I’d like to start with Trouble Quartet, the series Togashi was developing in the summer of 1990, prior to Yu Yu Hakusho, which came into existence later that year. He has always had a really blatant interest in ideas relating to challenging gender norms and sexuality.

It’s worth noting that Jump editorial has had a history of stopping lgbt characters from being completely endorsed by the series they’re present in. Be it through encouraging characters like this to be antagonists, or not allowing much explicit language.

Killua at one point tries to bury Nanika, Alluka’s alternate persona that is the reason for Alluka’s dehumanization by her family. He meant well, but Alluka spelled out to him in the clearest words possible that she won’t accept his love unless it includes Nanika too.

She is routinely referred to as male by most of her family, however this is presented alongside her general mistreatment and dehumanization. Her being referred to as the wrong gender correlates to the character doing so not viewing her as fully human.

On the topic of Sensui in this thread, I might as well bring up how he has DID, and one of his personalities is a woman named Naru. Itsuki states that 3 of Sensui’s personalities exist to fulfill less combat-based (presumably emotional) purposes. Itsuki is also fond of her.

It’s not good, I’d struggle to even call it well-intentioned, but it’s more based in ignorance than it is hate, and we get to see Togashi change his views on this subject through future characters. Not as bad as it could be for a young shonen writer in the early 90s.

Killua wants Alluka to be safe. Killua loves Alluka and Nanika. Their family is trying to kill Alluka because Nanika exists in her. Killua is afraid of this. Killua wants to make Alluka safe. So he tries to stop Nanika from coming out anymore. But Nanika is important to Alluka.

One last note on Miyuki: In her next appearance after her fight with Yusuke, she has a bandage over where he hit her, and appears to still present herself as a woman. Implying she, after hearing Yusuke’s advice and admitting he was correct, still resolved to be a woman.

As a young child, Alluka is shown to be wearing pretty basic-looking male attire, with hair that’s longer than average for a boy. We can also see her playing house with dolls in one panel.

There is something to say about the fact that he exists as nothing more than that, though. He’s not a gag character, Togashi had him exist as just another one of the guys.
