Portsmouth’s done amazingly well at slowing the spread of coronavirus. We’re the most densely populated city outside of London, yet we’re ranked 299th out of 313 council authority areas for the number of new cases since May 9. This is huge. Keep going!

Wow, who would've thought a tiny error during build - 0.8mm to 1mm - could cause a huge multi-million pound headache. Well, that's what's happened to HMS Prince of Wales, says the UK defence secretary. That minute misalignment of a prop shaft has cost an eye-watering £25m.

NEW: A source close to @PennyMordaunt has told me she will “100 per cent” throw her hat back into the ring to become the next Prime Minister. Ms Mordaunt came third in the last leadership race behind Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. No confirmation from Ms Mordaunt yet though.

LATEST: Portsmouth-based frigate HMS Richmond supported the operation to retake Nave Andromeda tonight. In all, 16 SBS operators and four helicopters were involved. All seven stowaways secured and the oil tanker is now on the move. #NaveAndromeda

HMS Collingwood is in an appalling state. I reported in June that Vivian wing had been closed amid safety fears. Now pictures, that sources tell me are from today, show the naval base looking like a tip. Sailors crammed in tiny rooms, areas sealed off. It’s bloody disgraceful.

Veterans are in high spirits today. As they were forming up in Old Portsmouth for photos, one RFA officer charged with getting them all lined up, called the hundreds of veterans “a gaggle”. “We’re heroes,” one replied with a wry smile, followed by giggles from his comrades.
