In the end, Carey proved a lot of us wrong. The Blue Devils won 15 straight games, all by double digits. No one, not even the defending state champion, could stop them.
It’s not a fairy tale or a magic season. It’s reality.
And for the people of Carey, it’s a glorious reality.
Congratulations to former New Riegel pitcher Michael Kirian, who has helped Louisville to the Division I World Series. He was on the mound for the clincher. From The A-T tab cover to Omaha. Great work.
I really think officials deserve some credit. Many of these men and women are working during a pandemic for little money. And their reward is to get yelled at by people every night. I think some perspective is needed. Without officials, there are no sports. Thank you.
After this week, I’ll be leaving The A-T to become sports editor of The Courier in Findlay.
@NyeMatt
will become sports editor in Tiffin. He’ll do a great job.
Kaia Woods has always been a special player. But tonight she gave her biggest performance when her team needed it the most. That's what great players do.
I never got the chance to meet Andrew, but his Twitter feed was essential for NW Ohio sportswriters wanting to know about L-B.
His work impressed all of us. It's so sad to see him gone so young.
Thoughts are with Andrew's family and the entire L-B community.
Sad news out of Liberty-Benton tonight as
@AndrewW2027
died today. Andrew was as passionate as they get about Liberty-Benton sports... and sports in general. I'm almost certain Andrew was going to take my job some day... and I was OK with that. Prayers to his family and friends.
Tiffin’s baseball team just beat Kentucky Wesleyan to claim its first conference tournament title in program history. The Dragons— who were the 7 seed in the G-MAC — will make their first regional appearance next week.
Undefeated. Champion. L-B beats Independence 25-18, 25-21, 25-17. 30-0. Second state title in three years. Congratulations to coach Todd and the Eagles.
Alli Adelsperger had a good weekend. She was inducted into the Old Fort Hall of Fame Friday, then scored 17 points and tied a program record with 10 steals as
@bergwbb
romped Muskingum 93-78 Saturday. It was the first double double of Adelsperger’s collegiate career
Cory Santoro converted a second quarter layup off a pass from her sister, Casey, to give the junior 1,000 career points. She’s the third Santoro sister to do it. Now at halftime, Bellevue leads Columbian 61-16.
Lauren Gerken scores point 1,877. That breaks the all-time Hancock County basketball scoring record, which was held by Cory-Rawson’s George Keller (1,876) who set it in 1955.
Tiffin is a football town. Chuck Heater, the Grudens, Adam Gase, Michael Preston, Nate Washington, Donteea Dye, Chris Ivory, the late Bill Groman all have connections to the city and/or the colleges.
NW Ohio.
Former players join former L-B coach Steve Williman at center court. The court was named for Williman tonight. Former Buckeye and Eagles star Aaron Craft among the attendees.
Phariz Watkins, a freshman playing in his first collegiate game, made 8 of 10 shots — including three 3s— and had 22 points in
@BergMensBBall
86-69 win over Trine.
The question I had when Calvert won its first state volleyball championship in 2018:
“Is this one special season, or is this the beginning of Calvert’s emergence as a state power?”
Senecas have answered the question. Emphatically.
Columbian’s Caden Blust (138) wrestling for a title at the D2 district in Norwalk. “Bruiser” Brody Conley (138) Kaeden Hatlay (160) and Joey Simcoe (182) also have qualified for state.
Abby Dryfuse reaches 1,000 career points on a three-point play with 5:37 left in half. Teammates stormed court after she reached mark. Columbian leads Clyde 19-10.

Congratulations to Calvert baseball coach Matt Coleman and Columbian baseball coach
@CurtMellott8
and their respective players and staffs. Two of the biggest wins in the history of Tiffin HS baseball today.
She did it. With that basket, Brianna Gillig has broke both New Riegel’s all time girls record (held by Rachel Faeth Fruth, 1,413 points) and all time basketball record (held by Paul Gnepper, 1,414 points). Both previous record holders were in attendance to congratulate Gillig.
One of the most incredible performances you will ever see here: H-L’s Sherron Jones wins 200 in 21.63. Also won 100, 400 and part of 8th place 4x2 team.
Everyone should take a minute to read this column on former Old Fort AD John Brueggemier, who died a few days ago. Pat Magers, a longtime friend of John’s, pats tribute.
I know Calvert’s volleyball players may be down tonight. But what those kids have done the last two years is fantastic. It’s exciting to cover a program this good, and I know the Calvert community is very proud.
If the A-T’s sports staff’s math is right—big gamble— Columbian’s Abby Dryfuse is 30 points from 1,000 after scoring 16 in today’s 54-45 win over Mansfield Senior. Three regular season games left for Tornadoes.
Calvert secures first regional appearance since 2005. That appearance was also at BGSU. But it was at Anderson Arena. Calvert plays Tuesday at the Stroh Center.
Really cool to see Columbian’s Kaeden Hatlay make state in his senior year. And I’m not just tweeting this because he kidded me during the football season for my horrible picking. I certainly deserved it. Feel good for him.
Here is what I propose: Instead of starting a 2020 season, let’s just finish the 1994 season. Every team starts with the record they finished with in 1994. Play the remaining 49 games on that schedule, then have the playoffs. Forget Arizona and Rays exist. Have 1994/2020 champ!
Really neat story on North Baltimore grad Levi Gazarek, who is playing baseball and football at BGSU.
@dylanfrazier44
has done some great work for us this fall.
Final: Tiffin 52, Findlay 45. That’s a title for the Dragons, and a likely trip to the Division II playoffs. Great moment for the program, 26 years in the making.
Lot of impressive statistics this weekend, but maybe the most impressive came from Cory-Rawson's Mike Bixler. He had a triple double 17 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds in a 53-50 loss to Waynesfield-Goshen.
One quick note about N10s: after results were announced, Upper Sandusky coach Graham Treadway led the clubhouse at Valleyview in a round of applause for Seneca East as the outright boys champions. I thought that showed a lot of class, and said a lot about Graham and his program.
The officiating didn’t cost
#Cavs
Game 2. But I will say a League has a responsibility to get the best officials for the biggest games. And if these are the best officials, then...oh, dear lord.
Feel good for
@BergBaseball
and my friend
@Fitz2421
. His first tournament title as head coach. Chad’s a good baseball man and is always great to talk to. Even if he is a Steelers fan.
Congratulations to Mohawk boys basketball coach Paul Dunn on making program history. Paul was a great offensive lineman for Heidelberg. Now he’s emerged as one of the area’s top basketball coaches.
Something I find interesting: Puka Nacua broke Bill Groman’s rookie receiving yard record. Groman went to Tiffin Columbian High School. One of Nacua’s teammates on the Rams is Russ Yeast, who played his freshman season at Tiffin Columbian High School.
Fundraiser by Heather Pooley : Joe Boyle Joe was a friend and inspiration to so many. If you are able, consider donating.
Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving.
The Tiffin Cross Country Carnival has been cancelled. Columbian plans to hold a smaller meet Sept. 12 (the original date of the Carnival) at Hedges-Boyer Park, and is sending out invitations today to surrounding conferences.
Liberty-Benton claims BVC team title, winning seven weight classes and outdistancing Van Buren, 314-221.
McComb’s Montana Pierce Wrestler of the Year, three time champ. L-B’s RJ Coldren four time champ.
Next up: sectionals.
This story is about Calvert baseball coach Matt Coleman. But it’s also about family, loyalty, appreciation and a baseball Jason Kipnis hit for a home run in the 2016 World Series.
Brett Montgomery got to walk through the halls of USHS with the fight song playing and his classmates cheering him on. State-bound golfer said its third time he’s done it. He’s earned it.
Jess Bowerman went over 1,000 career points in Seneca East’s win over USHS. I’m not sure what to say about her, except no matter the sport, she’ll do whatever is needed, whatever is possible, to help her team win. And she’s done things in her 3 years I didn’t know were possible.
Quick post about depression. I’ve struggled with it, dealt with it, am still dealing with it. So why am I tweeting about it? Not talking about it, avoiding it is usually not an answer. It’s not weak to ask for help. That’s all I got right now. All the best.
So, Tiffin University has four straight road games. I t wins the first one.
Coach gets sick and spends next week in hospital, misses a game.
TU wins.
Coach gets out of hospital, recovers enough to coach next two games from press box.
And TU wins both.
@CoachGGoff
’s team is 5-0.
I saw two
@OHSAASports
girls basketball district finals yesterday, and thought each was very well officiated.
Officials seem to only get feedback when they mess up.
Us sportswriters can relate.
Just wanted to let them know they did a really good job.
Andrew Branson of Columbian got his 100th career win, won the 126-pound weight class and was named Most Valuable Wrestler at the Gene Kimmet Memorial today, hosted by Calvert.
How about Columbian’s Chase Koerp-oration? The Frankhauser-Koerper duo combined for four touchdowns and more than 180 receiving yards last night. The government might move in and break it up for being too powerful. Tornadoes 5-0.
