In my 1st year as a head coach, during a challenging time, a coaching peer told me, "Even Jesus couldn't keep 12 apostles happy." Moral of the story: if you try to please everyone, you will please no one. Lead by conviction and live with the result.

Saw an awesome video yesterday with a great reminder: Kobe didn't like Phil at first... as he matured, he asked for him to come back. The people who make you uncomfortable are usually the ones who will make you most successful. Be comfortable being uncomfortable.

Quit telling me you want to play D1. Show me. Too much talk about elite dreams while blending in. If you don't stick out in every gym your in, you're not D1. In fact you're not a college basketball player. Million $ dreams 10 cent work ethic doesn't translate to the next level.

I would encourage all prospects who think they are being "slept on" to watch the NAIA National Tournament. No one recruits to their level and has success. Plenty of D1 ball players on the floor. Respect the level that recruits you, quit complaining, and get to work.

As good as he was on the court, he got a fan in me for how he acted after the game. My guys were understandably inconsolable. Instead of celebrating, a SO. in HS mind you, was trying to motivate them and tell them they should be proud. Pretty incredible.

We won the state championship on a Monday. The whole world shut down due to COVID by that Friday. Today, for the first time in over 2 years, all 5 starters from the state championship were in the gym at the same time to work with my current guys.

Too many college coaches claiming they want winners then recruiting cute over solid. At the end of the day, the kids you recruit determine if you keep your job. If my jobs on the line every game, I'm talking fundamentally sound dogs over potential and too cool.

All these skills and 0 understanding of the game. Guards: get a trainer who will teach you how to manage a game. If your team goes two possessions in a row w/o a bucket, it is your job to make sure you get your guys in spots where you will get a great shot on the 3rd possession.

Youth 🏀 notes 4 parents/coaches after a day in the gym: 1. Care more about the kid's body language than his shooting percentage. 2. Don't let/make your kids be the victim. Teach them how to handle adversity. 3. Let the reps be teachers. No one remembers the 7th grade record.

2 thoughts after observing basketball this weekend: 1. Quit saying kids have changed. Adults have - hold them accountable. 2. A kid's worth is tied to more than wins and losses. Invest in them as people - they will let you coach them harder once they know that you care.

Been to 4+ club tryouts this weekend. Players: taking tough shots that are unnecessary don't show us your skill. It shows lack of IQ. Make the game simple. If that's the best shot you can create for yourself and teammates, you CAN'T play at the next level.

The most inaccurate thing I was told as a young coach is that it takes 3-5 years to build culture. Building culture is a daily process, you never arrive, and it doesn't get easier. You have to draw your line in the sand as far as what you stand for and compete for it daily.

Sports are cutthroat: effort without execution is nothing. No college coach says, "Let's sign the kid who sprints so hard on every closeout that he gets blown by." Let that sink in: If your coach is still trying to teach you to play hard instead of execution, you are WAY behind.

Humbling experience. Grateful for all the leaders who have invested in me and given me the tools to invest in others.

Overheard some kids dogging on current NBA players at the mall. "He is trash. He is overrated and not even close to being one of the greatest of all-time." My guy: Just making it to the league makes you one of the all-time greats. That is as elite as it gets. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

A big part of that play working: Booker setting the screen. The Clippers didn't want to help off Booker. How many "star" players wouldn't be willing to set that screen because they'd be mad about not getting the last shot?

We got better during our time in Utah. Huge steps forward. More importantly, the boys got to celebrate Mrs. Augustine finishing her last round of chemo. Her toughness and grit have inspired our community. Just Us. Just some kids from Ironwood.

I love my guys. They care and play hard. Tough lose tonight to a skilled and well coached team. I rarely do this but if you need a 2020 guard, Dom Gonzalez is the real deal. 30 points tonight.

. @PrepHoops is special. Numerous phone calls/e-mails with the leaders in which they stressed this: if there is a kid who is capable of playing in college, regardless of level, we want to know about him. It isn't a hype train organization; we want to find the 💎 in the rough.

It’s not close. @PrepHoops has over 10,000 players ranked and produces close to 30,000 articles on well over 150,000 players nationally.

I know I'm not the only one watching. Tied game between an NCAA Tournament caliber team with an 18 game winning streak and #9 @ACUMBB with 8 minutes left. Keep talking levels, though.. Go Dom and Firestorm!

This world needs the type of leaders we had in this locker room. There is a lot of craziness in the world, but I have hope for the future because of these young men. They will do far more than win a state title.

I was fortunate to be interviewed by my good friend @KevinMcCabe987 this morning. One of the best in the business. Kevin does so much for the high school sports community. If you would like to tune in and listen, it starts at the 13:30 mark: .

Every year, I receive a letter about a coach whom I coach against that bad mouths him... it leaves me speechless. Incredible coach and incredible man. Unfortunately, no matter how much you do, you will always be the villain in someone's entitled story.

A long way to go, but two games into his college career for the 9th ranked team in the nation for NAIA: 1 start, 9 ppg, 2 rpg, 63% from 3... most importantly 2-0. He loves winning. Every program needs a Dominic Gonzalez. #ChampionshipMentality
