On the proposed pilot scheme for single judge rape trials, I am unsure whether there has been much discussion of this: the senior judiciary who will be deciding these cases is, as a generality, older, more gender imbalanced and privileged than the rest of society (sorry!). 1/5

A few weeks ago, something noteworthy happened to me. I was the Advocate Depute prosecuting a High Court trial. My opponent was also non-white (and an excellent lawyer!). So, you had a High Court trial being prosecuted and defended by lawyers from ethnic minority backgrounds. 1/3

The @GlasgowCC decision to cut funding to organisations like @CitAdviceScot , @GovanLawCentre and @CastlemilkLaw is incomprehensible at this time. They provide essential legal services to the vulnerable and their vital work should be protected and not impeded. Please reconsider!

Seeing the amount of abuse on social media from anonymous accounts, is it time that social media platforms start using account verification so that a known identity is privately associated with each account, even if the user can select a username that maintains public anonymity?

The @FacultyScot is not a private members club in the sense being used. Anyone who meets the entry requirements can become a member. Members elect our office bearers. This mischaracterisation can damage efforts to encourage more lawyers from under-represented backgrounds to join.

Can the Scottish court grant UK-wide orders in intellectual property cases? The Inner House in William Grant v Lidl has said "yes" where the defender is domiciled in Scotland (e.g. place of business). It therefore extended the interim interdict from Scotland to the whole UK. 1/3

One of the best parts of a career at the Bar is the variety of work. I made my first appearance in the Upper Tribunal (Administrative Appeals Chamber) this morning (as a standing junior to the UK Gov't) in an appeal on the extent of the inquisitorial function of the tribunal. 1/2

On this date 12 years ago, my “career” as a solicitor came to an end after 13 days as I was removed from the @Lawscot Roll of Solicitors in preparation for devilling at @FacultyScot . Qualified as a solicitor on 31/8/2010. Removed on 13/9/2010. Short and sweet! 🤣

My condolences to Paul’s family, friends and colleagues at @westwaterstable . We studied together on the Diploma many years ago. It’s absolutely tragic to see his life cut short when he still had so much to give to the world. RIP.
