@HenMazzig They claimed Israel bombed the hospital in the first days of war and 500+ civilians were killed. Turned out terrorirsts' rocket fell short and killed about 25 people in the parking lot. So, I wouldn't be surprised if the actual civilian casualties are lower by a factor of 20x.

Android developers: 50MB feels a bit too much for my app, so maybe I should try to reduce the size a bit. iOS developers: 200MB is totally fine. If the users had had money for an iPhone, they can surely deal with some extra MBs.

OkHttp and Retrofit are just marvels of software development. Their API is beautifully elegant, they do exactly what they claim to do and the extension points they expose are sufficient to support any reasonable customization.

I don't understand how anyone can claim that Android development became simpler in recent years. Implementing two trivial screens according to the official guidelines took me several hours and required 4+ complex libraries. Must be hell for newcomers. Great for job security 😎

I absolutely hate 'for' loops in Kotlin. Constantly afraid of off-by-one errors because I forget which of these unclear idioms are inclusive and which aren't. If not for unit testing, I wouldn't be able to sleep when I write Kotlin code.

@muhammadshehad2 I'll just leave this here: this boy's left hand was relatively OK when he was exchanged. I had the misfortune to break two boned in my hand this year. Even though I got immediate medical attention, my hand looked much worse than this boy's "fractured" hand after "8 days".

I absolutely hate it when experienced devs call something complex "simple". It made me feel stupid and fed my impostor syndrome in the past, when I was new dev myself. IMO, it's a form of professional "gaslighting". Examples today in Android: DI, coroutines, ViewModel, etc.

I miss the old days of Android development when you could just jump into a project, bump the versions of dependencies and get on with your work. Nowadays, after Kotlin and co., updating dependencies is hours of work and wrestling with cryptic errors to get the thing to build 🤯🤦‍♂️

Three immediate conclusions from the above graph: 1. The first lockdown was totally unnecessary. 2. The "wave" that "required" the second lockdown was very similar to what we experience every winter. 3. At no point COVID caused higher excess mortality than worst winters.

@birb_k Vaccine fanatism made us blind to the fact that covid is probably a treatable disease. 200 million people, pretty much no covid mortality. So, millions died needlessly not due to vaccine hesitancy, but due to vaccines obsession (and, most probably, incompetence and corruption).

5 years ago, an army of RxJava fans thought I'm either crazy or a provocator when I said that there is no future for RxJava in Android. Today, new Android developers don't know what RxJava is. Lesson: don't tie your identity to a technology and remain open-mided.

Many new Android developers don't know that we could retain data across configuration changes long before ViewModel came around. In fact, it was simpler before ViewModel. For example, I've just noticed that some official docs still recommend using Headless Retained Fragments 🤟

I've just realized that in most of my latest Android projects I had had just "drawable" folder, as opposed to "drawable-hdpi", "drawable-xhdpi", etc. In my opinion, support for vector drawables was one of the biggest steps forward in Android development, ever.

Student asked about the roles of Handler and Looper in Android framework. The best way to understand these classes is to build your own handler and looper, so I did just that in this latest Android Bit #14 .

@newborn271828 @SergioRocks The guy didn't ask to accomodate anything. It's his beliefs, so he dropped out. There is nowhere to draw a line here. OP decided to shame him for his religious beliefs and earn some social points on Twitter. I'd draw a line here, if I'd be employed by him.
