Calving a heifer at 2 years old is more productive and economic💰
The average cost for rearing a heifer is £1819 or £2.31 a day.
The national average AFC is 26 months.
Reducing AFC by 2 months, to 24 months, could decrease rearing costs by nearly 16%.

A 5* calf shed seen yesterday!
This farmer had visited one of our customers up in Scotland to get some inspiration for his new calf building and this was the outcome!
The tube has been modified by a professional to ensure that the holes are placed correctly for that building.
Super exciting! 😁
2 months ago I applied to Tesco Future Farmers Foundation and out of over 400 applicants I was 1 of 100 chosen for the selection days (hence the PP)! 🐮
Today I got the email that I’ve been offered 1 of 50 places for next years programme!! 🥳

I visited this farm as the calves were suffering badly from crypto and rotavirus.
After a 2 hour discussion of things to implement, I said I’d come back in 2 weeks time to see how things were going.
I can’t believe the difference in them in such a short space of time!!
Chuffed that I’ve got my first university qualification!
I decided to go straight into work after A-Levels and began a distanced MSc on the side in 2020.
4 months per module has been intense, on top of a full-time job, but a chunk is complete!
3 modules and a diss to go!

Always a pleasure visiting

.
Temperature and humidity controlled calf shed.
Slatted individual/paired housing for the first 7-10 days, spacious group pens on automatic feeders (feeding volumes up to 12L per day) and a bright airy environment.

Tucking in to her chopped straw to encourage her rumen to develop 😍
Provide straw, ideally chopped (2cm length), to calves on milk, alongside palatable starter feed and fresh water.
Straw acts as a “tooth pick” to prevent rumen papillae sticking together, and as fibre.
The day is finally here!! 😍
We have got the keys to our first house 🔑💖
I never thought I would be a home owner at the age of 20 but if you work hard and save hard it is possible! 🤘🏼
Here’s to a busy month or two turning our house into a home! 🏡

Colostrum - 4L in 1st feed followed by another 2L within 12 hours.
Milk - high fat, 100% dairy protein fed at 8L/d with a 3 week wean to encourage starter intake.
Straw, water and quality starter feed provided from day 1.
Healthy, happy, well-developed heifers 🐄🐄

Love being a woman in agriculture, and one that chose to come into the sector due to love and passion for the industry and not because that is what my family has always done 🐮❤️
#womeninag
Jules: What is that?
Farmer: It’s a bag of grass seed.
Jules: Oh right… a new method of keeping birds away?
Farmer: No, just stops the mice from getting it.
Fair enough 😭
Heartbroken. Devastated. No words describe this feeling. Losing your fur brother after 14 years really hurts. Such a beautiful boy that’s been mum’s sidekick since I moved out 4 years ago. We will always love you and remember you, and will forever miss your erratic barking 💙💙
👩🏻🌾 STRAW 👩🏻🌾
Fibre promotes development of the muscular layer of the rumen wall.
“Scratch Factor” helps to prevent the papillae from clumping together - improves absorption efficiency.
Feed straw over hay to keep intakes lower - higher intakes of starter feed essential.
🐮 Fellow Twitter Farmers! 🐮
Have any of you got photos of your calf sheds/set ups that you’d be willing to share with me??
Every farm is different so would love to see the variation in sheds that work! 😁

Approx 50% of calf deaths on farm are due to scours (caused by poor hygiene).
To reduce the risk:
- harvest colostrum hygienically
- 4L colostrum at 50g IgG/L
- snatch calves off dam
- bucket/equipment/staff hygiene
- isolate sick calves
- vaccination of dry cows
- quality CMR
A beautiful Bradnick heifer 😍
Seen a few WWS heifers this week and it’s given me flashbacks!
I used Pepper, Bradnick and Mardi Gras before I left my herdsman job so seeing them on farm growing up really makes me smile!
Fresh out the oven 🥧
- Snatch calf after it’s been licked
- Keep calving pens clean, dry and well bedded
- 4L colostrum @ >22% ASAP after birth
- Dry and put calf jacket on
- Put in disinfected, straw individual pen
- 2nd colostrum feed
- Transition milk then high-fat CMR
I may be biased but don't
@tedstractor
's heifers look amazing!
Vitality calf milk and Sprinter+ pellets then onto straw and 18% rearer nut.
Discussed putting straw out with them at turnout to reduce the risk of set backs in weight gain whilst they transition to grass.
A customer’s gorgeous montbeliard youngstock, fed on Vitality 🥛
Key take home messages for productive calves:
- colostrum sets a calf up for life
- look at your milk replacer label!
- feed 6-8L per day
- feed at least 900g per day
- clean, dry, warm environment
- hygiene!
When rearing calves, we must focus on:
1) Nutrition
2) Environment
3) Health
In order to provide young calves with enough energy to move and breathe, to fight off disease, to keep warm, and to grow.

This is so sad but today I took my first silage sample and sent it off for mineral analysis to do my first dairy mineral quote! 🐮
If you don't celebrate your little wins then who will 😂👍

I’m sure you’ll all agree that these girls look amazing!
Highly digestible, top-quality milk replacer and rearer nuts paired with great attention to detail and fantastic management. ✅
Amazed at the improvements we have seen since I started working with them in 2019. 🥰
They make my heart melt ❤️
Had to grab a couple of pictures of these weaned girls. They are such an even group and look at the depth on them! 🤩
One girl just fancied the limelight a little more than the others 📸

Finally home after a very long day ending a very busy week! 🐮
One thing’s for sure - if you are a customer of mine, I will not leave you without milk replacer! No matter what time of day, day of the week, or where you are (within reason) 😂
Ready for a brew and my bed!

Tried out the new humidity meter this afternoon. 💦
Humidity wants to be as close to 50% as possible, or below.
A humid environment can suggest poor ventilation and it allows airborne bacteria and viruses to thrive.
This shed was reading high 50’s/low 60’s.
#measuretomanage
Testing ventilation yesterday with some smoke bombs! 💨
As you can see, the smoke rose from vents of the igloo and cleared within the minute ✅
These are also very useful tests to determine air flow within a shed. Fresh air is the best free medicine! ⭐️

A nice 2-page spread about how well Tom's calves are performing on Vitality 🐮
He has been on ECM for nearly 2 years, and the in-calf heifers look amazing!
From birth - 70d they averaged 0.85kg/d, and from 7 - 70d averaged 0.92kg/d.

Feeding accelerated levels of milk but weaning at 10 weeks achieves the heaviest liveweight and ensures a smooth transition from milk to feed.
Give calves at least 2 weeks to wean to encourage starter intake and rumen development.

Having a great weekend in Dublin so far!
One year older and one more grey hair to the head 👵🏼
Here’s to my 23rd year being better than the last… though I’m not sure that’ll be hard to beat 😅🤦🏻♀️
Been to see my customer this morning and he’s just put a new milk vending machine in 😍🥛
Glass bottles or cups for fresh milk or milkshakes on the go!

Name a better sight than a shed full of shining, sleeping calves? 🤩
So content after their morning feed.
Don’t skimp and save in the first 2 months of life.
Feed conversion efficiency is 50% pre-weaning, dropping to 10% by 12 months old.
More you put in = more you get out!
Everyone seems to be getting engaged, getting married, having a baby, and all I’m asking for is a pupper companion 🐶 You’d think I was being unreasonable!! 😂

Awesome trip to Italy visiting a 500-cow Holstein farm and a Grana Padano factory.
AA balancing used in the diets and all calves offered an electrolyte feed at dinner time for the first 14 days of life.
Coming back a stone heavier but keen to know more about AA in UK diets…
I went and visited my favourite girl yesterday 😍
It’s been nearly 2 years since I last saw her and she came straight over to me for a head scratch and snuggle 🥰
She was the calf of the first cow I ever calved, and my show calf at local shows. Now in her 2nd lactation 🥛🐮❤️
Went to visit these beautiful heffys this afternoon and they are looking very healthy and well grown! 😍

Happily chewing their cud!
Provide water, starter and straw from birth.
Starter = Starch = VFAs = Rumen Development and Calf Growth.
Straw = Toothpick/Fibre = Increased SA and Rumen Health.
Water = Perfect Rumen Environment = Improved Digestion = Increased DMI and FCE.
Super pleased having visited one of my customers to see that the suggestions and protocols I put together a month ago have worked a treat! These calves are pampered!
Happy, healthy calves!! 😁🐮

10 days old and chewing it’s cud 🐮
These calves are being fed Astralac+ at a rate of 150g/L, 6L a day.
They are also on our calf rearer nuts and taking to them well in the first week.
Calves are growing between 0.8-1.2kg/d.

Went to get a second weight for a customer’s calves yesterday and this girl was top of the class! 🐮⭐️
She’s done 1.56kg/d since we came 4 weeks ago.
We also weighed the bucket of feed given and found they were on 5kg/h/d of rearer, so we have cut this back to 3.5kg plus hay.
Testing ventilation yesterday with smoke bombs.
Calves bought in from different sources, not arriving til 3 weeks of age.
- Current fan being repositioned so no direct draught on calves.
- More fans to be added.
- Swabs to be taken by vet to find cause/s of respiratory disease.

Temperatures are still fluctuating and way below a calf’s lower critical temperature of 12-15 degrees.
- Ensure a nesting score of 3 (all legs covered)
- Calf jackets on calves <4 weeks
- Keep milk volumes high to increase energy intake
Energy = maintenance, growth, immunity.
Great day at

seeing how they rear their calves and manage their youngstock 🐮
The protocols and great teamwork seen on this farm are reflected in the health and performance of these calves.

Interesting to hear about NSAIDs at calving to prevent lameness and metabolic disease, as haven’t heard much on this since Total Dairy 2 years ago.
- We MUST grow them well pre & post-calving.
- Heifers are not cows!
- Target 5 lactations.
- 17% of heifers exit.

📐 Measure To Manage 📐
Yesterday we weighed 40
calves for a customer in Cumbria.
The calves were a mix of Holstein, Jerseys and BB and had a great environment.
We used the Tru Test Eazi Weigh 7 and scales to get accurate results and they were so easy and simple to use.
