An account that posted Windows aesthetics, from old to new. Desktops, wallpapers, retrospectives, graphics, and more obscurities. (posts updates infrequently)
It's been a long run, but this Twitter account is now retired. I loved sharing obscure/interesting Windows content, but I've moved on to other projects and don't plan to post much from here.
Thanks for enjoying and sharing my posts!
After 2.5 years of development, the Ultimate Windows Wallpaper Pack is out! An early Xmas present. This includes thousands of wallpapers, sample pictures, user account pictures and other backgrounds.
Download links in the replies.
I've updated the HD Windows wallpaper/user account picture packs! Added some new finds, such as the HD version of Autumn, Windows Phone 7.x-8.0 wallpapers and more goodies.
Links are in the following replies.
Windows Media Player 10 was released in late 2004. It features a glossy aesthetic that channels the design ideas found in Longhorn and later Windows Vista, making this one of the first released products with the "Frutiger Aero" aesthetic (as well as Media Center 2005)
Welcome to Windows Aesthetics! This is an account that posts Windows-related desktops, wallpapers, retrospectives, and more obscurities. If this is up your street, be sure to click that follow button!
A selection of downloadable widescreen Windows XP Media Center Edition wallpapers from 2004. Unfortunately they were at 480x270,, which is low even for the time.
Added them to the UWWP - now at v1.11.
I have finally bought Autumn in full res! Here's a 1920x1200 version.
Now that leaves Purple flower, Home and the design wallpapers left without HD versions.
So as it turns out, the Windows XP frog image appears in a Russian news article from 2001. Unlike duck or car, this doesn't seem to be cutout of a background. It seems that Microsoft cut the frog out of the background themselves.
As it turns out, the wallpaper in the downloadable Royale theme was actually used by Microsoft New Zealand without permission. It originates from DeviantArt - "Grassy" (2003) by judge, which itself is an edit of "Where Are You Going" (2002) by americanpsycho.
I won't get into too much detail, but I've not really been active in the Windows scene nowadays. I may still update Ultimate Windows Wallpaper Pack and the wiki from time to time though, but not at a fast pace.
This account will remain intact as a "museum" of sorts.
Version 1.2 of the Ultimate Windows Wallpaper Pack is out!
I have added template backgrounds from PowerPoint 2003 and 2016, as well as the PixelSense 2.0 wallpapers. Here's some examples.
Rest in peace to talented composer, Stan LePard. Your music for Windows XP's OOBE is a timeless classic and as such is fondly remembered by lots of people. Your other contributions to Microsoft, such as Windows 98's shutdown sound, Encarta and Office music, are also amazing.
This tweet may only have one Windows screenshot, but I love the Frutiger Aero aesthetic. The skeuomorphism and gloss are designed well, without looking cheap. It feels very humanist and elegant, so no wonder it is well loved to this day.
The recovery image for Microsoft PixelSense 2.0, the interface for the Samsung SUR40 surface table, has been dumped! It has a rather interesting look to it.
Download is in the reply.
I've dumped the Corbis Images Creative Freedom 3 CD! Like the previous two Creative Freedom CDs, this is a sampler of 10K low res images, some of which became Windows XP wallpapers. This has also led to a revelation regarding a certain iconic wallpaper...
Lost media time: in 2008, Microsoft released the file synchronization service Windows Live Mesh. They also produced a promotional wallpaper pack of Mesh-themed wallpapers, which is lost and is unavailable on the Internet Archive.
If you have these, please get in touch!
Still saddens me we'll probably never get high/full res versions of these Windows XP user account pictures - all of these seem to have been taken down from stock photo sites.
Happy New Year 2022! Anyways, I have finally started a fundraiser to buy the full res version of Windows XP's Autumn wallpaper from Photononstop and preserve it. If you're interested, feel free to chime in! Every little helps.
I'm also semi-active on
@techprodbangers
! We have been doing a lot of research and preservation work for ringtones, similar to what had been done for Windows wallpapers. Might be up your alley too.
Back for 5 seconds. Here are some Windows XP screensaver concepts by REZN8! This design studio created the XP flag screensaver, as well as the logo wallpaper. Thanks to program manager Gregory Raiz for sharing these.
Just learned this album is a thing. It's called Microsoft TechNet MSN Chillout and was published by The Music Marketeers. Hope I can find the music on it someday, as it is currently lost.
