It's important to blast failures not only successes. Today, I heard that the university voted my promotion to full professor down. My letter writers and department were extremely supportive. I just wanted to thank my letter writers. I guess it's time to rethink my future.

Duflo is an amazing role model for economists. 12 years ago, I was at the NEUDC presenting a poster (with my baby behind me). She asked me about my Brazil work. I didn't come from a top econ dept, but she still cared enough to ask me about my work. I will never forget that!

I picked up my 10 yo from school. He was so excited to tell me that he learned how to code. He also learned about the top 10/20 coding programs, and did not hesitate to tell me that #Stata was not one of them but R was. He also said a language called Python seemed cool.

I worked in policy for 9 years before going back to academia. I never regret that choice. It gave me a unique perspective when approaching my research. I think we need to break the cycle that all PhDs must go into academia. It doesn’t help morale and there aren’t enough jobs.

This bears repeating: PhDs who end up working outside the academy (for whatever reason) are not failures. The academy has no monopoly on great and important work. There are great success to be had in other sectors. Enough already with the professional elitism.

This paper was fun to write and took years. We identify why farmers were overwatering in an irrigation scheme using high-frequency data. Then, we test whether providing farmers info on crop water requirements led them to conserve water.

It took me years to get through an NIH R03 grant proposal which gave me 1/2 of the amount of funds-as a professor. Some of my grad students can’t even fund a plane ticket to perform qualitative research. I don’t want to knock down my peers, but some self-awareness is crucial.

My son’s BF’s mom convinced me to take a break from work. Our families went to Sedona for a hike. At mile 0.89 I twisted my ankle. Spent 3 hours at the Bone & Joint Center in Flagstaff. Believe it or not, I feel more relaxed. I only had to worry about myself for 3 hrs. Luxury.

Everyone is asking what is happening to #WomenInSTEM . Here's a taste. Prominent #science journal asks me to review a paper in 7 days. I said w/ kids, work, etc., I can deliver a report in 4 weeks. They decided to instead seek alternate reviewers, who may be less qualified.

Descriptive work is important! However, if you submit a manuscript that reads like a report, i.e. describe a bunch of data with no clear connection to a specific literature/audience nor emphasis on why these stylized facts are useful to know then publishing it will be hard.
