@MattHancock
I'm sorry, this is ridiculous. There is absolutely not a single chance this has been recommended by SAGE, and it certainly hasn't been communicated effectively to clinicians. This is going to kill people. This is a failure of governance. There will be more death on your hands.
@BernieTranders
Gotta say, having professionally entered many toilets, womens toilets seem to have a bimodal distribution from decent to absolutely disgraceful, where mens are more generally grim to a similar extent. The worst I’ve seen have been womens. Will endorse men not washing hands though
To summarise last night’s thread:
You won, Junior doctors. Enjoy the money, I hope it makes you happy. Dear lord, what a sad little life, Juniors. You ruined my night completely so you could have the money and I hope now you can spend it on lessons in grace and decorum.
If you can’t respect young people, fuck off out of teaching. If you can’t respect patients, fuck off out of healthcare. If you can’t respect people generally, crawl back under your rock and disengage from society like a good little troglodyte.
Astonishing that I sat in my living room last nightwith my Jewish wife and Jewish child, pretty well alive to the realities of antisemitism and the use of tropes in its depiction, and managed to watch University Challenge without imagining that a fluffy octopus posed a threat.
Absolutely delighted to be graduating medical school with honours. It’s particularly gratifying after scraping a pass in first year following an episode of serious illness, to be achieving distinctions in practical and theoretical domains.
I’m increasingly convinced that not using local anaesthetic for an ABG is unjustifiable. I’ve now had more than one person absolutely refuse an ABG until gentle persuasion and LA discussion gets them to agree, who’ve then been quite angry about what they were put through before.
One of the F1s on this rotation is genuinely the most engaging, patient, responsive and humble teacher I think I've ever come across. An absolute champion - yes I'm going to reflect this in various feedback methods.
At the risk of sounding like I’m plotting:
Registrars (and consultants, SAS and anyone else appropriate). Do you ever get referrals so stunningly incoherent/inept you agree to see out of bafflement?
It is in no way sinister. Empowering young people to have agency over their health while advocating parental engagement epitomises both ethical healthcare standards and the responsible handling of private data.
My 12 year old son received this letter from our GP practice this morning.
Is there anyone else out there who’s 12 year old received anything like this before their 13th birthday?
I’m shocked. This is so sinister.
@halomancer1
We give medication to cis men (and indeed women) all the time that induces lactation as an undesirable side effect - what on earth makes them think it’s not achievable deliberately with hormone therapies?
I’ve seen a few people recommend to new FY1s fighting fire with fire in terms of rudeness and I can’t overstate what rubbish advice that is. Being assertive and refusing to be made a doormat does not equal matching the energy of someone being an arsehole.
Lots of people being very kind to those who didn’t achieve their desired UKPFO allocations, but I do think a lot of the commentary misses the point. While I’m not there yet, I have a home, roots in my local community and my wife is a specialty trainee in the region where we live.
Just met two young boys (and their very patient mother) in Sainsburys. They spotted I was buying cat food and wanted to talk about our mutual felines. I’m pleased to report that their cat is black and white, 2 1/2, and very nice - but you have to be gentle or he might scratch.

I'm pro abortion and I'm not sorry about it. You are too if everything you've said there is true, and I don't think it's helpful to be embarrassed about it.
If you find injured or seriously unwell wild animals and you’re not comfortable humanely euthanising them (or you’re not sure how sick they are), take them to a wildlife rescue. Certainly don’t do CPR with rescue breaths on a wild animal.
Two nights ago I gave a wild baby rabbit CPR w breaths after I took it from my Petey (cat). Today, I’m being admitted to the hospital with signs of “bunny fever” (Tularemia). I’m on 8L oxygen, a cocktail of very expensive antibiotics, anti-diuretics. Need light & love, please!
We’ve been burgled overnight, anyone in the Birmingham/Black Country please keep an eye out for a black Vauxhall Insignia VA14 DFE and contact police urgently if spotted
I am increasingly finding it unfathomably rude when people simply refuse to interact with people delivering teaching or workshops online. It makes the whole session tedious and difficult for the person presenting and IMO damages the quality of teaching.
🧵🪡With the recent announcement of
@TheBMA
balloting junior doctors for IA, I thought I’d jot down my thoughts on the factors you might consider as a medical student when it comes to deciding whether to cross a picket on strike days. (Spoilers: don’t.)
I posted yesterday about imprecise comms.
1) Stay at home if you feel like it
2) Go to work if your boss asks
3) Don't see *too* many other people
4) Stay apart unless you don't want to

Baby’s and doggy’s first trip to the seaside. The people of Bournemouth seemed to most appreciate that he took it upon himself to sleep in the bottom of the pushchair to nap the walk back up the promenade away.
@speakoutsister
I’ve personally supported the delivery of two children of devout Muslim women.
This is yet another attempt to infantilise women under the guise of protecting their freedoms.
@BettyJa08291909
@AllisonPearson
Most universities ‘red flag’ people who demonstrate discriminatory behaviours for health programme selections. Is it possible she was rejected because she learned bigotry from her grandmother and conceals it as thinly?
I had a medical student ask if there were any ABGs that needed doing, which at the time there weren’t, and then 45 mins later I couldn’t find her 😭
I am sorry eager med student. I have failed you.
@TwisterFilm
@KatyMontgomerie
Unless you’re trying to argue that any outward expression of feminity is sexualised by default, that’s your mind at work Malcolm. Looking at that picture in isolation I saw a neutral image of a boy child and girl child. That’s literally what gender expression is.
FWIW I really strongly disapprove of this notion of using your credentials from one role which can prescribe while acting in another which can’t - it’s a subversion of the intent of the regulations and of Parliament
I’m an FY1 making £15.58ph and I just had to pay a plumber… absolutely nothing, because developing self sufficiency in basic household maintenance is an excellent cost saving strategy if you’re a homeowner.
#TomsTopTips
It adds basically no time. There are few circumstances where ABG > VBG where you genuinely have no time for LA where they’re not unresponsive. While I’m on it, why is topical cream not used more routinely in adults? Why are we making people suffer?
His uniform literally says “student physician associate” on it in highly contrasting capital letters. The thread is full of people who need to get a fucking grip.
@lifeoftazza
Insist upon emergency payroll - you have worked and are entitled to be paid regardless of their error. Be explicit that will pursue any costs you incur (overdrafts, necessary loan interest, non-payment penalties etc) as a result of non-payment.
My partner has spent the pandemic becoming some kind of fucking doctor doolittle and now look at the bullshit I have to put up with at the kitchen window

Well actually he was tried summarily by a district judge, but well done you for identifying the flaw in your own argument.
It would have a knock on effect on my entry to training, my wife’s ongoing training, our housing security and our relationship. At the *very* least an allocation somewhere I didn’t want can be planned for. A late allocation would make everything much harder.
@Xe4f145d16s2
My Paramedic Science degree says St George’s Medical School too. Shockingly I’ve never heard the identical claim from my professional peers.
I’m old enough to remember when the Guardian censored the Judith Butler interview in which they correctly identified that Trans exclusionary reactionaries are not meaningful allies in the fight against racism.
I think if today has taught me anything, it’s that my level of patience is as nothing compared to the forbearance
@Dr_BellaR
has shown in not calling every third person that’s responded to her a mewling little turd.
On the eve of the strike ballot, a shout out to
@Dr_R_Acres
, whose work for the 2022 AGM laid very substantial groundwork and built momentum for the FPR movement that got the BMA to this point. She wasn't the only person, but she is someone who deserves a great deal of credit.
All those on the reserve list having jobs in the end means less than nothing to me - I can work in my prior profession if I need to - but an allocation somewhere random at short notice would potentially be untenable and at minimum be fundamentally disruptive.
I’m at a loss as to why we seem to be losing focus on FPR when if you sacked all PAs tomorrow (not that you should) it wouldn’t fix really any of the problems with rotational training.
I’d like my money please, first and foremost.
There is no place in regulatory proceedings for violent abuse conducted as an adult, much less as a trusted healthcare professional to be excused. This is not a man whose presence should be welcomed. Sanction short of erasure is absurd

The nurse in charge is neither your boss nor a person to whom routine acquiescence is expected. They’re a colleague who should know better.
Following recent observations from
@abi_carey
, I do find it interesting how readily people leap to the ‘medical student’ in my bio while skipping over ‘Paramedic’ when attempting to suggest I lack understanding, experience or perspective in healthcare.
I’m really, really enjoying FY1 so far and it’s absolutely partly to do with how excellently supportive my department is. It’s genuinely been pretty top notch on their end.
