I’m on a Board of Directors meeting on Zoom. People are introducing themselves and saying “And my pronouns are she/her” or whatever. I simply gave my name. They asked me to declare my pronouns. I said: “I declare that my gender is the least interesting thing about me.”

A poor man is dying in the nursing home. The local priest I called refused to provide Last Rites, saying the Bishop has disallowed it. I begged him to show mercy and do the right thing. He didn’t want to get in trouble, he told me. I am heartbroken by this abject betrayal.

I was angry when a colleague wasn’t returning time-sensitive calls & emails. “Doesn’t he know how important this is?”, I thought in disgust. I learned today he’s been grappling with an awful cancer diagnosis. Moral is clear: Make charitable assumptions about people’s behavior.

My son came within inches of getting hit by a speeding car yesterday. I can’t stop thinking about it. He’s never spoken about angels to me before but said: “I felt something pulling me back. I think it was my Guardian Angel.” I thank God for his protection, either way.

My confessor reminded me that one day in heaven everything will be made perfectly clear. Why the Good God allowed us to carry such heavy crosses; every apparent contradiction, every “unheard” prayer. It was all perfectly deigned to ensure our salvation. We are so blessed.
