Grassroots member Dylan Lloyd was unanimously endorsed by Queer Collaborations for NUS Queer Officer: 'One of the saddest thing about this Union is that it is impossible for me... to win an office bearer position due to my factional affiliation'.

The NUS National Conference starts today, with student factions from Australian Universities gathering at Federation University, Victoria through this horrible Victorian weather. We are standing in the rain—a great start.

NUS NatCon day 2 started 20 minutes ago - but NLS (Labor Left) still won't come to the conference!
In better news, Woroni found the campus cafe and now we're SU (Labor Right)'s favourite media org ❤️

Woroni has left
#nusnatcon23
.
The final day of conference collapsed under the weight of deliberate and repeated ableist aggression from the SAlt delegation.
Their disrespectful behaviour has left attendees visibly traumatised.
Head to
@honi_soit
for further live coverage.
CW: Ableism
NatCon came to an end following SAlt's ablest conduct.
The final day also saw heartfelt and moving speeches from the Grassroots independents and we learnt Gen Sec. Sheldon Gait is not an accountant.
Read more from our reporters.
Breaking: There has been an isolated incident in the Fellows Oval area. Police are at the scene and have the situation under control, with an individual in custody.
The ANU is asking everyone to avoid Fellows Oval.
More information to come.
The students of this University have an obligation to stand in solidarity with staff: we must support our teachers, we must support the strikes.
Support the
@NTEUACT
and attend the rally at this Thursday at 1pm.
ANU staff have voted for industrial action after negotiations with the University yield little results.
This means staff will be joining other universities around the country already striking for changes to working conditions.
Alexander Lane reports
Woroni will be live-tweeting the ANU's town hall meeting where the University's Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) policy will be discussed.
The meeting starts at 3 p.m. While you're waiting check out this article from our news team!

got heated when a queer student conveyed the disappointment of queer collectives with the 2017 NUS Queer Officer. The Queer Officer misgendered the speaker and told them to get fucked.

So, we're on day three now. And because of the contested elections, we've been allowed out into the fresh air, and I've got my bingo done for all you sorry hungover dels.
#natcon22
Bingo for day 2. We're now three years late on our agenda, I can't remember what it feels like to not be logged in to Twitter and Zelda cries when she sees the sunlight.
Grace King moves for a 10 minute break. My co-reporter flees the room immediately. I fear he will never return and that I will die here at the
#ANUSASRC
. At least I will die doing what I love: live-tweeting.
ANUSA SRC 4 is tonight.

"They were manhunting individuals."
Woroni spoke to an ANU graduate who recounted the terrifying day that the Taliban overran Kabul. They are part of a group of alumni pleading to the Australian government to be granted humanitarian visas.
Conflict of Interest declaration: just accepted two sour patch kids from a Grindie Gen rep. i promise my receipt of this gift will not bias my future reporting.
Motion 5.4 passes.
Meeting shuts off at 11:04 PM.
Milli signals wellbeing and support options available at the ANU and ANUSA.
In all our years, we have never seen this much people attend an ANUSA meeting.
See you at the SRC next week <3
With the ACT Election coming up, Woroni sat down with Chief Minister of the ACT Andrew Barr to find out more about his experience at ANU, his connection to Malcolm Turnbull, his plans for the ACT and his favourite fruit.
We're done for tonight! With no sign of NLS returning, Sheldon Gait (NUS General Secretary) has advised the room to pack up and get out.
AND it sounds like NLS isn't even spilling their leadership.
An anticlimactic end to a messy day. Night night!
#nusnatcon23
NUS National Officer Bearers, State Branch Presidents and State Education Vice-Presidents have all been elected unopposed. Nominations for the General Executive (NX) have been received and accepted and will be balloted on tomorrow.

Skye (ANU Indie) seconds: "I am a proud trans woman. I live in fear...that I will join the hundreds of names listed in this motion."
“Transphobia must be fought at every event, every rally, every discussion”
Says SU will apologise but it will not be enough. The room applauds.

2 feeling thoroughly whelmed by it. On the agenda tonight is Officer's reports, a motion in support of PARSA's accessibility campaign, and two motions in support/solidarity of USYD activists and Deakin SAlt students.
Lets get this bread.

To SU: “I know you will stand with me, but you need to stand against your party as well”.
Motion passes unanimously
NLS wants Feminism to be more inclusive. SAlt thinks class matters more. NLS accuses SAlt of standing against Feminism. The rooms became loud.
SAlt abstains. Motion passes.

Welcome to our live tweeting of tonight's SRC - I have brought, in typical rat fashion, a little snack of cheese and biscuits to sustain me through this evening's stupol activity 🐀

And, in case my EIC asks why we attend. Here's some hard-hitting journalism

SU will press on with an unofficial NatCon -
#fakecon23
is here!
They're hoping SAlt will rejoin them if they bring the deferred Palestine motions back to conference today.
No quorum - NLS is still boycotting over the LTSU motion - so motions won't be binding

We're still here for Day 4 of
#nusnatcon23
!
Attendees have voted on the incoming general executive members. They locked media out - surprise surprise...
While we wait for debate to resume, check out our coverage of

and the incoming exec list:
A
#nusnatcon
motion (11.3) to condemn anti-semitism has carried with NLS and Unity support, with SAlt abstentions causing cries of shame from the floor.
#woroniatnus
NLS has yet to appear so the conference is still delayed. Unity and Independent sources allege that NLS has spilled their leadership positions and is mid-ballot. More to come…

Welf. Officer says they will "stand on the shoulders of the giants before me." a reference to the past Welf. Officer's height.
Also speaks of how they will advocate for int'l students, and neurodivergent students.

Hundreds turned out to Parliament House yesterday to protest the speaking tour of transphobe Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull.
Amidst controversies around Nazis and Lidia Thorpe’s treatment, a diverse crowd of Canberrans came to support trans people.
Madeleine Lezon is speaking against the motion. She believes the motion isn't actionable and that the text of the motion does not reflect intent. She believes it also doesn't consider student safety while protesting.

Q, Skye: Why did you vote against ending gifts (uses the example of gen sec Sheldon Gait going to Israel)?
A: "I will never personally defend Sheldon Gait".

Yeh its hard to, I personally watched him attempt to snatch a mic and then slip on the ground.
The ANU faced significant financial hardship last year. In response to this, the ANU is proposing cuts to the campus libraries, including opening hours and staffing levels.

SAlt takes stand but instead shouts about Palestine. SU and NLS give thumbs downs. SAlt heckles and chant "from the river," despite chair's best efforts.
SAlt single-issue approach was justifiable for motions about sausages but shouting matches in this chapter are just pathetic.
The debate at
#nusnatcon
over marriage equality and SAlt's role within it has come to a head. One independent speaker accused SAlt of historical revisionism - to a standing ovation.
