I have a barber shop that's located in my school district that is willing to allow me to put books in his shop to encourage boys and men to read more. I need some book suggestions and donations though. Can you all recommend books with Blk characters and books for Blk men?
I don't look forward to PD week because I hate the group assignments, the condescending tones, the boring topics, and dealing with adults for large amounts of time. These next two weeks will be a challenge 🥺
Please don't try to growth mindset me about any of this.
I want to become a librarian so that I can make sure the black kids can have a space where they get to be who they are without someone trying to fix something about them.
And another thing!! Teachers not enjoying their PD week does not mean they should leave education, will have attitudes about it that will rub off on their students or anything like that. Not liking it doesn't mean we become unprofessional. Geesh.
Y'all made my heart smile this evening. I'll probably mute the thread in the morning.
If you are going to PD tomorrow and don't like it, still be kind to the presenters and the new teachers who are just excited to be doing real teacher stuff.
@muranofiction
Caught my student drawing a monster, gave him time to finish when his work was done and then asked if I could display it. There is never a reason to rip up someone's creations.
If teachers didn't have to supplement their income by getting second and third jobs, they would be better physically, mentally, and emotionally for their students. Vote for school board candidates that believe in raises for teachers.
Yes, I am specifically targeting blk boys and blk men because the purpose is to help close the achievement gaps and because representation matters to us. The Black Barber Shop experience is something dear to our culture. It's a great place for young boys to see men reading.
When people on social media go in on teachers because they don't understand their kid's homework, I truly have to tell myself to scroll by. Usually it is something really simple. But I wish they would quit asking us to teach it the old way. How about you learn it a new way?
But you can also suggest any books that boys and men would like. I'm dropping off a variety of books. And please retweet so that I can get some good recommendations.
No matter what I am reassigned to do next year, I'm not going to stop telling people I'm a librarian. If rappers without a record deal can be identified as rappers in crime related news articles then I can ALWAYS identify as a librarian.
After telling all of kindergarten at once that I wouldn't be in the library next year, one kid was spotted crying on the floor while others were lining up with teachers. It was my own little one.
Every day for the rest of the school year, think of a librarian. Write a note of encouragement. Send a quick email sharing appreciation. Buy lunch. Bring a sonic drink. Share a sticker. Make them laugh. Bring candy. Smile at them.
If you like them and all.

Then should we also stop praising them for when their kids are earning scholarships, getting great grades, and be productive citizens? They always get props when the kids is performing well and behaving appropriately.
One of my assignments is to read the School Board meeting minutes and let me tell you
@JulieHinaman
is DOING what she was elected to do for CFISD. How she is supporting the district and community is amazing. Let's keep people like her around please.
I did a lesson on plagiarism and paraphrasing today for my first observation. It was titled Kidnapping Ideas. The kids loved the shocked value. We practiced paraphrasing Humpty Dumpty and Itsy Bitsy Spider.
If I could skip straight to the part of back to school where I get to meet and hang out with my students instead of spending a week with adults, I’d feel a lot less stress 😅
Y'all can say what y'all want about our board. But you gotta always keep it positive and cute when it comes to Julie. I truly make sure I "aht aht..not Julie" when people start going in and pointing fingers.
A senior at Cy Ridge came to Willbern's library after his senior walk. He asked me where the DOAWK books were. He told his friends how much he loved them. I showed him the newest one. His face lit up. In his cap and gown, he took pics with the books.
@CyFairLibraries
Weeks after my divorce was final, I paid cash for my first semester of grad school to become a librarian. This was my own money. No loan. No money from a divorce settlement. I missed out on events for two years. I maintained a 4.0 at SHSU. I passed my certification test.
My
#librarytwitter
peeps are so anti Dewey Decimal System that when it was an answer choice about teaching kids to find a book, I didn't pick it on a practice test🤦🏾♀️
I got it wrong 😂😂

@muranofiction
Omg!! He did an amazing job because he didn't have anything out to reference in math class. This was in the fall, but I'm going to ask him now because it is still up. Lol Thanks! I need to keep up with my 3rd graders and know these things.
Today during prayer I held someone's hand and prayed with my eyes closed. At the end of it were told to hug the person we had been praying with. I hugged my Sorority sister and looked up to see it was Sue McGown! I was so excited to meet her. Her chapter visited us today
Today I told my students I wouldn't be at school tomorrow because I was going to be taking some time to learn how to be a librarian. They are so excited for me. They were smiling and asking me so many questions about it. I can't wait to tell them about it on Monday
Cried again today. Sick of it.
But I spent my last day planning with my amazing leadership team. I pray 2024-2025 is a beautiful year.
Now it's time to look at classroom decor.

I had a meal and a drink. The bartender said someone ordered a drink for me and the guy next to me that I had just met. Afterwards she said that the guy wanted to thank me for helping his daughter fall in love with reading. Librarians, you are valued.
Every school deserves the right fit for positions of impact. You really can't just drop a librarian into any school. It's like a heart transplant. You have to be sure, it's a good match.
Parents when you pick out coats for your school-aged students just know you might be picking out a coat for the lost and found. Take your time with that selection.
One of the students that encouraged me to go back to school, made this for me in the 20-21 school year. Still moving it with me wherever I go. 🩷Let me girl know

I try to limit group work to partner work unless it is due to lack of resources. But I always let the children choose their group AND give the option of working solo. My son was in elementary when he expressed how much he hated group work and I realized other kids probably do.
I just want to give a huge public hug to my boss
@cyfairMoorePrin
for being so supportive during my journey to becoming a librarian. She's made phone calls and emails on my behalf and I appreciate that so much.
@CFISDprin
@CyFairISD
She has NOT allowed me to feel discouraged.
My last read aloud for 3-5 was "The Legend Of Rock Paper Scissors". We ended with the most epic all grade level RPS challenge time. Eventually they gotnup and we all went into full battle mode
#Todayinthetrap
Well friends! It’s been a great ride and honor to be your superintendent! Although my last official day is Dec. 31, we all get sidetracked over the holidays, so I wanted to say thank you for your friendship, prayers, kind words and support! Until we meet again. ❤️ you all.
@wideeyedla
Because someone was surely going to say "You GET to have professional development and you maybe you haven't had a PD week that you like YET" and I just can't 😂😂
Libraries for all! This year I've taught any teacher that was willing, how to check their own books out. I had to host our VIPS, so these two did self check out. One is a 5th grade science teacher that got books so her kids could read to Kinder.
#todayinthetrap
Thankful that
@DrGoree
was able to share how she learned to love reading with our Whales. And on International Women's Day it was an honor to tell her thank you for her impact on my life.

One of my favorite kids is at the same party as my kid. She shouted out, "My librarian!!" I met her dad about a month ago when he thanked me for helping her love reading. Turns out she and my son have the same friend. Not a school friend either. Small world!!
@TeresaNeathery
@nice_teacher
Exactly. I'm reading and confused by why anyone would want to teach all day and then be "entertained" by the truth of what we deal with. We need a relatable outlet like this lol. We definitely don't need a series Dangerous Minds right now.
I read Henry's Freedom Box to my class today and I looked up to complete horror and sadness on the faces of third graders when I read that his wife and kids had been sold. We can't allow others to pretend that this didn't happen.
When I finally tell my kids that I won't be their librarian, my own little kid will be looking back at me. We spent all of last summer talking about this opportunity for US.
My student returned to school today after his mom passed this week and what he wanted most before leaving for a uncertain future was to be with his 3rd grade teacher, Ms.Brumfield. I am so thankful that he had someone he wanted to be with
@FranconeElem
and a village to love him
I have placement for my school library practicum!!!!
I get to the absolute pleasure of learning from
@MrsWWT
this semester!
I need an elementary and high school site supervisor too.
When I was a teacher and a young mom, the librarian used to take care of (and hide) my baby when my sitter would cancel. They would keep her behind the circulation desk 😂😂
We always got caught about midday. The baby is a junior now.
My interview for the SHSU library program was very much about having a space for all to learn in and be seen and heard. There will more than just tolerance in the library. Respect. Celebration. Acceptance.
@ari4short_
We're scattered around making eye contact everytime we read someone post something out of pocket! Hey! I'm not a vocal on here anymore but I check in.
Name a
#CFISD
School or building that is named after a Black person. To me each school is apart of
#CFISDblackhistory
. We should spotlight those things. We have moved on from Carverdale and segregation and we continue to push for diversity and equality in our district
When a kindergartener needs someone to keep their kid, they know they can count on the librarian. Baby Andrea was in great hands and returned safely to mama after my cafeteria duties.
#Todayinthetrap
The reason why I ever looked into working for CFISD was based solely on seeing
@SuptMarkHenry
interactions with his schools and students via social media in 2014. It was the best decision I've ever made for my career. We are a great district because of his leadership and love.
When a school has a lot of teachers leaving, does someone in central office come out and investigate? Do they interview the principal about that? Who notices?
Yesterday, I read to some students on my campus for Read Across America Day. This morning I had random students coming to me to tell me about which stories they loved the most. My heart is full.
Me: Okay guys I gotta go teach a library lesson so I can practice in order to become a great librarian
My class: You're already a great librarian!! Good luck!!!

The girl is getting ready to be a Senior. I paid for the oldest boy's two dual enrollment courses as a sophomore. That baby will be a first grader.
Although Ashton didn't end up a Wildcat, he was always welcomed and loved there too.
Today
@JulieHinaman
spent time in our library with a Life Skills class and 5th grade. Life Skills LOVES that Old Lady that swallows everything!!
We appreciate her celebrating

with us!
@CyFairLibraries
Sometimes I wish that when special visitors (board, superintendents, consultants) come to schools that the student leaders weren't the only ones that got to visit with them. Maybe the ones with struggling behavior should be seen and heard too.
@teachergoals
I had a parent do this, but I turned it around. I think it was great for the student to see me stand up for myself and not allow the disrespect that was happening to continue. I also learned why the student spoke to me the way he did immediately.
If you are in

and there is a family in need, send them to

This is for our community! Please retweet so that someone can be blessed.
