Let’s get a few things straight; - I’m a criminal defence lawyer. Allegations of crimes need to be proven. Show me a real lawyer who says otherwise. - She signed a letter calling for a ceasefire. - The letter doesn’t “deny rape” - it says politicians shouldn’t parrot the IDF

In respect of the Globe article authored by former Justice Abella, my substantive criticisms are: - it asserts that a party lodging a complaint about a crime must be morally blameless - false. - it argues a historic victim can never be a future criminal - false. Contd

@SCC_eng @avilewis This is concerning b/ in its public judgements, the @SCC_eng has taken strides in recent years to denounce anti-black prejudice and, more broadly, point out the insidiousness of unconscious bias & systemic prejudice. So the question is: will it root those out of its own house?

@SCC_eng So: what we get is poor communication and nebulous, a quick statement that suggests value-laden decision making, resulting in… undermining public confidence in the institution and administration of justice. A poor outcome. Second: (contd)

This is an important piece by the Hon. Sheila Greckol, formerly of the Court of Appeal for Alberta. Her indignation and appropriate outrage at the University’s actions is palpable, and I hope more members of the legal community follow her lead.

No beheaded babies, & rape stories retracted. This would not be the first time a military power justified terrible actions on spurious grounds (remember the WMDs?) One reason why alleging crimes needs proof.

Colonialism has only ended one of three ways: - the physical and cultural genocide of the indigenous ppl (NA) - the expulsion of the colonizer (Algeria) - coexistence through something like Truth & Reconciliation (S Africa, Ireland) Which does this sound like?

Discomfort and hurt feelings do not rise to the level of compensable harm, such that a Court should restrict important rights on that basis. Mustafa v Culligan, 2008 SCC 27 Racists are "uncomfortable" with racialized ppl sitting near them on the bus - can't get an injunction.

This whole @UofT case seems to be totally lacking in substance. The encampment protests have caused some discomfort and possibly lightly hurt feelings. Does that justify infringing on fundamental democratic rights enshrined in the Charter and ICCPR?

In respect of the Globe article authored by former Justice Abella, my substantive criticisms are: - it asserts that a party lodging a complaint about a crime must be morally blameless - false. - it argues a historic victim can never be a future criminal - false. Contd

Why care about @CTV censoring the word "Palestine"? It’s not just about whether it’s on the map. Northrop Frye says a key function of language is to remind ppl of lost identity & give hope in a better future. Censorship of Palestine denies identity and aims to undermine hope.
