Dallas is built as if there is no sun, no heat, nor wind b/c we copy/pasted our zoning and development from everywhere else in the country rather than considered our climate. Our climate analog is Sevilla, Sp, which is built for the climate:

The answer here is that there shouldnt be a 35 thru the center of Austin bc it is bad at its one job (precisely bc of location) and it sits on several billions in land value, potential housing, and tax base.

A city not built strictly for the car is adaptable and resilient; can seemingly change overnight. Unfortunately, we spent decades wrecking adaptable urban form into something very fragile and will take similar time and investment to restore US cities to this level of efficiency.

The most important thing about this amazing Paris transformation is how fast it happened — how fast people on bikes “appeared” — once streets were transformed. You can’t write this off as “Paris was always this way,” because it wasn’t. It took leadership.

The Eisenhower Admin. opposed inner loops primarily because of cost, but they also knew it was bad transportation design. Meanwhile, the Robert Moses acolytes in the BPR were convinced inner-city highways would solve local traffic problems. Inner loops are congestion multipliers.

I couldnt be turned off more by this before/after, but a reminder, the gentrification and displacement that is happening in West Dallas is specifically due to the West Dallas plan from 2011 that maintained SF zoning "to prevent gentrification".
