I love sparring with legislators, and this exchange is no different.
Rep. Parkinson missed the mark by disregarding my story, insinuating I’m being used, and reducing my experience and involvement to the color of my skin.
This is what I experienced firsthand: I struggled and
🚨This is why school choice matters🚨
I love sharing my story but I often wonder how many more “Walters” are out there desperate for change.
There’s a lot of noise in this space but I am honored to fight for students across the entire country✊🏾
#schoolchoiceNOW
1.0 GPA but we want them to teach kids about race?🤔
Why in the world would you trust the teachers' union to teach anything well? Hard to find a more racist institution than the unions that protect a system where 41% of high school students have a 1.0 GPA or less.
A white, teachers-union backed politician says “Black Lives Matter.” Yet when Black students like me testified about wanting
#SchoolChoice
instead of failing schools, he couldn’t care less.
CC:
@SenMcCollister
This isn’t just about masks or about Governor DeSantis’ political aspirations. It’s about the complete destabilization of public education so that parents will choose private schools.
The public school I left almost 13 years ago is still performing poorly... They told my mom they had a 5-year plan that would turn the school around🙄 This is absolutely unacceptable!!!!
Parents and students need options NOW!!!

Senator Wayne: “Did you say it would take about 50 years to fix Omaha?”
Senator Hansen: “Yes.”
Senator Wayne: “So Omaha won’t be fixed for 50 years. So what are we going to tell parents in the meantime when they are looking for choice?”
Senator Hansen: *silence “I mean.. idk”
We are witnessing a national reckoning. Lawmakers are finally listening to the millions of parents who want choices for their children. We won’t stop fighting for kids until every child has great options.
#SchoolChoiceWave
Traditional public schools are great for those who want it. Can we please stop with the narrative that traditional public schools are great for every student in America?
The fight for school choice is for families who aren't happy with where they are.
@DeAngelisCorey
I was bullied and in a terrible school. Thanks to the EdChoice scholarship I graduated high school and then graduated college. After graduating, I found myself at the White House sitting next to the POTUS to discuss the power of school choice! I haven’t looked back since😎
While we are on the topic of percentages, I would like to throw out a few:
15% of Black 8th graders are proficient in reading
13% are proficient in math
9% are proficient in civics
I suspect majority of that 90% would NOT choose public school if they had the choice🤔
We should be investing in public schools that 90% of students attend, not funneling resources into vouchers. So we filed an amicus brief with
@elcinfo
,
@splcenter
,
@NAACPKYSU
, & Pastors for KY Children challenging the tuition tax credit/voucher program.
What we are fighting for goes beyond party lines and power dynamics.
School choice saved my life and can do the same for so many students.
Let’s put political differences aside and truly do what’s best for children!
#schoolchoicenow
.
@ChozenOne14
says he'll never forget the words his mom said to his principal when she wanted to put him in a better school. Neither will we.
Send this to every politician who claims to support underserved minority communities but opposes
#schoolchoice
.
I’m the witness you are talking about (incorrectly I may add).
1. I don’t work for Americans for Prosperity.
2. The private school I attended CONSISTENTLY out performs the public schools in the area.
3. You don’t even know what public or private school I attended. It wasn’t
The Americans for Prosperity “witness” story falls apart as we find the school that supposedly “saved” him had poorer outcomes than the public school he attended.🙄 This was never about improved outcomes. Vouchers NEVER improve outcomes.
#VoucherScam
So glad to be on the side of parents and families. A lot of people throw around convoluted words to misrepresent our mission.
School choice saved my life. I was stuck in a school with no way out.
How many more students must we sacrifice to a system that has failed so many?
Nothing like seeing
@DeAngelisCorey
in the trenches and fighting for children across the country. Well done Corey! You could probably hear me screaming all the way from Ohio😂
The unions want to protect a system that props up generational poverty by withholding educational equality. The teachers' unions are uniformly, historically, and consistently bad for kids, and particularly bad for Black kids.
@citizenstewart
Asking a child to stay in a failing school, while you fix the system is like the fire department asking you to stay in the building while they put out the fire.
Senator Wayne: “Did you say it would take about 50 years to fix Omaha?”
Senator Hansen: “Yes.”
Senator Wayne: “So Omaha won’t be fixed for 50 years. So what are we going to tell parents in the meantime when they are looking for choice?”
Senator Hansen: *silence “I mean.. idk”
Sat next to a lady on the plane back home. I can tell she’s staring at me so I said hello. She gave me a dirty look and asked me “Are you Walter Blanks?” I say yes and she scoffs and moves to a different seat. Turns out she’s a member of NEA!! Clearly I’m doing my job very well🤣
Let’s be clear: If you have the financial means, you have a choice for where to send your kid to school.
#SchoolChoice
as a policy allows lower-income and working class families the opportunity to finally choose the best school for their own child.
The overwhelming majority of students using
#SchoolChoice
programs like vouchers are lower-income students of color.
Will you tell them
#YouAintBlack
?
When we divert public funds to private schools, we undermine the entire public education system. We've got to prioritize investing in our public schools, so every kid in America gets a fair shot. That's why I oppose vouchers.

“This election” is about parents rising up and demanding what’s best for their kids.

Former President
@BarackObama
: "We don't have time to be wasted on these phony trumped-up culture wars, this fake outrage, the right-wing media's pedals to juice their ratings."
Let’s be clear... we aren’t coming after your public schools. But if it isn’t working, a parent (regardless of income or skin color) should be able to exercise choice. I’m tired of this notion that politicians know better than parents.. 1/2
Nothing screams tone-deaf and privilege more than telling desperate parents to "have a bake sale" in order to send their child to a better school. News flash: Most of these parents are working multiple jobs JUST to keep the lights on and food on the table... unbelievable!
@janekleeb
If conservatives want their kids to attend corporate/private schools, they need to fund it themselves without a government handout. Get a second job. Have a bake sale. Like they do for public schools.
@janthony123456
I sure did. It made the difference for me. My story speaks to the importance of putting children in enviroments that work best for them. What worked for me wont work for some.
School choice can allow parents to make that decision for their own child:) Thank you for the kind word
Make no mistake -
#SchoolChoice
was on the ballot tonight in legislative races across the state of Iowa and voters overwhelmingly expressed their support.

You clearly aren't paying attention if you think public schools are "the great equalizer". Maybe you should add "If you can afford to live in an affluent district" to the end of that....
No tax dollars should go to private or charter schools. It’s your choice to send your kids to those schools. They have a lot of wealthy donors who keep those schools open. Any funds you have at the federal or state level need to go into public schools—the great equalizer.
Safe & welcoming public schools are how we help all kids recover & thrive. That's why we worked so hard to re-open schools 4 in person learning & are fighting 4 the safeguards necessary to keep them open safely & the conditions educators & students need

This is interesting:
@VoteGloriaJ
has Black Lives Matter in her bio.
But when a Black life comes to speak on his experience, she can’t even call him by his name. I guess she’s only concerned with the Black lives that agree with her🤷🏾♂️
Btw… you’re still 1 for 3 on the “facts”
.
@GovBillLee
last night after his victory:
“Those two ideas (public/private schools) are not in conflict with each other. We can fund public schools and provide alternative opportunities for children at the same time; IF we are committed to funding students and not systems”
How does the "system" serve the public good when 9% of 8th-grade Black students performed at or above the NAEP proficient level in civics, 13% in math, and 15% in reading?
Is that the system you are referring to?
And, to reiterate, the reason we fund (or should) systems that are accessible to and serve children, and are publicly governed, is to serve that public good (not private interest) of an informed citizenry, preserving collective, democratic interests!
#fundsystemsthatservechildren
.
@KennedyNation
gets it! School choice is about empowering families to be in control, not some distant bureaucrat who wouldn’t dare to step foot in a low performing school!
#schoolchoicenow
Private Islamic schools and Jewish schools should open up all over Maine. The state has to fund you now so take advantage of it. Move your communities there as well. Let's see what the Supreme Court says...
Imagine thinking that preventing minority children from choosing a better school is “the right thing to do.”
How tone-deaf and out of touch can you really be,
@NebraskaMegan
?
Extremely disheartening to see; nothing to be proud of.
Thank you to my colleagues who stood together against allowing taxpayer money to go to discriminatory religious educational institutions. This was the right thing to do.
#NELeg
You are all probably right… I shouldn’t have said millions.. I should have just said DeSantis was wrong to do this.. Fauci is an amazing public servant. He shoudn’t be mocked. But I shouldn’t engage in that kind of hyperbole either. My bad…

for this. They’re right: This is a non-story. We, like other outside groups, spoke with the CDC about legitimate safety concerns. But rather than focusing on those safety concerns, right-wing media chose once again to demonize educators.

I’m not sure what reality
@rweingarten
is living in but there’s no way she actually thinks people are believing this nonsense.
Randi has overplayed her hand and is trying to backtrack. This is insane!
Families have been paying attention and we have the receipts!
Thankfully after two years of disruption from a pandemic that killed more than 1 mil Americans, schools are already working on helping kids recover and thrive. This is a year to accelerate learning by rebuilding relationships, focusing on the basics

Why do I believe the wave of education choice is inevitable?
Because there is a cohort of young, hungry professionals who know firsthand the profound impact of a chosen education.
And they won’t stop until every kid has access.
For far too long parents have been left with broken promises and empty platitudes.
School choice is here and with parents like this speaking up, it’s here to stay!
Breaking News: Randi Weingarten, president of America’s second-largest teachers’ union, plans to call for a full reopening of schools for the next academic year.
It’s extremely condescending when people think school choice isn’t good for other people and then they give a long list of reasons.
People pick different schools for different reasons.
That’s the beauty of school choice: it empowers parents to make that decision.
BREAKING: Nebraska Senator Justin Wayne (D) again calls out his colleagues for sending their kids to private school while opposing school choice for others.
The conversation isn't us vs. them. It's about families having access to the learning environment that works best for their children.
Idk about you, but I trust parents to make that call better than politicians can.
You would NEVER travel with an airline that had a D rating.. but it’s perfectly acceptable to send our children to schools with that rating🙄 Parents are tired of waiting!!
