Ramadan this year falls between April 23 and May 23, which means it may very well coincide with your final exam.
Now that you know the dates, how do you plan to help your students who may be fasting? I will offer an alternative time to students so that they can eat before.
Attractive students (both male & female) receive higher grades in non-quantitative subjects, which tend to have more teacher-student interaction.
Moving online decreased the advantage for attractive female students, but not attractive male students.

The IOC commissioned a study claiming the Paris 2024 Olympics will bring billions in economic benefits. But is it just hype?
My latest piece explores the unseen economic effects that undermine these claims:
I occasionally get mail at my office address, but NEVER like what I received today.
I had a handwritten 3-page letter from an incarcerated man in Oregon who is learning economics through a mail-based program and wanted to ask me (of all people) questions about economics ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Robert (Bob) Solow was a towering figure in the field of economics and will be remembered for his profound contributions to the discipline.
Here are 2 of his most significant contributions:
If you play the Penn State alma mater at exactly 11:58:57pm on New Yearโs Eve, youโll be able to yell โMAY NO ACT OF OURS BRING SHAMEโ right at midnight. Start 2018 the right way.
It's been a hectic couple of months, but it's (finally) time for some happy news!
I'm moving to Blacksburg, Virginia in July!
I'll join the faculty in the Virginia Tech Department of Economics and serve as their Undergraduate Director starting this Fall.
Being an academic economist has been frustrating at times, but it finally took this weekend's Annual Meeting of the American Economic Association for me to articulate some of those frustrations.
Follow along for my frustrations... ๐งต
I love reading, especially books on economics and econ-adjacent fields.
Each book I read gives me some new insight or random anecdote I didn't know before.
Here are my favorite economics books that were published this year:
The most discouraging way to start a class has to be walking into the room and hearing students talk about how much they hate you and the class you're about to teach.
0/10 do not recommend.
It's hard to believe that my newsletter has already been around for almost 2 years! When I started it back in 2020, I had no idea how far it would go or how much it would grow.
But here I am, reflecting on an incredible year of growth and success.
Follow along for the ride...
What an emotional whirlwind today. My department chair just stopped by to deliver my promotion announcement. I'm now officially an Associate Teaching Professor of Economics.
Before you get too distracted with your Labor Day weekend plans, make sure you're signed up for my newsletter.
Monday's post will make my Millennial and Gen X subscribers happy! ๐โป๏ธ
Giddy up:
Hi incoming grad students! Please know that this isn't the representative view of the profession.
Keep posting your accomplishments & don't stop being proud of your hard work. We need more of that positivity on this website!
My first-year graduate macro professor wrote the max/mean/min for the first exam on the board, and the lowest score was a 9 out of 50.
I turned to my friend, laughed, and said "what idiot only got 9 out of 50?"
I was the idiot.
Flex your lowest academic low score.
To remind us that almost everyone fails at some point in life but it isn't the end of the road. Just a memory in the end.
Mine was 27/100 in Engineering Math 2, just a year after I'd scored 99 in 12th boards. Much needed kick in my butt.
Bonus content: here's the scene from The G Word with Adam Conover that summarizes bank runs and the role of the FDIC.

Now seems as good of a time as any to announce that I recently signed a contract to write a book on Economics and
#ParksAndRec
. Hopefully, I'll be able to add "author" to my bio starting in 2021. ๐ฌ
My students who have self-selected into the remote option of my course are currently averaging about 15 percentage points less than all other students averaged tother.
I get the benefits of a remote option, but I don't think many students realize the costs.
Don't worry, David. Students in my undergrad labor econ class struggled with this concept as well.
Understanding how requires you actually know how this data is calculated. That's something you learn in principles of macro though.
The same government agency that reported the 339,000 increase in jobs also reported an increase in the unemployment rate from 3.4 to 3.7%.
How can the number of jobs increase at the same time that the unemployment rate increases?
It was not a change in the labor force
I have been anxiously waiting to share the book cover with everyone. Here it is! It feels like a nice inside joke with other people who love Parks & Rec.
I think it's finally time that I explain why I choose to publish my work in lower-ranked journals instead of at the top journals in my field.
My research isn't good enough for top journals.
I have spent the past 2 weeks stressed about preparing for the upcoming semster, but I refuse to let work take over my weekends and free time any more.
I'm not going to wreck my mental health for an organization that couldn't care less about me.
I'm incredibly honored to receive the award for Outstanding Faculty in a Principles Course. I'm passionate about teaching, and being recognized for it is truly special to me.
Thank you to my students for your curiosity and engagement, but also to my supportive colleagues.
For all the students hoping their university switches to virtual classrooms, imagine the professor you watch struggling with PowerPoint now trying to record their lectures in Zoom.
I'm teaching my first sports economics class in nearly 10 years, and I've spent the past week catching up with my favorite book by
@KuperSimon
and
@sszy

Four of his PhD students have also received Nobel Prizes in Economic Sciences:

โก๏ธ Joseph Stiglitz

He considered them his "pride and joy."
Here's a small sampling of just how easy it is to teach economics using Parks and Rec. There are 14 sections in the book, and I have a ๐งต with my favorite scene for each chapter...
For new faculty out there, don't assume the rest of us ever figure it out. You can't please everyone all the time.
I see so many faculty burn out trying to constantly serve every student in the hopes that no one hates them or complains. It's not worth the mental toll.
I'm 6 weeks into a pledge to not work after hours and on weekends. My general anxiety level has fallen tremendously and I've been sleeping much better each week.
This is one of the best decisions I've made physically, professionally, and most importantly, emotionally.
I have found a great professional use for ChatGPT!
I usually avoid reading open-ended comments on my course evaluations. I'm sensitive to negative feedback and it's hard to identify common themes across 100s of responses.
Thankfully, ChatGPT can summarize them quickly... ๐งต
In a recent field experiment, researchers find that only female teachers respond to critical student evaluations.
Male teachers are generally unresponsive unless the evaluations are better than their self-evaluation.
A former student approached me today at Trader Joe's to say hi and tell me I made a big impact on them.
I needed that so much more that I realized. It's too easy to forget all the good parts about teaching.
I sent emails congratulating students for improving their exam scores by a certain percent.
I'm now getting follow-up emails asking why their scores are lower than my email said because they don't know the difference between percents and percentage points.
For some background, he was the solo winner of the Nobel Prize in 1987 for "for his contributions to the theory of economic growth."
Every student who takes a macroeconomics course learns about the Solow growth model.
Today I was fortunate to share Alan Krueger's work with my students and to talk with them about suicidal thoughts.
If you are experiencing suicidal or self-harm thoughts, please call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or chat online.
Talk about a whirlwind of emotions following a paper rejection!
The journal uses a single-blind system, and this comment was left in a reviewer's summary of our paper.
We spent hours watching
@MrBeast
videos & writing lesson plans for your economics classroom!
I am excited to present a working paper, co-authored with
@WayneGeerling
and
@DirkMateer
, that explores the use of three of MrBeast's most well-known.

At least he adds labor in the cost but then ignores the building he's sitting in, the electricity to run the place, and the insurance to cover it all.
Videos like this remind me how important it is for students to take a basic economics course.
