Geek Time...If you ever wanted a great example of

forming when cold air moves over a warmer body of water, check out the Great Lakes this afternoon. Look at all that moisture being pulled out of Lake Superior!!

during the November 2014 storm that dumped several feet of snow south of the city, THAT’S a wall of snow!!

This video was taken by Mike Niziol in Harford, NY at 5:14PM looking North. It matches well with the SRM couplet at that time on the Tompkins/Cortland county line. Please contact me for media posts.

Some people fish when they retire, some travel, I prefer to spend part of my time sitting on my front porch watching clouds, just like I did as a kid 😉👍

Thanking everyone tonight for the

you offered up for my 98 yr old mom who, after testing positive for
#COVID19
several weeks ago is now negative and no symptoms thru it all. She’s one tough farm girl.

Zoomed look at today's mesoscale vortex on
#LakeMichigan
. They often occur under Arctic Highs with cold air/weak winds where local land breezes in the bowl-shape of the southern end of the lake helps shape the vortex.

I-90 (NYS Thruway) just south of
#Buffalo
. Most traffic is moving slowly but surely, but then you have idiots who are moving way too fast, in right hand lane yet!! What is SO important that you risk your life and others to drive so fast in a whiteout?
@foxweather
That is one, beautiful, gnarly monster out there in the Pacific right now and it will impact the Western U.S. over the next few days.

Mom will be 101 years old Saturday. We took her out today and she wanted to play in the leaves. The smile on her face at the end of this video is priceless 😊👍👍

The view out my front porch at 3800 feet here in Roan Mountain Tennessee. I think we have reached peak leaf season today.

When I first started in this business, resolution of weather models was so coarse, they didn't even "see" the Great Lakes and couldn't predict lake-effet snow. Now we have models that explicitly predict mesoscale vortices. THAT'S AMAZING!! 09z HRRR 5hr forecast.

Wow, what a Spring
#storm
. From space you get some idea of the scale. BTW, the little "eye" that briefly appears just south of Cape Cod is likely the center of the 986mb secondary Sfc Low.

I've been capturing video from this webcam in Fort Myers all day and I've put it into a Timelapse. Check out the storm surge rushing in! Crazy.

WOW!! Look at that fire hose of moisture coming off Lake Erie. You can clearly see the way the bands converge to make one mega-band at the east end of the lake. LOVE the shadowing on the north wall at sunset!!

#Buffalo
has officially hit 100" of

for the season. Last year at this time
#Buffalo
had 9.3" of

for the season. They are nearly 6 ft. above normal right now. Oh, BTW, it's not even January 1st yet. WOW!!

Wild to see how many varieties of dendritic forms I saw today. Yes, no two snowflakes are EXACTLY alike, very similar but when you get down to the details, each is a unique sculpture of Mother Nature. Enjoy!!

Visible satellite loop of

Virtually NO ice on the open waters of the Great Lakes in mid-February, unprecedented since data was archived back to 1973.

She beat me again!! Up here in Buffalo visiting my mom, her 102nd birthday is Sunday. Her math skills are still untarnished 😊👍👍 I'll make sure to post some photos from her birthday.
Don't get many days in the 50s in February in Buffalo, so today I took mom out to her homestead, The Farm, for some "quality time" on the side-by-side. I was concerned to take a 102 year old out like this but her reply when I asked was "SURE!!!"
#familyfun
Same process that forms lake-effect snowbands on Great Lakes is producing wind parallel clouds in the GOM today. Concave shape of Mobile Bay creates convergence zone that leads to that "stronger" cloud streamer. Prevailing winds are from the north.

Yes, that is correct, it’s 4 days before summer solstice and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect. The U.S. is an amazing place diverse weather!!
@foxweather
This is the most
#snow
#Buffalo
has ever had to this point in the season, back to 1884 or 138 years. Their normal for the entire season is 95.4". Even heavy hitters like Marquette are falling behind and the other snowy cities aren't even close.
#winter
Still a few days out, but this is a Classic setup for a significant ice event with warm, Gulf moisture streaming northward over the shallow Arctic air from that 1045 High. Stay tuned...

I normally do NOT put out 10-day model loops. However, I couldn't resist showing the "pitching machine" throwing one storm after another across the U.S., each one bringing down colder and colder air in
their wake.

Got mom out yesterday to give her a lesson on how the stabilizing effects of the cooler waters of Lake Erie suppress cloud development at this time of the year. Knowing her son, she just smiled and said I’m enjoying the day, at 102 that is wisdom!! ❤️
