After Chandrayaan 3 it's now time for 🇯🇵Japan's lunar lander which will be launching tomorrow (28 August) at 5:56am (IST).
The lander named SLIM(Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) will demonstrate high precision pinpoint landing for future missions like 🇮🇳🇯🇵LUPEX.

's first orbital launch vehicle, the SLV-3.
4 stage all solid propellant rocket with a payload capacity of 40kg to LEO, it had it's first successful flight on 18 July 1980 making India the 7th country in the world to have orbital launch capability.

Primary landing site is north of Bogoslavsky crater(69°32'S, 43°32'E) which is around ~120km from the Chandrayaan 3 landing site.
ISRO successfully static test fired the CE20 E13 engine for Gaganyaan qualification and 220kN thrust qualification on 22 September 2023.
CE20 engine operated at ~220kN thrust level for a duration of 670 seconds. The test met all the parameters.

Our 5G deployment was super quick even though it started few years later than other countries.
By speed we were in the bottom 20 out ~150 countries before 5G due to the congested 4G network(10-15mbps). Now in top 20, in like less than 2 years(106mbps).
Chandrayaan 3 Vikram lander performs the 2nd ever propulsive hop on the moon.
The first hop was by Surveyor 6 in 1967. The vehicle lifted 4m from the lunar surface and moved west 2.5 m.

Chandrayaan-3 Mission:
🇮🇳Vikram soft-landed on 🌖, again!
Vikram Lander exceeded its mission objectives. It successfully underwent a hop experiment.
On command, it fired the engines, elevated itself by about 40 cm as expected and landed safely at a distance of 30 – 40 cm away.
First pics of the complete Chandrayaan-3 lander👀
Electro - Magnetic Interference/ Electro - Magnetic Compatibility have been completed successfully.

It still amazes me that the 🇮🇳Chandrayaan 3 rover is only the 5th successful uncrewed lunar rover.
Other 4:
Lunokhod 1&2 from USSR
Yutu 1&2 from China
There have been more uncrewed rovers on Mars with a total of 6 successful Martian rovers.

ISRO's Chandrayaan-3 and Roscosmos' Luna-25 will be launching within 1 day of each other and both will be landing within 120km of each other near the south pole.
Let's not forget CY and Luna were once combined missions.

Disturbing signs on Luna-25 were noticed before the attempted maneuver to the pre-landing orbit, but the decision to postpone the maneuver was not made.
It was necessary to wait and postpone the maneuver. There was time to postpone.

If both Chandrayaan 3 and Luna 25 land successfully they will have the closest temporal(time) proximity ever between two landers on any extraterrestrial surface.
Hopefully I didn't miss accounting any past lander😅

We have an aborted launch of the Gaganyaan TV-D1 in-flight abort test.
An anomaly seems to have been observed by the flight computer, cutting the engine off.
Next launch attempt will be after the examination and correction of the anomaly.

One more thing, without the rover inside the lander the center of gravity of the lander would be different than it was during landing.
The updated algo/software for the hop would have probably taken into account this difference.

Luna 25 has been shipped to Vostochny Cosmodrome. Chandrayaan 3 and Luna 25 would not only be landing very close to each other but it now seems their landing times would be also within few hours of each other.

After today's RLV landing experiment, the next experimental test of the RLV will be the ORE (Orbital Re-entry Experiment). According to the last update this will be launched onboard a GSLV Mk2 with a smaller third stage in place of the regular cryogenic stage (CUS).

The trials as part of the preparation for Crew Module recovery operations for the Gaganyaan mission have commenced.
On Feb 7, 2023, initial trials in a closed pool were conducted in the Water Survival Test Facility (WSTF) of

On the Venus Orbiter Mission, Dr. Somanath said:
- It will include an atmospheric probe
- It is not a balloon probe(which implies it may be a descent probe)
- It 'may' reach the surface in a functional state

Damn, Odysseus tipped over to it's side upon landing.
That makes 3 lunar landers in history which landed in the wrong orientation but still kept functioning:
1. Luna 23 (1974)
2. SLIM (2024)
3. Odysseus (2024)
(Luna 23 render from )
ISRO is planning for lunar sample return with Chandrayaan 4 after LUPEX in the next 5-7 years.
Mission profile seems to be 2 launches with probably the Transfer Module and Re-entry module and another launch for Lander Module and Ascent Module.
