pattern being missed. The most notable perhaps is Lu Shanglei (2605) against Nodirkbek Yakubboev (2667) in an important game at the World Team Championship in 2022. The Uzbek talent played 38...Ke5?? which is a losing blunder. Again,
It's black to move in this tricky position...choose carefully!! A: 1...Qxb4 or B: 1...Qd1+ I wish to reiterate the word tricky!

Here (diagram) white actually has two ways to continue. Usually we would play 44.Kc5! and the win is quite instructive. We also happen to have available the move 44.h3 here as 44...Kb7 45.d5 gives us a distant passer. In this pattern we don't always have an extra tempo on the
