It's amazing how benchmarking a PostgreSQL change led to discovering an SSH compromising backdoor.
Makes you wonder how many developers in the world have the skills and stamina to investigate an issue end-to-end these days.

Excited to see llm.c using Ubicloud's GPU runners!
Also, thanks for the shout out to Ubicloud and Nvidia in the commit message!
We love llm.c because it removes a lot of the mystery around what it takes to train LLMs. train_gpt2.c provides a clean,
Earlier in the year, we open sourced the world's first open-source managed PostgreSQL solution. Today, we're sharing our design and what goes into running PostgreSQL for our customers.
At Ubicloud, we've been working on performance optimizations to our networking stack.
We recently came across Flowtables - a network acceleration feature in the Linux kernel. If you're interested to learn more about Linux networking:

AWS popularized Arm-based CPUs with their Graviton line. When compared to x86, this new CPU architecture offers better price / performance and uses up to 60% less power.
We expected that enabling a new CPU architecture on Ubicloud would be tricky. We were pleasantly surprised
AWS, Azure, and GCP load balancers don’t support random as a load balancing (LB) algorithm. If you’re into distributed systems, ever wondered why?
After all, random is the simplest stateless way to distribute load across VMs/containers.
There are two ways to build elastic load balancers in the cloud today. You (a) take a solution like HAProxy and put it inside a VM or (b) reprogram your existing network plane to do load balancing.

Recently, a few users on Hacker News asked us how Ubicloud does encryption at rest.
To answer this question,
@pykello
wrote down our approach in a blog post.
In short:
1. We leverage open source projects.
2. We use Cloud Hypervisor (CH) to provide

One of Ubicloud’s networking features is firewalls. We wrote a blog post to describe how we implemented this using the Linux kernel’s Netfilter / Nftables subsystems.

We're excited to sponsor the Cloud Hypervisor and net-ssh projects! As other cloud providers pour in millions of dollars in GPU credits, we feel that key open source projects are getting left behind.

Investors, customers, and hackers asked us why we're building with Ruby in this day and age.
Our CTO

83% of enterprises now plan to move workloads back to private cloud from public cloud. Respondents cited high costs, lock-in risk, and security as top reasons to repatriate.

The EU's new Data Act requires cloud providers to eliminate all switching costs (data egress fees) by Jan 2027. It also imposes requirements for cloud portability.

It’s for this reason that cloud load balancers support round-robin as a stateless load balancing algorithm. Sneak preview: Ubicloud network load balancers are live as of today and they support round_robin and hash_based LB algorithms.

Thank you for the tweet!
We think PostgreSQL is becoming the data platform of choice thanks to its liberal open source license and unique extension APIs. This blog post shows how you can get MongoDB compatibility anywhere with

.
We ran bunch of simulations to demonstrate this effect. For example, if you have a load balancer that serves 16 VMs, and your LB serves 2K requests, the most heavily loaded VM will serve 38% more traffic than the least heavily loaded VM.
This question came up as
@sahinffurkan
was designing Ubicloud's network load balancer.
Short answer: using random as an LB algorithm leads to a non-uniform load distribution across VMs.
@TylerAYoung
@quatermain32
Hi there, please give us a try and tell us what you think. Ubicloud runners go up to standard-30 (and standard-60 upon request)!
@quatermain32
- thank you for the shout-out!
This only makes sense. If you randomly assign requests to a large pool of VM/containers, one VM out of 16 will get lucky and won't have to serve as many requests. Another VM will get unlucky and receive more requests than all others. You’ll then need to plan your capacity for the
