No matter how many times you see it, it's stunning to look at total rubble just a block away from trees/homes that appear completely unharmed.

The effect of Brock Purdy on these NFL coverage maps gets me every time.
FOX's 3:25 window today: 49ers & Cardinals air on the West Coast and......two Iowa markets.

My mom’s view of their gravel road outside Ogden.
Boone County & others are pulling their plows today because of the low visibility/continuous drifting.
I-55 southbound out of the St. Louis metro this morning.
Everyone trying to get into the path of totality.

This is a friendly FYI that Winter Storm Warning criteria is 6"+ of snow in 12 hours or 8"+ in 24 hours.
It's been that way for awhile.
No one's using the phrase "winter storm" for hype.
A boundary passing though Iowa is providing convergence at the surface & low-level lapse rates are high, allowing air to rise quickly (left map).
Right map shows an increase in SPC's Non-supercell Tornado Parameter as a result.
Home NE of Ottumwa destroyed by the tornado earlier this afternoon.
Family told us the couple that lived here was sheltering in the shower. They’re now in the hospital in Ottumwa.
💧Overnight Rainfall:

Most spots seeing a whole month's worth of precip. in one night.
If you're planning to go anywhere Wednesday night thru Friday, it's probably time to reschedule or just stay home.
▶️Wind chills will be -20° to -40°
▶️Several inches of dry snow looks likely
▶️40+ mph gusts will make blizzard conditions possible

Temperature in Des Moines is steady at 59° as of 3 PM.
🌡️Already a record high for Dec. 29th (old record was 58°)
🔥A whopping 95° warmer than the wind chill exactly 7 days ago.
The SPC folks confirmed the line of storms this morning met the threshold of a derecho.
Good reminder that not all derechos are Aug. 2020 or Dec. 2021.
Not all derechos are the same - the definition is a windstorm that produces 58 mph winds, frequent gusts to 75 mph, and travels at least 400 miles. The storm system that moved through eastern Iowa Friday morning met that criteria, but a far cry from 8/10/2020 (THANKFULLY).

Solid incorporation of century-old design elements into a modern uniform.
Between this & the Jack Trice book I’m reading, already excited for this game.
Here's your blowing snow this afternoon.
This view comes from a plow on Hwy. 4 in Greene County north of Jefferson.
You can make out a sun dog in that clearing sky, but the road itself isn't easy to see.

Brock Purdy returns to Central Iowa airwaves today.
With all the usual NFC North teams in other timeslots, looks like FOX decided the 49ers would rate better in the Des Moines market than their main Dallas/Washington game.

Definitely more smoky haze over Des Moines today, but nothing like what's moving through eastern Iowa.
Air quality in Cedar Rapids is in the "very unhealthy" category. The 2nd picture is just wildfire smoke - no clouds.
Des Moines' hottest day yet this year, but we just missed the century mark.
Besides a few one-offs, most 100° days come with very dry ground & dry air.
We were mainly focused on the huge hail, but strong winds were apparently what blew this semi over on I-80 just east of Grinnell right before 5 PM.

Survey teams have identified EF4 damage in Greenfield and southern Adair county. Further refinement is possible in the days to come. We also will analyze damage downstream from a separate tornado.
NWS Des Moines expressed heartfelt condolences to those impacted.
