An EF-1 tornado touched down in Addison, Vermont last night and was on the ground for a mile with maximum wind of 90 mph. Levi Barrett caught the twister on camera and shared with our team. 🌪️
Look how the cars were violently flipped over and destroyed in the flood and landslide in Barre. This is Vermont Route 62. Chopper footage is from WCVB-TV Boston’s Sky5, which flew to the region to help us out.
ECLIPSE CLOUD COVER: Totality takes about an hour to cross the United States. Vermont and the Adirondacks could be the BEST place in the country to take in the spectacle!
The Benson, Vermont tornado was on the ground for 12.3 miles and 22 minutes, but it may have lifted at different points. Flooded roads made it hard to get to every spot. Exact same area highlighted during our extended tornado coverage on NBC5 from 6:11 p.m. to 7 p.m.
All five of our meteorologists will be working Monday to keep you ahead of dangerous flooding that develops. This is the first ever “high risk” for excessive rainfall in the Champlain Valley. About two out of every five flood-related fatalities happen in the high category.
The iconic Vermont Route 100 corridor, along and near the spine of the Green Mountains where most of the ski areas are located, could be in the most trouble Monday afternoon. More than a month’s worth of rain in six hours or less.
Very impressed that
@KirkHerbstreit
and
@cbfowler
gave the Alma Mater a solid 40 seconds, uninterrupted, following the game on the national broadcast. Not something you see often.

The Winooski River at Montpelier, Vermont just surpassed the level seen during Irene in 2011 and continues to rapidly rise. A life-threatening situation in central Vermont!
Ski area summit snow forecast by Saturday noon. Killington and Mount Snow will be big winners! Hopefully power won't be an issue but the risk is there.
Weather radar captured

debris at about 28,000 feet, just after engine explosion, during descent. This is over western Berks County, Pa. The wind at flight level was out of the northwest, and debris was found on the ground in nearby Bernville, Pa.
Time sure flies. Seven years ago today, January 16, I started working at NBC5 News! Later this spring will mark 10 years of New England broadcasting. 🎉
Appreciate the kind words this week after the announcement that I will be taking over for
@TomMessner
later this year. This is our new promo that will air when Tom Brady returns to Foxborough on Sunday Night Football.
Vermont will see the worst of the flooding tonight through Tuesday. Many roads will be washed out. A widespread 2-4” rainfall with localized pockets of 5-10”. Some areas will be experience life-threatening flood conditions over the course of the next 48 hours.
The little circle is the violent (likely EF4/5) tornado in Mississippi, sending debris 30,000 feet in the air. The big circle is where that debris is falling out of the sky, up to 60 miles away from where the tornado is on the ground.
10 years ago today I started my professional broadcast career at ABC40 on Liberty Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. How time flies! After that, NBC Connecticut, then to NBC5 and where we are now in South Burlington. Fortunate all of that time has been in New England!
We had nine live reporters on NBC5 News tonight covering the historic flooding across Vermont. Thanks to our Hearst New England stations, WCVB Boston, WMUR Manchester and WMTW Portland for the help.
I was walking up Church Street and someone shouted my name. Turns out, it was William, and he wanted to meet me. I was so impressed by how he just ran up. His dad said I made his son’s night and he certainly made mine!
This is why snow squall warnings are issued! We just shot this video in the northern Champlain Valley of Vermont from the NBC5 First Warning Weather Lab. Video is normal speed.
@NWSBurlington
Looks like the worst storm of the night in Oklahoma so far. A discrete supercell merging into the main line, northwest of Tulsa. Barnsdall and Bartlesville right in the path.
The longest chairlift in the world, Sugarbush’s Slide Brook Express, is anticipated to roar back to life this coming weekend. At over 11,000 feet (two miles) long, the 1995 Doppelmayr was sidelined all of last season for a variety of reasons.
The greatest flood risk is now shifting into northern Vermont and the Champlain Valley. Most rivers in this area are expected to crest overnight. Some may approach or surpass Irene 2011 levels during this time!
Video of the Lyme, New Hampshire tornado! This is showing the parent thunderstorm. The tornado would have dropped from that rotating area. It was rated EF-1 with 110 mph wind! We sped the video up 300 percent.
The best ski conditions in years. Jackpot zone of 18"+ includes Killington and Sugarbush. Any sleet at Killington would be brief, maybe an hour or two. Much less snow over northern New York.
Over a month’s worth of rain in Middlebury just this evening. Some spots getting over a half-foot! This is just south of downtown. Maranda sent this picture to NBC5 News.
Both major weather modelling systems now have a favorable setup for a storm along the East Coast in the third week of March — sometime between March 18 and 22. Don't forget big snowstorms can happen around this time. 2017 blizzard map attached.
For the first time in a LONG time, there will be an upslope snow component after the main thump of snow. So, that means snow continues most of Thursday in the mountains. Look what happens as a result.
