A touching moment from last night's
@Bengals
game:
@Giants
QB Eli Manning embraced Jared Lorenzen's son before the younger Lorenzen took the field for a halftime scrimmage with his youth football team:
Isaiah Hodgins was teammates with Josh Allen last year so I asked him about having an elite QB in the postseason. He said even last year - before Daboll and Schoen came here - the Bills would pull up Giants film to watch Jones.
The Giants did put a call in to Bill Belichick about their head coach vacancy... but it wasn't to lure him back to NY. I'm told Bill gave a glowing recommendation to the Giants on Joe Judge. That carried a lot of weight.
Giants-Chiefs game next week will feature a QB who runs recklessly, turns the ball over, gets little help from his offensive line, and clearly tries to do too much on each snap rather than be smart and live to play another down.
Daniel Jones will play too.
Make-A-Wish recipient Sam Prince will have his wish granted when he joins Roger Goodell to announce the fifth pick in the draft made by his favorite team: The Giants.
Rams in the Super Bowl thanks to bad call vs Saints. Saints in the game thanks to a dropped pass by the Eagles. Eagles in that game thanks to a double-doink field goal attempt by the Bears. And the Giants beat the Bears.
Clearly the Giants should be in the Super Bowl.
Lorenzo Carter told me a few months ago that when Andrew Thomas showed up on campus at UGA as a freshman and a starter, he and the rest of the edge rushers tried to put him in his place in practice. They quickly learned that Thomas was the real deal.
Tom Coughlin will appear in a poignant 3 1/2 minute segment during NBC's pregame coverage on Sunday (at 2:30 et) to pay tribute to his wife Judy and share a special message to the 53 million caregivers in the United States. Eli Manning and Justin Tuck will be part of the segment.
โWe always used to say: โDaniel Jones, heโs good, heโs up and coming,โโ Hodgins said.
And now that he has played with him?
โHeโs a general, man. Heโs got the smarts, heโs got the talent, heโs got that hungriness about him too. Itโs been awesome to play with a guy like that.โ
A little bit of an underplayed moment today: John Mara says the futures of Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley - basically everyone on the roster - will be up to the next GM and HC. No one is safe.
Add this to Dave Gettleman's Greatest Hits:
"People call you and they want the second pick of the draft for a bag of donuts, a hot pretzel and a hot dog. Leave me alone. I donโt have time to screw around."
Joe Judge says when there is an injury to the QB, there is "a list of guys who want to remind you that they played QB in high school. I remind them I did the same thing and I'm also not playing on Sunday."
Earlier today I wrote about Eli Manningโs conspicuous absence from Super Bowl functions & festivities. Turned out he had a pretty good reason.
Iโm told Charles โCharlieโ Elisha Manning was born a little after midnight on Super Bowl Sunday.
McShay: I've heard very strongly that there are important people in the building who believe in Saquon Barkley and being a physical, run-first team. Barkley can be the face of the team for the next 10 years. "It feels inevitable that Saquon Barkley is going to be a NY Giant."
Hodgins did say that he no longer thinks Jones is "up and coming."
"I think it's safe to say he is here to stay and he's only going to keep getting better and better."
Evan Engram's departure makes it 11 straight Giants first-round picks who didn't get or play a long-term second contract with the team. ELEVEN! Last one to do so was Kiwanuka (JPP pieced together a few short term deals and Odell was signed then traded). That's a loooong stretch.
If Kadarius Toney keeps playing like he did on Sunday, the Giants could wind up having three Offensive Rookie of the Year winners in eight seasons... and one winning record during that same span to show for it.
Giants & WR Darius Slayton agreed to paycut that will keep him on team source says. Drops his salary from $2.54m to league min ($965k). Saves Giants about $1.6 against cap. Slayton has a chance to earn some back with playtime incentives. Heโll be on the field for practice today.
The third-year jump the Giants need from Daniel Jones is different from the one other QBs have done/will make. He doesn't need to get "better." His good is already great. What he needs is to get rid of his bad, which is terrible, often ill-timed, and can be team-crippling.
I'm told both Sterling Shepard and Blake Martinez agreed to base salaries of roughly $2.25m with a chance to double that ($5m or so) in total with incentives in new deals. Should drop Martinez's cap # from $14m to about $8 and Shepard's from $12.4m to about $6.5m.
Evan Engram catches a pass and gets knocked down by Sam Beal. Entire practice field freezes and becomes battle ready. Beal quickly leans over and helps Engram to his feet. Peace in our time.
It was only the preseason but...
The Giants led the NFL in total offense (382.7 ypg), passing yards (272.7) and completions (102).
They led the NFC in passing attempts (143) as well as fewest sacks allowed (3).
The fact those last two happened concurrently is pretty good.
Kadarius Toney's body control - the way he stops and starts and can change direction - reminds me of another former first-round pick of the Giants who is no longer with the team.
No, not him.
I'm thinking David Wilson.
Kenny Golladay on Jake Fromm: "He really just came in and made the most of an opportunity. Things werenโt going well so he went in there fearless and said let me sling it around a little bit. He did a hell of a job."
Sorry, Daboll. Sorry, Sirianni. Another 29 sorries for the rest of you coaches too. After this week, no one deserves Coach of the Year more than Sean McDermott.
I keep seeing that the Giants' 4-1 record is their best "start" since 2009.
Folks, the Giants have had 4 or less Ws in three of the last five FULL seasons & no more than 6 in seven of the last eight. This is already one of their most successful seasons in nearly a decade.
Giants conducted their first remote interview with Brian Daboll about 7 hours after Joe Schoen was named GM.
Giants will have a second and in-person interview with Brian Daboll <24 hrs after Bills elimination game even kicked off.
So yeah, Iโd say heโs the favorite.
Yesterday I asked B.J. Hill how Ereck Flowers looks at G for the Redskins.
"He's doing good," he said. "He's a good player for them and for their offense."
Then we looked at each other and smiled.

Asked FOX analyst
@MichaelVick
about nickname Saquon gave to Daniel Jones after one of his many elusive scrambles this year. "I loved it! Not Danny Dimes but Vanilla Vick! Thatโs him. Heโs stamped with that now. He should change his number to 7 next year and really ride it out!โ
Assuming Jones and Glennon can't play, rookie WR Kadarius Toney is the most experienced passer available on the Giants' roster. He's thrown 3 passes this year.
Not only is Daniel Jones 0-7 in primetime games in his career, he is 0-4 in national games that start at 4:25 on CBS or FOX. He has never won a game when all or most of the country is watching.
Saquon Barkley saw the 6-7 340-lber in the locker room during his pre-draft visit.
โI was like โWow, who is that?,โโ Barkley recalled. โI was like โI would not be mad if we picked him up.โโ
A few weeks later Evan Neal was a Giant.
The NFL says it has not been able to identify an issue in last night's game with the Giantsโ communication system and it was not made aware of any issues during the game from the Giants through the standard communication channels used to identify gameday issues.
Re: Patrick Graham
If you interview for a promotion at your job and they give the position to someone from the outside but want to keep you where you were, wouldnโt you start eying other options elsewhere with a different perspective/aggressiveness?
Joe Judge on
@NBCSN
: "You could tell there was a different feeling for (Belichick) talking about the Giants than other conversations about other teams along the way."
Mahomes merely adopted the dark. Jones was born in it, molded by it. He didn't see the light until he was already a man, by then it was nothing to him but blinding. The shadows betray Mahomes, because they belong to Jones!
A leaky OL? Unlucky tipped INTs? It's a whole new world for Patrick Mahomes, but one in which Daniel Jones has spent his entire NFL career. via
@Newsday
Giants are going to run out of gold watches. Another vet has retired. This time itโs OL Zach Fulton, who informed the team of his decision last night. Fulton joins Todd Davis, Joe Looney and Kelvin Benjamin as guys who have hung โem up so far this training camp.
Special NYPD, FDNY and PAPD hats will be worn at the Broncos-Giants and Panthers-Jets games to commemorate the first responders who risked and lost their lives in the aftermath of 9/11.
He didnโt win a Super Bowl. Never even won a playoff game. He was rarely the best receiver on the team.
But Sterling Shepard deserves a great sendoff on Sunday as his Giants career comes to an end.
Give it to him, MetLife!
Give it to him, Daboll!!! โคต๏ธ
Gettleman says he saw the other QBs play during the regular season. Did not see Daniel in person until the Senior Bowl.
"He walked out there and I saw a professional QB after the three series that I saw. That's when I was in full bloom love."
What makes Joe Hortiz so appealing to the Giants? Since he was promoted to Ravens dir. of college scouting in 2009 the Ravens have picked 15 Pro Bowlers in the draft, 10 of whom were selected in the third round or later.
Kenny Golladay, whose 16.7 yards per reception since 2018 is the highest in the NFL, has no catches longer than 19 yards this season. Why hasn't he been used more downfield?
"I don't have an answer to that," he said.
I'm sure Twitter can come up with one for him.
Daniel Jones on Eli Manning's new gig on ESPN2: "Iโve watched a little bit of it. I think heโs pretty good. Heโs pretty funny. Heโs got some good one-liners and some good commentary. Itโs been fun to watch him and Peyton go back and forth."
The Giants are very confident that Daniel Jones will emerge as the championship-caliber quarterback they think he can be. If he canโt, though, Aaron Rodgers on the market after this season will be an intriguing option.
Initial word in Daniel Bellinger tonight is he will likely require surgery but his vision seems to be OK. Flew home w team. Will visit an ophthalmologist in NY tomorrow.
