Official WCC Highways news. Please report issues via website link or if urgent call 01905 765765. We're not able to respond to all enquiries via this account
Here's a screenshot of Worcester Bridge right now from our traffic cameras - it appears that many of you are following the Government advice to not travel unless essential - thank you
#StayHomeSaveLives
We would like to take a moment to reply to all of the people that have thanked us for our road closure updates over the last few days - we've been overwhelmed with the kind words 😀
It's been extremely busy so we have not had chance every time to reply individually
Due to the rising cost of fuel, we’ve made the decision to trial some equine-friendly parking spaces in Worcester
Located at the Hive, the new spaces will be operational in the next week & if successful, may be extended throughout the county

@myworcester

Wow! We've passed 20K followers!
Not every Local Authority has a dedicated Highways & Travel account - we're pleased that so many people follow us for news, especially during flood events
Thank you to all that have interacted with this account, we hope that we've been helpful
Highways teams from
@Ringway_Worcs
managing the contraflow in Worcester City centre were quick to react when a low-flying swan collided with a traffic sign today
Steve Goodall soon rescued the swan & is keeping it safe & warm until teams from the local swan sanctuary arrive 👏👏
❄️❄️ Snow ❄️❄️
Our gritters were out last night across
#Worcestershire
& with this morning's snow we're now out gritting again with snow ploughs fitted
If you have to drive, please drive to conditions - slow down & increase distances - take care on the roads
Our highways contractor
@Ringway_Worcs
have been superb this week whilst dealing with flooding & associated road problems
What an effort overnight in Worcester: repairing damage, unblocking drains, cleaning roads & footways and getting routes back open
Fantastic job team 👋👋👋
We're aware of a set of temporary traffic lights that have appeared on A4133 by Holt Fleet bridge for works by BT - our engineer is en route to get them removed ASAP
We're grateful & proud for the fantastic efforts of every key worker not only in
#Worcestershire
but in the whole country - you are the real heroes!
Thank you all 👏👏👏👏👏👏
#clapforkeyworkers
Here's an aerial picture of Upton Marina & the A4104 yesterday - our road raising scheme kept Upton Bridge & this link from the town to the A38 open except for a few hours yesterday evening.
Without the scheme this road would now be closed
#Open4Business
We would like to thank all
#WorcestershireHour
friends who have shared our
#GritterTwitter
travel messages, weather forecasts, gritting/snowploughing updates & driving advice over the last few days - you've helped our news reach a much wider audience & we are very grateful 👍
Worcester city update 10pm 25/02:
We are expecting to have to fully close New Road and the city centre bridge to vehicular traffic at some time overnight
Please prepare to make alternative travel plans for tomorrow
We will update this feed as soon as more details are known
We would like to clarify that if any individual clears a public highway of snow or ice in
#Worcestershire
that they are not at risk of liability or claim for injury - we appreciate your help & welcome your efforts - there is a myth that you may be sued - this is 100% false
Worcester city update 7am 26/02:
Worcester bridge currently open to all traffic.
Water is now starting to come onto New Road.
We will keep the road & bridge open as long as possible & advise when closing (please don't ask a time, we will update)
A449 Powick, A38 & A4133 open
During the recent floods, staff at
@premierinn
Worcester couldn't have been more helpful to
@worcscc
&
@Ringway_Worcs
staff, providing hot drinks & toilet facilities 24 hours a day during all of the contraflow & closure works
Today, Jon Fraser popped in to thank manager Jo Brace
Good morning
#Worcestershire
- we've been battling the weather all night, snow stopped around 4/5am & our primary routes are all open - we're now switching attention to more secondary roads - please take care today

May we introduce the Gottwald AK 680-3 1200t crane which next week (weather permitting) will start to lift several steel girders into place across the River Severn to form the new Carrington Bridge
✅ 🚗 🚲 🚶♀️ A4440 open
❌ 🛥️ Severn closed to river traffic at lift times
Damage in
#Worcester
High Street caused by careless reversing of a delivery vehicle - we have the registration from CCTV & will be recharging replacement costs
Steel bridge girders for the new Carrington Bridge are arriving on site at
#Worcester
Southern Link Road
Measuring 42m in length & weighing 72 Tonnes, the girders are being delivered by
@CollettLtd
on their specialist modular drawbar 6-row double bogie trailers
🚶♀️ 🚴♀️ We’re proposing a scheme to build a new walking/cycling bridge across the Severn in
#Worcester
from Gheluvelt Park to the Kepax site in St Johns
Ahead of the planning process, we’re asking you to let us know what you think:
#WorcestershireHour
We can confirm that the pre-9:30am restriction for National Concessionary Passes in
#Worcestershire
will be removed with immediate effect
Anyone holding a pass will be able to travel free on all public bus services before 9:30am until further notice
⚠️ Copenhagen Street, Worcester is closed to vehicles for a 3 month trial to facilitate street trading by
@TripelbC
, Oil Basin Brewery & Keystones
The road is open to pedestrians at all times & may be reopened for emergency access if required
Here's another way we keep an eye on river levels in Worcester - this seat on the riverside path has been completely submerged over the last few days - a literal 'benchmark'. As levels fall, we're preparing to get roads back to normal overnight in the city centre
We're aware of a set of temporary traffic lights that have appeared on A4133 by Holt Fleet bridge for works by BT - our engineer is en route to get them removed ASAP
Our gritters are not stopping tonight - we've ploughed, gritted & will re-grit all primary & secondary routes - we're hoping snowfall clears after midnight, please no travel unless essential, our teams are being hindered by struggling vehicles
#GritterTwitter
#WorcestershireHour
On A38 at Bromsgrove yesterday, several vehicles ignored road closed signs & drove through flood water - they damaged their vehicles on this unseen manhole - DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATER - you do not know what is underneath!

#WorcestershireHour
Lots of water around Powick Roundabout but the A449 is still open: we're running two-way traffic on the eastern side with long delays from Malvern

We're happy to confirm Amanda has been found safe and well and her family has been informed.
We'd like to say a huge thank you to the community of Droitwich and everyone who shared our appeal.
There was huge support from people during this search and we're extremely grateful.
Worcester roads are back open this morning 👍
We're sorry about congestion the last few days but here's an aerial photo by Phil Harrison Photography showing how New Road stayed open due to our road raising scheme, allowing us to run a contraflow system keeping the bridge open
Worcester city 7am 1/3:
➡️ New Road running one-way to St John's
⛔️ Hylton Road - use diversion via Henwick Road
✅ Tybridge Street
✅ North Parade
✅ Croft Road
✅ Dolday
✅ The Butts
✅ All Saints Road
✅ Sabrina bridge
⚠️ Diglis bridge needs cleansing
✅ Carrington bridge
Pump Street
#Worcester
looking good after the recent refurbishment - new surfacing & paving, new street furniture & trees
Thanks to all the shops & businesses for working with us during this scheme 😀
#GritterTwitter
:
We're currently out gritting across
#Worcestershire
- we'll then be returning to our depots to fit snow ploughs ready for action if required - there is a potential band of snow moving through the county later tonight ❄️
Please take care on the roads
#WorcestershireHour
- our winter season is now officially over so no more
#GritterTwitter
until October - we'll still tweet highways & travel info so please keep in touch but we'd like to say a massive thanks to these guys - just a few of the team that kept us safe this winter
⚠️ HIGHWAYS UPDATE ⚠️
Worcester bridge closure at midnight
Worcester bridge & New Road will be fully closed in both directions at midnight until 4am on Sunday for removal of contraflow system & reinstatement of the usual road layout
Whilst we're down at New Road, Worcester closely monitoring flooding & the contraflow system, we'd like to thank
@WorcsCCC
for allowing use the use of their facilities - we can clearly see that they have problems of their own!
The reason Sabrina footbridge also remains closed today - water still too high & fast on Pitchcroft side - use main Worcester bridge for pedestrian access across the river
⚠️ ALERT ⚠️
⛔️ Worcester main bridge is closing both ways to vehicles at 2pm
Use Holt Fleet bridge (north) or Carrington bridge (south)
🚌 Free pedestrian shuttle buses will run from 2pm - 11pm
Get on at Bull Ring roundabout (St Johns) & on Worcester bridge by Premier Inn
#GritterTwitter
: Our gritters fitted with snowploughs have been working around the clock across Worcs & will continue tonight
It's down to -6°C later so we advise only essential travel - if you are out, please take extreme care on the roads; think about your speed & space
*UPDATE* New Road &
#Worcester
city river bridge is now closed in both directions due to rising flood waters - Carrington bridge is accessible towards the Ketch only from Worcester city centre - Holt Fleet bridge is open
@worcscc
@myworcester
#WorcestershireHour
⚠️ Sabrina bridge will reopen at 12 noon tomorrow
Access via ramps only - further works are still underway to reinstate the site, temporary traffic lights on Hylton Road will remain in place for approximately 2 more weeks
This video, posted by
@ladiesgocycling
shows some very poor judgement
'Road Closed' means what it says - there may be hazards beneath the water such as open drains or manholes & the bow wave caused does not help adjacent properties
Please DO NOT drive through flood water!
Today is the official end of our 2019/20 winter season - gritters are put away & officers stood down
Many thanks to
@worcscc
&
@Ringway_Worcs
staff for maintaining service at these times
We gritted 38 times in total, 23/3 was the last time
#GritterTwitter
#WorcestershrieHour
Our snowploughs & gritters have been working all day and we'll continue gritting around the clock tonight - but - we want to warn you about very low road temps & widespread icy patches on untreated surfaces - Monday's journey will be not be easy, please take care
#GritterTwitter
We have additional staff on standby today, including drainage crews & specialist tree contractors - if you are aware of a fallen tree/flash flood or other highways problem you can report it to us on this account

⚠️ Gritters are just heading out onto

roads for the first time this winter - here's one being loaded at our depot near

Please take care on the roads tonight & tomorrow

Worcester city update 6am 26/02:
✅ Worcester city bridge currently remains fully open in both directions to vehicles & pedestrians
✅ A449 Powick, A4103 Bransford & A38 also clear
River levels are still rising upstream so situation is being closely monitored
Next update: 7am
⚠️ If you park your vehicle on a gritting route may we remind you to park considerately - here's a picture from a route in Worcester when our plough couldn't get through
Also last night we were unable to complete a gritting route in Redditch due to poor parking
Thank you 👍
Excellent work by
@Ringway_Worcs
removing flood debris from Tenbury bridge yesterday, reopening the bridge almost 4 hours ahead of schedule - what a difference a day makes!
Worcester update 9am 26/02:
✅ Main bridge still fully open
💧 Water increasingly moving onto New Road
👍 We will keep open whilst safe to do so
🚌 After closure, free pedestrian shuttle buses will run all day between Bridge Street & Bull Ring roundabout (last bus time tbc)
😀 Sabrina bridge will open at 12 noon today
Replacement of the steel for the bridge span, repainted handrails, ramps, stairs & main mast, increased handrail height & a new composite deck which offers a smoother ride for cyclists 👍
Works ongoing to tidy the site
All gritters in
#Worcestershire
are spreading a saline solution (brine) rather than dry salt - this goes to work de-icing faster & also sticks to the road surface - it is however not always visible that roads have been treated - rest assured we're out there!
