My colleague in Rafah said today that she woke her 6-month-old baby up in the middle of the night to play. With the heavy bombardment, she thought it would be their last night alive: "If this would be my last night at least I got the chance to hug my daughter for the last time."
Today is my first day as CEO of
@mercycorps
. I am excited and humbled to join this global team of fearless humanitarians and to lead this great organization.
“From a boss standpoint, if you see your people as numbers, you will fail. You can’t treat them as numbers, but folks who need a human connection to fire on all cylinders.” Wise words from Prince Harry!
#MastersOfScaleSummit
“It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action – together.” Thank you to the Duke & Duchess of Sussex for including
@mercycorps
on the
#Archewell
list of orgs responding to the devastating
#Haiti
earthquake
We’re excited to introduce our new CEO, Tjada D'Oyen McKenna! Coming to us from
@CARE
, Tjada brings extensive experience driving bold solutions to tough challenges across the international aid sector and across the globe. We can’t wait for her to lead our team.
I am very excited to share the news that I will be moving to
@CARE
next month to join them in the quest to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice.
Shocked and disturbed by today’s UN report on food security in Gaza. It’s beyond unacceptable that we have reached yet another tipping point in Gaza - this time, death by starvation, to add to the thousands killed by airstrikes. Enough is enough.
The crisis in Sudan is becoming a forgotten war. Displacement, disease spread & sexual violence are among the horrors inflicted on civilians. Reports of grave human rights violations across Sudan are horrific, particularly the escalating inter-ethnic violence in Darfur.
95% of people in Afghanistan are not getting enough to eat. It's almost impossible to fathom. Many people are running out of time and millions of lives are at stake. As support pours in for Ukraine we cannot forget Afghans.
We are seeing a lot of excess donated items on the Ukrainian border. Donated items require a lot of time/space to sort through. Cash is often the best thing to give people in crisis. It gives people the freedom of choosing what they need most while supporting the local economy.
Some personal news, my family and I are officially moving from Atlanta to Washington, DC this week. It is bittersweet but I’m eager to connect with DC friends and new colleagues.
Open to any and all recommendations - especially your favorite kid-friendly spots!
The words used to talk about refugees from the Middle East or Africa vs. Ukraine matter. Someone’s race or economic status should not dictate their ability to seek refuge, access services or garner empathy. Every refugee deserves respect.
Flooding in Pakistan and the prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa are examples of how countries that contribute the least to global warming are often the ones that suffer the most.
The effects of climate change are not felt equally.
How I feel about being in Nairobi this week to kick off
@mercycorps
' Global Leadership Gathering! I am thrilled to bring together 150+ leaders from across the organization and come together as one global team.
#GLG2023
I can't emphasize this enough - the crisis unfolding in Somalia is dire. Famine is on the horizon.
@WFP
now estimates that 213,000 people are currently facing starvation. That's a 160% increase from April. The coming weeks and months will be critical.
.
@mercycorps
is watching events in Washington, D.C., and we are deeply concerned by the confrontation at the Capitol. We condemn all acts of violence. Now, more than ever, Americans need to come together and keep working to build a brighter, stronger tomorrow for all people.
Early but great start to the day with
@NPRinskeep
on Morning Edition talking about the ramifications of yesterday's breakdown of the Black Sea Grain deal for the global food crisis.
Long overdue and well-deserved. WFP also has a history of strong women leaders and I am honored to call them my friends and sheroes. Here’s to you
@C_A_Bertini
,
@Ertharin1
, and
@JosetteSheeran
!
It was an honor to deliver the commencement address at
@willamette_u
today and receive an honorary degree in public service. Congratulations to all the 2022 graduates!
It is supposed to be below freezing tonight in Dana, Syria - an area that was devastated by the earthquake.
@mercycorps
is working diligently with our partners to help set up shelters for families whose houses were destroyed.
I'm delighted to congratulate Ambassador
@SamanthaJPower
on her appointment as the new head of
@USAID
. We
@MercyCorps
look forward to partnering with Ambassador Power to take on the global challenges of our time.
During the temporary truce, our team members in southern Gaza were able to get together @ our office to share a meal. Every day I fear for their safety & it brings me great comfort knowing they were together. One of them shared, “it brings back the hope I lost before.”
Hard to believe it's been 1 year since I joined
@mercycorps
. I have been inspired by our team’s tenacity - against the odds and in the face of the COVID pandemic - to keep moving forward, to reach 50 million people & counting. Cont.
Humanitarian orgs need assurances from the US Government that we can operate safely & legally & fund operations for aid in Afghanistan. Thank you
@SenJeffMerkley
@RepSaraJacobs
& 32 others for leading Congressional efforts to secure these assurances.
I’m attending today’s Global Food Security Summit at
@UNGA
where leaders must ensure lifesaving support for 345M people marching toward starvation does not come at the expense of investments to fix broken food systems & address underlying causes of hunger.
Tonight's
#UNGA
vote demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, protection of civilians, and immediate release of hostages is a step in the right direction. Enough is enough—the fighting must stop.
As a young Black girl, attending an institution like Harvard opened doors I didn't know existed. Growing up, I was taught that - even with affirmative action - as a Black student I had to be perfect in order to get a shot at opportunities that my white peers had.
The world is on the verge of a catastrophic food crisis. To help, the US should:
1. Increase humanitarian and food security funding
2. Prioritize the use of flexible cash/voucher programs
2. Double investments in Feed the Future countries
3. Invest in conflict prevention
I am so proud of the
@mercycorps
team in Haiti. They worked in overdrive this weekend to distribute kits with diapers + other items in L’Asile - reaching 7,250 people & counting.
The need in Haiti is still dire. Our team is committed to providing support now & in the long run.
Someone recently asked how I talk to my boys about the state of the world. I try to be honest, remain hopeful, and remind them that we all have a role in making the world a better, safer place for everyone.
How do you talk with your kids about what's unfolding around the globe?
I applaud the
@UN
Security Council for approving a resolution today that better enables orgs like
@mercycorps
to deliver lifesaving aid in countries where sanctions are in effect. This is a game changer as we face record-breaking humanitarian needs.
Congratulations to Mercy Corps Global Leadership Council member Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
@NOIweala
on making history as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO. Her determination to prioritize vaccine equity is the leadership we need right now.
Just got back from a remarkable trip to Iraq and Lebanon. I feel re-energized after meeting so many incredible
@mercycorps
team members and partners. I am immensely proud of all the work my colleagues are doing to support communities across the region.
Some 10,000 people have gone to Kabul City fleeing the fighting. They are only a fraction of the more than 3.5 million displaced around the country.
@mercycorps
will stay and help Afghans as much as we safely can.
There is a stark difference in how the world responded to the war in Ukraine vs. other humanitarian crises. Frankly, seeing firsthand how race, ethnicity or religion dictate funding/how long people pay attention to a crisis is one of the most frustrating aspects of this work.
It was great to meet with
@SenJeffMerkley
today. We had the chance to talk about
@mercycorps
’ work in Ukraine and the effects of the conflict on global food and fuel prices. As always, I am thankful for his ongoing support of international humanitarian and development work.
My parents grew up during the civil rights movement.
My ancestors came to the US as slaves.
My family made sacrifices so I could have the life I have now.
We have to acknowledge the history of Black Americans to understand the injustices we face today
#BlackHistoryMonth
#COVID19
is worsening hunger, poverty, conflict & gender inequality — all of which may be equally or even more deadly than the virus. Never before have we faced a humanitarian crisis of this magnitude. We need an equitable vaccine rollout & global response to recovery.
This week I am traveling (virtually) to Jordan to meet with the
@mercycorps
team. Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Sally who showed me a 1,000 year-old (!) olive tree. Our team is focusing on strengthening the horticulture sector to increase income opportunities for farmers
Had a great time moderating a conversation with
@GerryConnolly
and
@FP4America
tonight at
@busboysandpoets
about the war in Ukraine. We spoke about the implications of the war for communities around the globe - from the Horn of Africa to Yemen.
Meet our new CEO,
@Tjada
! Please join us tomorrow, November 11 for a Facebook Live, in which Tjada will share more of the personal and professional journey that brought her to Mercy Corps.

Yesterday, I traveled to Nineveh to meet with a group of women enrolled in a
@mercycorps
savings program. We spoke candidly about the challenges we face as women/mothers. It was so inspiring to hear how many of them are starting their own businesses after enrolling in the program
The hype over
#BlackFriday
&
#CyberMonday
leaves many small businesses behind. This holiday season I am trying my best to shop small. Supporting small businesses not only benefits the local economy but is more sustainable.
Please reply and share your favorite small business!
I could not think of a better way to celebrate
#InternationalWomensDay
than in Nairobi w/dozens of our
@mercycorps
female leaders. We were joined for a special breakfast by the incredible
@sisterhood_lam
to recharge our batteries & celebrate sisterhood & the power of women.
Every person fleeing Ukraine in search of safety - no matter their race or nationality - should be welcomed. It is disheartening to read reports of
#AfricansinUkraine
being stopped from entering nearby countries. There is never a justification for racism.
As
@mercycorps
navigates a number of humanitarian crises around the globe right now, I want to give a big shout-out to my team. I am constantly in awe of their ability to quickly respond to complex crises and provide meaningful support to families and communities.
The war in Ukraine is impacting millions far outside Ukraine's borders, with spiking prices & shortages of fuel & food from Lebanon to Somalia. There are steps we can take to mitigate the worsening global hunger crisis. My latest in
@TheHillOpinion
This is a monumental moment. Huge congratulations to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on her confirmation to the Supreme Court. She continues to show Black women and girls across the country that we belong in every room - even if you are the first.
Congratulations
@SamanthaJPower
on your confirmation to head
@USAID
.
@mercycorps
looks forward to working with you to address the devastating global ripple effects of the pandemic & tackle the root causes of conflict, inequality & unjust governance.
We celebrated the launch of
@mercycorps
’ new strategy with the Washington, DC team today! It was great to connect with colleagues and hear their excitement for the future of Mercy Corps.
Providing aid in NW Syria even before the earthquake was challenging. Now, it's even more complex. The supplies we have in the region - like shelter supplies - will run out fast. We must put politics aside and do everything we can to support communities that have lost everything.
My heart is heavy and is with everyone affected by the situation in Ukraine.
To assess the evolving civilian needs and gaps in response efforts,
@mercycorps
is mobilizing a team to the region. This assessment will help us inform a potential humanitarian response.
I’m in Somalia this week seeing the severe impact of drought that has forced 1 million Somalis to flee their homes. I’ve met parents who have lost children. Families who have walked for days for help. Hunger is cruel and we must do more to help.
Grateful that justice was served today for George Floyd & his family. We have not made enough progress in the year since his death. I and
@mercycorps
will continue fighting injustice and racism, and working to build communities of belonging and inclusion.
This week I had the opportunity to see the
@mercycorps
office in DC for the first time! While we aren’t back in the office yet, it was fun to see the space and meet some of my colleagues in person. Thanks
@DinaEsposito10
and the rest of the team for showing me around.
We are committed to playing our part in helping to reduce emissions, in addition to our core work of helping communities around the world adapt urgently to the changing climate, and expanding access to climate-smart, sustainable energy.
The
@mercycorps
team in Nepal hosted
@USAmbNepal
on his first community visit to see our BHAKARI program, funded by
@USAID
. Our team is working alongside rural and marginalized communities to tackle food insecurity & chronic malnutrition and respond to short-term emergencies.
I’ve met so many incredible women in Somalia this week. Their strength, perseverance & determination to help their families survive through this drought crisis are unparalleled.
On this
#WorldHumanitarianDay
, I honor and thank my colleagues for their selfless efforts to make the world safer for us all. You truly exemplify the best of us. Thank you.
It was so special to meet with Emily, Amelia and Julianna today, all
@mercycorps
interns in our DC office. We had the opportunity to talk about starting a career in the international development sector and how to take up space as a woman in a professional setting.
I am leaving Colombia today feeling energized and inspired by the wonderful conversations I had this week with
@mercycorps
colleagues and local partners.
Thank you
@hughaprile
and the entire
@MercyCorpsCo
team for hosting!
I am thrilled to announce
@Pincollacott

Great to be back on the
@mastersofscale

@mercycorps
humanitarian efforts in war-torn Ukraine and earthquake-stricken Syria & how businesses leaders can step up as these crises collide.
This

Our
@mercycorps
internship program is expanding to partner with Hispanic-Serving Institutions to connect Hispanic & Latinx students w/paid internships. In order to create a more diverse talent pipeline, we have to start in the places where we recruit.
In NW Syria, at least 11,000 families are now homeless and 280,000 are in need of immediate assistance.
@mercycorps
is providing clean water, shelter supplies and hygiene kits to affected communities but we cannot do this work alone. This crisis demands more international support
A horrific statistic. A life, a story, a family, and a future extinguished for each one of these 43,000 lives - mostly kids - lost to drought in Somalia. We are now on the verge of a sixth drought season, with little rain forecast through June.
There's now an official estimate:
43,000 people (mostly kids under 5) have died from the drought in Somalia.
We've known this to be a major emergency for several months. Here's my episode from October w/
@Tjada

NGOs are on the front lines of every humanitarian response effort. On my first full day at
@USUN
, I wanted to hear directly from some of our largest partners.
In Cartagena to meet and learn from
@mercycorps
team members from the Americas. I feel rejuvenated after meeting so many remarkable colleagues who provide critical support to communities navigating extreme weather events, COVID, conflict and climate change.
I always look forward to meeting with
@mercycorps
' partner organizations. Today I met
@WillCastanedaC
from
@Caribeafirmativ
to learn about their efforts to ensure members of Venezuela’s LGBTQA+ community in Colombia live a fulfilling life.
Excited to be in Iraq this week. I have already met so many incredible
@mercycorps
colleagues and young people who are tirelessly working to support communities across the country.
2. Despite dark chapters in the org’s history & past failures, I believe we are building a culture of integrity & accountability. We own our past & move forward together, stronger.
I am particularly concerned for elderly people and people with disabilities in Ukraine right now.
Older, vulnerable people are more likely to remain in their home villages, towns & cities even with conflict ongoing. We saw this happen in 2014 and it will happen again.
The US &
@POTUS
must prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan by maximizing diplomacy & prioritizing support for front-line organizations that are meeting the growing needs of Afghan civilians. My op-ed in
@foreignpolicy
:
My heart breaks for the families who have lost loved ones during the earthquake. Some of my colleagues in Syria have lost their own family members, including children. We won’t know the true devastation for some time as search and rescue efforts continue in the coming days.
Almost 100 days into the conflict, Gazans are sick, starving, and displaced. Time is running out for the thousands at risk of famine. We need a ceasefire, end to the siege, and massive scale-up of humanitarian assistance to avert further deaths now.
Thrilled that the first
#COVAX
vaccines arrived today in Ghana. We are one step closer to ending the pandemic, but millions of people are standing at the back of the line. We will only be safe when the whole world can be protected.
#OneWorldProtected
I joined
@WomMovMillions
today with
@YasmineSherif1
,
@nocturnelle
and
@hiltonfound
to discuss how philanthropists can better support women affected by crisis. It was inspiring to meet so many intelligent and generous women dedicated to making a tangible impact around the globe.
Millions of children have been forced to flee their homes in Ukraine to find safety. In western Ukraine,
@mercycorps

Had a wonderful time celebrating the New Year with
@mercycorps
team members yesterday!
It was so special to finally meet
@Pincollacott
in person and welcome her to Washington, DC.
We have lost touch with all of our nearly 70 staff in Gaza. We fear for our team & for the two million civilians trapped in Gaza w/nowhere safe to go & completely cut off from the outside world.
My colleague recently sent me this from Benue State, Nigeria. Nigerians are experiencing catastrophic floods that have killed 600 people and displaced 1.3 million.
@mercycorps
' team is distributing emergency shelter kits, food, and water to affected communities.
